Numan & M.E. offers a fascinating insight into a phenomenon that had a profound effect on many young people's lives in the early eighties. There have been a number of books written about Gary Numan but this is a unique perspective; a personal account that is a warm, touching and often hilarious tribute by someone who was proud to be a fan.

There’s nothing fawning or geeky about the book, (on the contrary) it shares a very human, self effacing story of a young lad growing up in a concrete new town in Thatcherite Britain. There are accounts of Raleigh Choppers and school yard struggles with classmates who would ridicule anyone they deemed an outsider. Then there are the unlikely alliances with outcasts from other music clans such as skinheads and punks.

Much of the book will be immediately familiar to anyone who was a contemporary fan themselves. There are vivid accounts of Numan’s influential live performances which put you right there beside the writer. There are memories of fan-organised events such as the Disco’s, Conventions and at least one account of stalking the star at his home.

What I enjoyed most about this book is whether you’ve met the author or not, you have a strong sense that he is someone you know, someone you grew up with and had similar shared experiences and in my case, someone who I’m proud to call a friend.

...I also happen to like obscure eighties indie music.

I enjoyed this CD and have a very different opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good news for us Brits, 6 Jun. 2014

Just a note in-case you weren't aware that this Blu-ray is region free.

Shame the Beeb couldn't have offered the UK (its primary market place) an HD version of this HD production from the outset but who knows what goes on in the boardroom of BBC Enterprises.

The DVD content is nice to have but I'm sure most of the people from over this side of the pond that would already have the Unearthly Child.

Anyhow, it looks and sounds great. It makes the HD copy I had on my Sky box look a bit over-compressed and soft by comparison. Then again, (compared to blu-ray) broadcast HD TV is second-rate it has to be said!

Off to the charity shop with my 2Entertain DVD copy then... still in its shrink-wrap of course ;o)

Network have done it again. This is just fantastic and follows their Sweeney and Space 1999 blu-ray restorations admirably. I just hope that they venture beyond "first seasons" (as they have done in each case so far) and give us more of this quality to re-live our favourite TV classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blu-ray notes, 12 April 2014

Just adding a note to say that this Olive Films blu-ray is region free. The image looks pin sharp, (I was able to read the print on an actors ID badge with ease). The film has been sympathetically mastered. Natural grain is present and minor speckles have been left alone which IMO is the best way to treat classic films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got the sound just right, 29 Feb. 2012
This review is from: This Is Niecy (Audio CD)
An essential soul classic sympathetically restored to sound like it always did without the clicks and scrapes of well worn vinyl. There's no ham fisted over-loud/over-bright remastering here. They did a great job with this one so if you need This Is Niecy" on CD, then this is the edition to go for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed..., 1 Nov. 2010

Having previously bought this series as the Region 1 Megaset, I was looking forward to seeing what they could do with a hi-res restored print on blu ray.

I've just watched the first disc of this and want to say that I'm very impressed indeed. It looks like they've been able to go back to the original film stock for the restoration. Up to now, we've only been able to view the series from the original telecine transfers, (done at 1970's TV resolution). Thankfully they didn't try to make this wide-screen. The episodes retain the original 4:3 aspect.

This new HD transfer has exceeded my expectations. Genuinely, this show has never looked this good. The picture quality is almost contemporary and shows how good the miniature shots were back in the day. Some of the effects look a bit dated but the model shots clearly show, (in much the same way as in classics like 2001) that CGI still has some way to go.

I suspect a lot of hard work went into this and it shows.
