4.0 out of 5 stars The first Mass Effect is a flawed masterpiece, 28 April 2012
This review is from: Mass Effect (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
After recently finishing Mass Effect 3, I decided to go back and start the trilogy again, and boy am I glad I did. I got a kick out of Mass Effect, but if you are interested in knowing more then read my review carefully, because Mass Effect is not a perfect game.

So, whats the story?:

The year is 2183, humanity discovered ruins of an alien race known only as the Protheans on Mars. They also discovered that Pluto's moon Charon was acctualy a century old space station known as a Mass Relay. When a current of element zero, or eezo, is sent through this hyper-dimensional stargate-esque teleporter, it allows the star ship to travel vast distances of space. Humanity soon discovered it was not alone in the galaxy, and joined a vast alliance of alien races. However, as all the alien species get along in one big happy family, a revelation is revealed, and a much darker, more dangerous threat is ready to take over the galaxy and is responsible for the disapearence of the Protheans. You play as Comander Shepard, and his destiny, as well as the future of the galaxy, depends on your actions...

So, now that your run doww, time to get into what makes this game great. Get ready, theres alot.

+ Personal Customization:
Shepard is your character to create. His looks, gender, back story, moral background, morality, and combat style is your decision to choose. There are dosens of armors to find and collect, as well as a deep customization system.

+ Making decisons
As a prodigy for humanity and the galaxys future, Shepard is naturally going to have difficult decisions to make, and things get heated very quickly.

+ Interesting Characters
You will meet many interesting charactes on your journey, and thankfully you will care about them and there backstories. Some you can even establish a love romance relationship

+ AAA+ voice acting
Mass Effect sets the bar for video game acting, a genre mostly plauged with rushed english dubs and poor generic actors. Mass Effect caries both a star cast of Kieth Davids and Seth Green, as well as some lesser known actors who gained fame by playing amazing roles as Shepards team and squad mates

+ A deep vast lore
Mass Effect will invest you fully in its universe, offering an amazing universe and lore to discover. The codex, the ingame wiki, will be your best freind for understanding your Rachni Wars to your FTL Ship drives.

+ Excellent weapon customization
You will gain lots of weapon mods that can be used to customize your weapons. Mass Effect offers a ridiculously good weapon customization.

+ Dozens of sidequests
Mass Effect is rich with side quests. Be it a simple fetch quest or an intergalatic search on a baron desert planet for a captured civilian

+ Fully open worlds to explore
The galaxy is full of fully open worlds to explore and collect artifacts. If you want to see everything, you better start looking

+ A huge range of weapons
You will find countless numbers of weapons to collect, completionist will take there time here

+ Dialog is excellent
Characters react realisticly, and feel human (or alien, as the case may be)

+ Astronomical Music
Some of the best game music ever. Period.

+ An interesting plot
The plot will keep you invested, as if the acting and lore was enough

+ Excellent artistic design
Ships, guns and planets all have a unique design to them unlike anything we have seen in sci-fi before

+ Deep dialog system
Like past BioWare games, convosation plays a part in determining your morality, and certain replys will effect your'e reputation with your crew as a heroic paragon or a badass renegade

+ Ingame dialog
Listening to strangers or your squad members talk, as well as the radio newscasts on what has been going on in the galaxy help make the galaxy feel alive

Unfortunatly, some of the technical side dosent keep up

- Texture pop in
While textures are good overall, there is alot of slow pop in

- As a third person shooter it plays horribly
A shonky cover system, clumsy duck system and an annoying over heating system, Mass Effect fails to live up to the third person shooter element

- Non story planets are generic
While the story planets are detailed, most side quest planets feel the same and you are likely to see the exact same thing except with a green field instead of a rocky plain

- Some squad members need to be more invested
While your two human squad members and Liara are heavily focoused on, your other alien freinds do deserve to play more part in the actual story, aside from just being optional squad mates. You will still be able to interact and talk with them, they just dont play as much of a vital role in the battle except extra help

- Fianlly, the Mako tank drives awfully
The infamous Mako is a hunk of junk, and has one of the most bizzar ''fizz-ics'' ive ever seen

Aside from a few technical issues, Mass Effect is an engaging emotional expereince that pays homage to classic sci-fi while adding an element of its own. A flawed masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars The little green game that made the Xbox, 11 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Halo (Xbox) (Video Game)
Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox, PC) Review
Developer: Bungie
Publisher: Microsoft
Genre: First Person Shooter
Date: 2000

Forget the idea that Bungie's last Halo title Halo Reach is the best in the series, because to find the best you must go back to the original. Back to Halo. Back to when shooters were based on health packs and generic corridors. Love it or hate it, the original Halo defined the future generation of shooters, and to this day, few of the recent big budget titles like Battlefield 3 and MW3 manage to live up to tge pure epic scale of Halo 1. Truly a masterpeice that fan's of the genre should experience.

It amazes me that people believe that the original has been outdated, and that the now iconic Master Cheif's first journey on the TV screen has not aged well. I can safely say to anyone taking IGN's word for it is wrong. Halo has not aged one bit. Well, to be honest, like every other game, Halo is far from perfect. The cheif jumps like hes in space, and the landing feels very soft. The gameplay may seem diffrent from modern shooters, as you cannot sprint, roll or do assainations. And finally, as to be expected from the earliest game in the series, graphics are not the most inpressive thing about the game. That said, some of the views and vista's are still very impressive, even to this day.

Now that all the bad points are out the way I can now tell you why this game is worth your money. Obviously, Halo re-envented the wheel of the FPS genre. The recharging sheild is not only a staple of the series, but also common for all big budget shooters. The game was also the first to feature third person vehicular combat, and in my opinion, that makes the series as fun as it is today.

The way the game only lets you carry two weapons at a time means that you must think what combination of guns will you choose to take down the on coming hostiles.

Speaking of guns, the variety here is impressive. Each gun has a diffrent feel to it. From the way you can charge up an attack with the plasma pistol, cure you spikes with the needler, or take down multiple bad guys with the rocket laucher. One problem, the infamous pistol is incredibally over powered. Fortunatly, realism has never mattered, and the most inportant thing about Halo is just how much fun it is. A game is nothing without a fun expereince to keep you playing.

The game can also be played in the four difficulty's, easy, normal, hard and legendary. If you are legend enough to complete the game on legendary, then the game gives you a special ending that I wont spoil! Halo also has quite a few top notch multiplayer games, including all the classic multiplayer games like slayer and death match, as well as co op in the campaign. So if you can get your mates over to give this classic another go, then you wont be stuck on what to do.

And of course, no game is complete without a fun story line. If you are wondering exactly why the series is called Halo, then experience this unforgetible storyline, complete with twists and lovable characters.

So, if you love great, classic inovative sci-fi shooters, you owe it to yourself to check out the best in the series, the orignal Halo. It really is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing remake!, 6 Oct. 2011
Many people argue Ocarina to be one of the best games ever, and this remake just makes it even better. Its only when you enter the deku tree that you realise how much of a makeover this game got! Gone are the blured backgrounds and replaced with acctual 3D models. The 3D effect is decent, but can muck your vision up when acctualy playing, and also be distracting in tough dungeons. I turned the 3D on in cutscenes only. Ocarina is getting a tad bit out of date now. Twilight Princess world is much bigger, and some of the town designs look very primitive, not in the right way. But if you are new to the game, buy the remake. It just looks gorgeous. I cannot recogmend this game enough! You also get lots for your money, as the master quest comes with the game as well. And if you get the collectors edition boxart like I did, you get a free poster! Yay!

2.0 out of 5 stars It will send you to sleep faster then you can say 'quick buck', 6 Oct. 2011
This review is from: SimAnimals (Wii) (Video Game)
MySims has never been a particurally exciting series, but the cute humour and bonkers gameplay makes the series worth checking out. Sadly, SimAnimals is nothing more than a terrible offense to the franchise. Its basically the Sims with animals. You plant crops, trees and plants and animals will start to visit your forest. And thats about all you do. You can unlock more of the woods, but its a very short game. The main issue is how boring it is. Sim Animals is harmless enough, but all you do is watch trees grow and animals run around. I got so bored I decided to start chucking a skunk into a nearby lake. But sadly this gamei s rated 3+ and the skunk didnt drown...
Another problem is the controls are iritating and hard to get used to, not to mention unresponsive. Shame this game had some good marketing and acctualy got a sequel, Sim Animals Africa. This game is dull right from the start.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Zelda game ever, 26 Sept. 2011
Yep, better than Ocarina of Time. Well, thats arguable. But what is the truth is that Twilight Princess is an amazing game. Again, it follows the tradition of having two diffrent dimensions to visit. In Twlight Princess, an unatural twilight has blanketed the once peaceful world of Hyrule, and when Link enters it, he becomes a wolf. First of all, the story. Its amazing. A huge step forward from the original games. The characters are interesting, and for Zelda standards, its not a bad story with a insight into the history of Hyrule. Its a much darker game, and while it has some humour, if you want a kid friendly Zelda, get Wind Waker. Gameplay is fo the most part the same, except when you become a wolf. As a wolf you gain diffrent ablillities. These sections reimind me of Okami. Graphics are perfect, and Hyrule is absolutly huge. There are secrets everywere and lots of compelling side quests. Only problem is that is a gamecube game with Wii controls. It dosent use the controls well enough like the upcoming Skyward Sword. But other than that, buy this if you like Zelda, you will not be disapointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disgrace to Tony Starks name, 25 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Iron Man (Wii) (Video Game)
I love Iroman, hes a great Super Hero! After getting a copy of Ironman for the Wii, I cannot tell you how much of a disgrace this game is. It (poorly) follows the story of the film, without explaining key plot points and making epic movie sequences look like a joke. Thats not the start of it. Ironman on Wii is a sloppy, boring cash in on a good super hero film. Flying controls are unbearable, and graphics are just unexceptable. Shooting rarely requires any tactics, just straif, fire, straif, fire, straif, fire, straif, fire etc... bosses are stupid, and normally a push over. Voice acting isnt terrible, with voices played by some of the movie cast. However, same cannot be said for the facial expressions, that are just awkward. When your suit loses power, you are treated to a repettive button bashing minigame were getting the combo right will result in the suit powering up again. This is tedious. Maybe some little kids might like it, but bad luck. Its full of curses and swears that make this games only audience this might apeal to out of the question. On the bright side, it does have tons of unlockable content, with diffeent suits you cn use in the few levels there is, but the god-awful AI, graphics, controls and gameplay is just unexceptible. One of the worst games on Wii. Sorry Ironman fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take a dive in the relaxing world of Endless Ocean, 25 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Endless Ocean (Wii) (Video Game)
When the Wii was first revailed, Nintendo promised to market the console towards casual fans just as much as hardcore gamers. While it was obvious the console would follow traditional kid freindly Nintendo antics, I would never of guessed them to go this far. A game entirely aimed at relaxation. This is Endless Ocean. A game that may seem comepletly alien to gamers from the shoot fist, think later background, but whats more suprising, Arika manage to pull this one off. Endless Ocean is a fantastic game, and one anyone looking for somthing new should try out. Thats not to say it will suit everyone. You play as a diver who travels the world with a way to sexy marine biolgist partner. Your objective is to study and examine all this diffrent fish. Imagine pokemon with sharks. You may ask of that is all you do. Well, pretty much. There is a plot, and while its very thin, should be enjoyable. However, the game forces nothing on you, letting you explore the map without any need for invisible walls or unlockable areas. While some areas require certan equipment to enter, it still wont be much of a challenge to unlock it. You will except requests from clients to take them on aquatic tours at certan times, seeing as the game uses a clock system were you are likely to incounter speciffic animals at diffrent times. The games has no risk at all, and gives about an hour of air. Its enough seeing as I never once run out of air. Sharks and giant squids shouldnt appose a threat, while I dont know if its sicentifically correct that penguins and polar bears live in the same sea, yet alone crawling up onto your boat. For hardcore Mortal Kombat lover, ignore Endless Ocean, but for everyone else, its worth a go. It may be boring, or it may be interesting. Its great for kids, allowing for an interesting interactive educational experience. The main question is witch is better? Endless Ocean or Endless Ocean 2? Well EO2 is certanly aimed for those with adventure in mind, as sharks and aligators can actually harm you. If you want a relaxing and educational experience, try out the original. The game is one of the most relaxing games on the Wii, with some superb underwater visuals to tighten the deal. It wouldnt be fair to end this review without a mention of Hayley Westernra's amazing sound track , while also allowing you to inport your own music while diving through SD card. Heres hoping for a Wii-U follow up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flawed in design, 25 Sept. 2011
This figure comes with a miniture scorpinok that can be attached to the end of Blackouts helicopter mode, and can be converted into a blaster in robot mode. I sadly have alot of grudges with this figure. He has bad poisture, and his feet are way too stumpy to support him. His huge gumpy feet fail to make him look one bit menacing, and he instead looks like a metallic idiot then a decepticon warrior. Another issue is scorpinok. Scorpy himself is very finely detailed, with a nice mettalic look to him. However, his visual apeal soon vanishes when you convert him to a gun. His tail makes him look stupid having it dislodged over his head, and he dosent look much like a gun and more like, well, a scorpion that has been twisted into a terrible mess of robotic parts. To be fair, this is all made up for with the fantastic vehicular mode. Ignore the feature of sticking scorpinok at the end , just use scorpy as a seperate figure. The chopper that this figure transforms into is simply stunning. A terifiying, movie accurate vehicle high in detail. Its not the most easy to transform into, but its one of my favroutes of the cyberverse collection. To sum up, dogy robot form and weapon, but you get two robots for the price of one, and an excellent vehicle mode. Its not a great transformer, and if you are not collecting the cyberverse figures, just pass this one on.
