OK so this is a big bit of kit - let's get that out of the way first. Think oversize watch, a TW Steel or similar. As such you need a second wrist if you wear a watch and fortunately most of us are provided with one.

It looks great on and whereas I was a little sceptical but the method of fastening, which differs greatly from the usual push to fit, it works well.

The first couple of times you will struggle but believe me you get better at it. Of course, some people will simply put in on and rarely take it off. I suppose the one time you need it would be the point at which you did not wear it so beware.

I have showered and swum wearing it and it seems to survive both although it can take some time to dry out.

Overall great bit of kit should you ever need that piece of para cord in an emergency otherwise it looks good until that day happens. One thing I would say is that it would be a one time bit of kit as you could not re-braid it but what is your life worth?

Nathan Bedford Forrest: In Search of the Enigma
Nathan Bedford Forrest: In Search of the Enigma

5.0 out of 5 stars The other genius, 28 May 2015

Shelby Foote said the American Civil War produced 2 genuine geniuses - one was Abraham Lincoln and the other was Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Read this book and you will see why. Bedford was a man of his time and while we may look back and see fault from our perspective with some of his activities before, during and after the Civil War you cannot disagree with the fact that as a military commander he was peerless in that war with much to teach us even at this great remove.

The book is well written and although the authors have both clearly fallen under his spell it manages to maintain the level of objectivity required to be good history.

It does not gloss over his background and how his fortune was made. It deals effectively with the question which still divides many - the Fort Pillow Massacre and lives up to its sub-title of going in search of a man who was clearly an enigma.

It has some excellent maps of Forrest's campaigns which add greatly to one's understanding and is well indexed.

Overall a great read and introduction to a man who was the only southern cavalry officer feared by Grant and Sherman. You will not be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish, 19 April 2015

This is basically a good idea let down by a very poor implementation. Avoid like the plague. It will not work and seems designed to get you to part wth the cost of Amazon Prime.

Amazon needs to be very careful as, of late, all their publicity is largely negative. At some point this is going to cost them in terms of reputation and brand image. The Fire TV that simply does not work adds to this.

Avoid, do not go near.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, 1 April 2015

An overlooked show with a strange feeling of another great classic. The other classic that is also massively underrated - Jericho.

I suppose it is because both are largely confined to a single small town and there are many others similarities.

Well worth watching even if you have seen similar shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the sum parts, 29 Mar. 2015
Ok I will be perfectly honest here - I really wanted to hate this film - as in Howard the Duck hate it.

However, it is done so well and with so much enthusiasm and sheer verve that it is really hard to do anything other than love it. The characters are great and the script is full of throw away one liners.

Basically it is about a bunch of characters who do not work on their own. However, when they come together the chemistry is right and the film is actually about friendship.

Throw in a great soundtrack and good action and it is actually a lot better than the sum parts.

If or does not make you smile then you have a problem.

Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Not Visited and Never Will
Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Not Visited and Never Will

4.0 out of 5 stars Utterly infuriating, 18 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an utterly infuriating book - but in a good way. It leaves you wanting to know more, so much more and in fact I defy you to read it without the need to go to the internet to find out more about the subjects - the islands.

You may not agree with the author's choices and there are probably better and more remote islands perhaps being saved for a volume 2. The prose alongside each map is at times obscure and leaves you wanting to research that as much as the maps. It certainly suffers from translation from the original language (German) hence only 4 stars. However, once picked up (and providing you have good internet access) this book will take you to places you did not know existed and worlds beyond. You will certainly not be disappointed unless you lack imagination.

Paper targets as advertised and thin paper at that. Ok for indoor use but useless outside.

Go for card at not much more money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly dated, 7 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Red Mars (Paperback)
Science fiction is often written as little more than an extrapolation of the present which sometimes works. Unfortunately this one doses not. The emphasis of the American system versus the Soviet one is dated and annoying and detracts for the fairly thin story. It is far less about the conquering and colonisation of Mars than the politics of the 70s. There are some extremely annoying characters and it is not particularly well written or engaging. I was really looking forward to reading this book but was ultimately very disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Binbound, 2 Jan. 2015
This review is from: MARSBOUND (Hardcover)
Very poor stuff and the fact that Haldemen followed it up with 2 others to make up a trilogy is all the more surprising. It would appear to be written for juveniles but I doubt that was the intent.

I managed to stick with it to the end but could not wait for it to come quick enough.

I have just put a copy in the bin and quite frankly I feel sorry for the poor bin for having to put up with this rubbish.

Dreadful.
