5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly well-made bargain, 2 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I didn't buy this as a bar table, but to use as a standing desk. I'll fill in the detail at a later date, but I'd have to say that for the price and service, 5 stats is well deserved

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Image, Not a Pack, 19 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Despite the second image on the advert, these did not come in a pack of 3, they came as 3 loose pens in a Jiffy bag. Not an issue unless you were wrapping as a stocking filler (my case).

The pens don't look as if they've been used, so no complaints from that perspective.

Even without the misleading image, I think the usual expectation would be that they are a pack and not loose.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Performing Compact Bargain, 23 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Slightly smaller and lighter than expected, but it still stays where it's put.

Plus points:

* no blinding blue LED charging indicators. Can't tell you what a relief it is not to have yet another gadget lit up like a christmas tree. There's a single very subtle green LED on the top.

* adaptive charging rate genuinely works. Acid test was a Blackberry Q10; at 20% battery, plugged it in and it instantly quoted 8+ hrs to recharge; 10 seconds later it was 3.5 hrs; and so it continued, decreasing the overall charge time as the two devices negotiated, until settling at around 50 mins (when I got tired of checking)

* multiple devices seem to be supported with no issue; I had an iPod4 and a desktop scanner drawing power (ScanSnap S1300i that has the option of using 2xUSB connectors for power instead of external adaptor) at the same time

Minus points:

At this price it's a bit unfair to quibble, so these are more in the manner of a wish list I'd pay extra for

* Plug and cable are "captive". I'd have preferred it to be removable as a standard figure 8 socket making storage a bit more flexible. The cable is a decent length though

* a wall mounting option would be nice

Overall extremely impressed with it's compact nature and performance; so much so that I'm ordering a couple more to replace the nest of bedside cable and using it to power a speaker, LED light and phone charging in place.

Direct Sound EX29 Extreme Isolation Headphones
Direct Sound EX29 Extreme Isolation Headphones
Offered by DJ and Studio
Price: £119.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Good isolation, increasingly uncomfortable, 15 Aug. 2014
I've really rated these and didn't have the reservations about general build quality that other reviewers have - but I'm at a desk, not in a challenging environment.

However I've recently become more fatigued wearing them, and realised it's down to the replaceable earpads slowly becoming stiffer and more uncomfortable over time. These are designed as removable, but as yet I've found no cheap UK replacements for them (haven't been looking long).

Final rating will likely vary depending on the result

Foundation Trilogy [LegacyTitleID: 490212]
Foundation Trilogy [LegacyTitleID: 490212]

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Scifi and a Radiophonic Treat, 5 May 2014
I can understand other reviewers who found the voice acting, sound effect and music weren't to their tastes, but I thought it was a brilliant period production and that it was old enough to rise above sounding dated.

The ambient sound and "musical" interludes are pure BBC Radiophonic Workshop - reminiscent of Bebe and Louis Barron's score for Forbidden Planet.

No comment on the accuracy of reproduction of the original books as I've never read them, but entertaining and thought provoking in it's own right.

I haven't read any of Burroughs other work, and didn't come to this with any particular expectation, other then those you'd be lead to believe by the summary.

It's a somewhat meandering journey; if you want a definite arc to a story and a sense of resolution, likely not for you. If you're interested in soaking up the atmosphere of an alien way of life (for most of us) it's highly recommended.

The squalor and griminess come through on every page, as does the desperation accompanying this way of life.

There were many interesting diversions into the mechanics and biology of addiction, although if you listen to some of the later chapters on "Orgone therapy" you'll take Burrough's proclamations on medical matters with a pinch of salt.

T. Ryder Smith gives a great performance, clearly articulated with light characterisation, couldn't fault it.

I'd be interested in more of Burroughs' material on the basis of this, although I skipped through the various prefaces and introductions. They were so numerous I was getting tired of listening to the book before it had even started. Others more familiar with his work may get a lot out of them, but not for me.

The book itself is a page turner.

Harman/Kardon BT Premium Bluetooth Wireless Over-Ear Headphones with In-Line Remote and Mic - Silver/Black
Harman/Kardon BT Premium Bluetooth Wireless Over-Ear Headphones with In-Line Remote and Mic - Silver/Black

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming at best, 21 Oct. 2013
I bought these at around the £110 mark - overpriced at that.

The headphones build quality is high, and they are well packaged, but that's where it ends for me.

I suspect a lot depends on what you're using to talk to them, but for me:

1) The power / bluetooth button is awkwardly placed, and it's a pain to see what's happening when you press it - problematic when the main feedback is at the colour and pattern of the led.

2) In common with all multiple use buttons, it's a PITA to get the timing correct for turning on / off / connecting / disconnecting. I inevitably find it take two or three goes staring intently at the button with the headphones upside down to understand what state they're in and get them connected

3) Stuttering and dropouts, even at < 1m from the transmitter

4) Sound quality is decent, but only marginally better than that of my cheap back-of-the-neck-and-over-the-ear headphones for 1/5 of the price. Not a large enough distinction to justify the cost

5) On the upside, battery life seems decent, and there's a reasonable amount of isolation. Not comfortable for extended periods for me though, whether with the small or large headband.

Just not good enough at the price.

Not a clone of the radio series, so adjust expectations and judge it on it's own merits. Well worth your time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Check Dimensions before ordering, 19 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an apparently identical bin to one I bought at Dunelm Mill for almost the same price.

However it's about 2/3 of the size of the original.

I put it a 3* not because it's the *wrong* size -something I should have checked and my own stupidity - but because I don't think it represents particularly good value at it's actual size compared to the original.

Decent quality and fast delivery though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware iMac Compatibility Issues, 19 April 2013
PLUS

* Far better sound quality than I expected
* Surprisingly long battery life
* Inexpensive considering the functionality
* Comfortable
* Excellent trouble free use with a Sony Xperia Ray phone.

MINUS

* Biggest problem, unstable connection with an iMac. Required deleting the device and then re-pairing / selecting every time I wanted to use subsequently. Effectively rules them out for this use case
* Perhaps related to the above, continuous microphone stuttering and dropout
* Flimsy construction; the folding action on the joints has become very loose after a short time
* LED indicators far too bright for night-time use, and inconstistent feedback
* Buttons a bit loose and inaccurate

Despite a lot of entries in the MINUS column, these are mostly inconsequential. Easily a 4* if not for the iMac pairing / stuttering issue, so generally recommended.
