This is just fantastic- Mr Rutherford is a great communicator who delivers big (and subtle) ideas in such a way you are both informed and enormously entertained. Do read it. It's illuminating and hilarious.

1.0 out of 5 stars which took a great deal of patience, 8 April 2017

Produced a tiny amount of steam the first once or twice time I used it, which took a great deal of patience. Failed to get even slightly warm after that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great book, truly horrible presentation, 25 Nov. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very useful book but the tiny, and *non-adjustable* font makes it a torment to read. I think it's replicated from a point 4 font and is eye-wateringly titchy You can of course pan and enlarge which makes it legible, but a tortuous read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have loved all the Laundry excursions, 14 July 2016

Have loved all the Laundry excursions, and was delighted to find the Laundry 2.0 delivering even more terror, mayhem and humour. New cast interspersed with the old guard and new devilry. This may be the best of a really good bunch.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic beginning to a great series, 21 Dec. 2015

This is a fantastic beginning to a great series. You can read stand-alone but since everyone in it is so well-drawn you won't want to miss out. The history is accurate enough to enthral a pedant and funny-disgusting enough to attract everyone else, all presented in a solid plot with a proper ending. Five stars cos I can't give it any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can judge a book by its title, 8 May 2015

Nice plotting and an engaging, earnest protagonist. The writing is often vivid and you really root for the outcast, adrift in a believable post-war New York. Recommended by John Scalzi, who knows a thing or two.

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't have to be hard up to love this, 6 Mar. 2015
You don't have to be hard up to love this. Reignited my dormant love of cooking , and the recipes make it easy for you to either just follow them, or adapt them to suit you. Healthy, generally quick and really tasty.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was a good read, certainly, 5 Nov. 2014

Not your average haunted house mystery, with fully-realised characters that believably have their own lives on and off the page. And it's hard to put down. It was a good read, certainly. However, if you think of yourself as openly atheist/sceptic/feminist (I'm all three) you might find it hard going in places since none of these can ever be a Good Thing, or honestly arrived at. I don't know what Richard Dawkins has done to personally annoy Mr Rickman apart from be gobby about atheism but you can feel the antagonism that has been kept to occasional sharp asides in previous books building to cage-fight levels here. Also Brian Cox name checked as sub-Antichrist, presumably for subsequent books cos RD is getting on a bit now. Hang on your sense of humour and there's a lot to enjoy here.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very retro Boy's Own type series. Two stars for making Captain a girl, and giving female characters equal play BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER because none of them has any depth. There's not enough complexity to carry the series (for me, anyway. There are about a dozen of these so someone must be keen.) The simplistic politics are over-explained and laughable. I read two (free) in case there was any development, but no. Honor flatlines. If you miss the Eagle comic definitely give these a go.
