Gaein's Taste
Gaein's Taste
Price: £9.20

5.0 out of 5 stars Tracklist and Summary, 21 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Gaein's Taste (Audio CD)
The surprise hit of 2010, Personal Taste (aka Personal Preference) garnered high ratings and a huge fanbase in a comedy that proves true love is found in the most unlikely places. Quirky and insecure Gaein lives alone in her father's famous 'Old World'--an architectural tribute to old Korea and Gaein's late mother. Money troubles loom and Gaein is desperate for a roommate. To get inside this rare building, architect Jinho (Lee Minho from Boys Over Flowers) allows Gaein to believe he's gay. Their friendship deepens and grows to love in this tender romantic comedy. Like the program itself, the soundtrack is filled with joy, tenderness and a genuine sense of fun. The tracklist:

1 - Hard to Believe (Younha)
2 - Falling Rain (Kim Tae Woo)
3 - Hearts Touching (SeeYa)
4 - Wings (Kim Tae Woo)
5 - Making Love (4Minute)
6 - Like a Fool (2AM)
7 - King of the Bees
8 - Strange Feeling
9 - King of the Bees (piano)
10 - Like a Fool (inst)
11 - Making Love (guitar)
12 - Wings (inst)
13 - Hearts Touching (inst)
14 - Falling Rain (violin)

He Was Some Kind of Man: Masculinities in the B Western (Film and Media Studies)
He Was Some Kind of Man: Masculinities in the B Western (Film and Media Studies)
by Roderick McGillis
Edition: Paperback
Price: £27.50

5.0 out of 5 stars Keen Observations, 8 July 2010
This book's title communicates the unique dual nature of its author's insights. At once a shameless and giddy fan of the genre (He Was Some Kind of a Man), McGillis is also an erudite and observant scholar (Masculinities in the B Western). Readers fearful of demasculating tripe or glib gender analyses may rest easy. The author offers a balanced and carefully phrased discussion of a genre that continues to inform modern cinema, however subtly: 'The white hat and clean clothes of the cowboy hero communicate goodness; it is this form's sign of moral strength, the way beauty is a sign of moral purity in the fairy tale. The convention of filming the hero in full frame as he rides his horse, the camera positioned just below mid level of the horse's body, constitutes another sign of goodness and heroism. Bad guys riding are usually shot from a distance, or when the close-up occurs the camera looks slightly down rather than up at the horse and rider. The films have their codes.' (p. 33)

Being a fan does not prevent clear and precise writing. McGillis has a fine mind and is not shy about sharing his enthusiasm and frustrations. He never confuses nostalgia for a true view of a false bygone era; yet at the same time he is aware of the paradoxical nature of his favored genre: heroic men in fancy clothes (not unlike the Japanese literary tradition of bishonen); overt morality tales in an essentially commercial endeavor; messages of duty, peace and conformity in films that turn on loners in dramatic action sequences. The juxtaposition of these mixed messages is discussed thoroughly, but never with a demeaning tone. McGillis does not sniff. He clearly loves B Westerns for what they are -- everything they are.
