Mere 250 pages, plus notes, - clearly not enough to cover one of the bloodiest wars in history.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, poor performance, 23 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love LP. Having been (so far) in 94 countries, most of the time I referred to one of their books. So, when I spotted this book I thought: "What a good idea". To make your mouth water - and all just within one volume...

Well, having read it, I think they blew it.
First of all, take their selection of "countries". Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, Wales, Scotland, etc. are listed as "countries". Western Sahara is not... There are sections about Pithcairn Falkland Islands, but nothing about South Georgia, St.Helena or Faroes...

The book suggests that hotel prices in Norway are lower during the high season.

The recommended film about Greece is ... Mamma Mia.

But the worst thing is almost total absence of any practical information. How to make it happen? How to get there? Visas? Vaccinations? Border crossings? Costs? Safety? Nothing. Instead it's very limited and valuable space is being wasted on something totally useless. How on Earth a correlation between Catholics and Protestants in Brazil is going to be of any use for potential traveller?

2.0 out of 5 stars French version - no English sound and subtitles, 31 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Obviously, a classic, BUT only in French, with no English sound or subtitles (this fact is omitted from the Amazon's description) AND it is hardly a 4K, with quite a grainy picture in many episodes. Hard to think of any logical explanation for this release outside the Francophone countries.

1.0 out of 5 stars Russians are coming !, 9 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Second World War (Hardcover)
Regretfully yet another opus which is enthusiastically re-telling Dr Goebbels' stories portraying Russian soldiers as a horde of savage rapists and murderers. It reproduces the Nazis' claim about 2,000,000 German women and girls "thought" to be raped by them. Given that in total there were 2,500,000 Russians fighting in Germany in the spring of 1945 (and 350,000 of them lost their lives fighting for Berlin) that would mean that practically EVERY Russian soldier would have raped a German woman at some point...

Apart from a number of shameless lies the author allows himself some pure fantasies. For example, he claims, without providing any reference whatsoever, that "Stalin would never have allowed Americans to take Berlin first. As soon as Red Army aviation pilots had spotted their advance, Stalin would almost certainly have ordered Soviet aircraft to attack them." (page 731)

3.0 out of 5 stars Does anybody know how to turn off the music?, 5 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Marnie [DVD] (DVD)
Of course an action music was an absolute "must" at the time. Yet... by George - does anybody know how to turn this excessively loud and intrusive stuff off. The movie would only only benefit from that.

3.0 out of 5 stars 30 out of 10,000, 10 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Africa [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
There are more than 10,000 animal species in Africa... Half of them in Congo.... first and third episodes were brilliant... while second and forth are full of missed opportunities...

And yet... how about that dying baby elephant? I couldn't help thinking: is there something sick about that sort of sadistic tv voyeurism? The person who filmed that provided us with a lengthy apologetic explanation why they could not help that poor creature - well, perhaps that was the case... the question is, however, why did they make us to watch that? Because that what the public wants?

2.0 out of 5 stars Why can't they speak normally?, 6 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well, both films are unquestionable Civil War classics, with very fine cinematography, directing and acting... and yet I could not help asking myself "why can't the film's characters speak like normal people? - why do they deliver only patriotic speeches - even when speaking to each other at home?"

1.0 out of 5 stars Connolly is riding a tricycle and using a f-word... a lot, 6 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have bought this in hope to get some ideas for my forthcoming trip to New Zealand... well, silly me. Instead, you get a long stand-up "comedy" show that mostly consists of below the belt jokes with generous use of a f-word. In the intervals, Connolly is riding his tricycle around clearly enjoying himself and flirting with fans. Average video quality (but who cares) and no subtitles (no wonder, given the language used).

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 12 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First of all, if you are hoping for some help with choosing a hotel in Krakow, look somewhere else. This book does not contain even a single hotel review. Instead, it refers the reader to LP's own hotel booking on-line service (a little money-making devise)... so what is the point to buy this book - or rather, given its modest size, brochure?

Secondly, the brochure contain numerous mistakes and omissions: the fact that the Czartoryski museum is closed is not mentioned, the State Rooms and Private Apartments in the Wawel castle are not open on Mondays, Colleguim Maius is not free on Tuesdays, as the author suggests - there many more such examples...

Thirdly, some people may find the authors "playful" language deeply offensive against certain nationalities.

LP at its very low.
