5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Hilarious, 9 April 2012

The film is about a group of incredibly inept suicide bombers and their struggle to become martyrs. An interesting premise for a comedy but Four Lions makes it work fantastically. The film attracted lots of controversy and given the subject matter that is not surprising. It treads a fine line but one of the reasons it works is because it takes such a serious and controversial subject and has a bit of fun with it in a world where everyone is stereo-typically inept. It doesn't try to make a political statement (other than perhaps about free speech and that nothing should be off limits in the realm of comedy), it doesn't mock the victims or the jihadis, it even makes you care about the characters and it most importantly never forgets that it is a comedy pure and simple. To summerise this is one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic action and good message., 9 April 2012

Overall this a great post-apocalyptic film. The action is great and fast paced and the plot doesn't suffer at all because of this. It also has a very good and deep message about the power of religion to good but also to be twisted for sinister ends (those motives being represented by Washington and Oldman respectively) that makes you think. It is a very entertaining film and the characters are complex, well portrayed and interesting. Definitely worth watching.

The book has a very interesting premise which is that the US government and military gets overthrown by Islamic Extremists. The book follows the remnants of the US government located in a secret underground facility as they try to orchestrate a fight back and liberate their country. It is a good interesting read however the plot, though interesting, seems a little rushed and some of the characters underdeveloped. Overall though it is worth reading and worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good entertaining read, 9 April 2012

Beck does have quite a reputation for his political views but it is important not to be prejudiced against the book because of them. When I bought the book I hadn't read anything he's said or written before but did have a rough idea of his political views. The book is a good fast paced political thriller with an interesting plot and is not overly littered with his political views. It is overall a very good and entertaining read and is even more interesting for those with an interest in US politics. I have given it four stars instead of five simply because though it is good it is not up there with the very best thrillers. It is definitely worth the money and worth reading.

The Sword and the Star: Temple Mount

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read, 19 Jan. 2012

Overall I enjoyed the book. It kept at a fast pace and the plot was interesting. The central premise is on a surprise attack being launched against Israel by an Islamic Fundamentalist Alliance backed by the EU, which has now become one country in which a charismatic demagogue has risen to power. Which is a scarily plausible future scenario when one thinks about it and the reactions of different nations to the events is very believable. The book is written in a unique style that lets you see the war from different perspectives ranging from that of the soldier on the ground to that of the generals and Presidents of the US and EU. While this is good and interesting the sheer amount of different characters the book constantly flits through means the characters seem a bit underdeveloped and you never really get attached enough to one to care about their fate or to hate the books antagonist(s) which is a shame because the characters are really quite interesting.
However overall the book is an enjoyable read and a good fast paced political thriller that portrays an interesting and plausible future scenario. Definitely worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Unadulterated Fun, 17 Jan. 2012
GTA comparisons are very frequent and a lot of people dismiss this game as a GTA copycat. It isn't. It is much better than GTA (never thought I'd say that).
Saints Row is simply fun, it has a wacky sense of humour, it doesn't take itself too seriously, the story is completely ridiculous and the missions are very over the top but incredibly fun. Who cares why or how its possible that your flying a tank its just fun that you are. Just when you think it can't get any more ridiculous and any better they bring in zombies. The missions are very varied and unforgettable and there is plenty of interesting activities to keep you occupied after the main story is finished. Plus there is loads of customisation available.
The controls are smooth, it can feel a bit on the easy side even on hardcore difficulty (esspecially after you've upgraded uor characters abilities and weapons later in the game). The 'homie' AI can be a bit annoying at times, particularly if you want to make a speedy get a way and it takes them ages to get in the car, but can hold their own in a fight. The graphics aren't the best around but they're good enough, and their slightly cartoonish feel compliment the games general absurdity.
It your looking for realism or an intricate plot then this probably isn't the game for you. If on the other hand you're simply looking for a game that is loads of fun then nothing does it better than Saints Row. And after all isn't that what the point of playing video games is.

Despite occasional slow downs in the pace of the story it is a gripping read with a good (and frighteningly plausible) plot with some good twists that has an interesting take on the decline of post-war Britain. But the highlight is the style of writing which makes the story so plausible that it leaves you wondering at the end whether you've just been reading a work of fiction or someone's memoirs. Definitely worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good not great., 23 Oct. 2011

The most important criteria for any game is how fun it is to play and in this regard Resistance succeeds. The game looks great and it does a brilliant job of creating atmosphere, throughout the game you genuinely feel the underdog as opposed to superman. The weapons are fun to use and the enemy AI is good and challenging.
However the story mode felt a bit short and the boss battles didn't feel nearly as epic as the ones in Resistance 2. Also it didn't develop the plot as much as I hoped and many questions from the previous titles that you expect to be answered aren't and a few new ones are raised. The multiplayer while enjoyable doesn't seem to have improved much from the last game either.
Overall I enjoyed the game and would recommend buying it for fans of the series for others I would recommend waiting till the price drops or renting it first to get a feel for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic McNab thriller, 23 Oct. 2011

If you like the other books in this series I recommend getting it. McNab is very good at writing fast paced thrillers that keep the reader interested and does a better job of guiding you through the present geopolitical context of the country it is set in than most journalists. If you've read any of McNab's other books you won't be disappointed by this newest installment, if you haven't then I strongly suggest you do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the media or the politicians!, 24 Mar. 2011

It does what it says on the cover. This book is in no way Islamophobic or racist, even though the Left will no doubt present it as such to avoid having to come face to face with it's contents. It is an unbiased guide as to what the Koran and Hadifs actually says. It also gives the full historical background and context as well as commentary on the Koran by some of the most respect and influential Islamic scolars and clerics. It is a must read for any non Muslim who is interested in what the Koran says and the implications for Western civilisation. I'd go as far as to say that no one can really consider themselves informed on the subject without having read this book.
