4.0 out of 5 stars Unravelling difficulties, 15 Dec. 2009
This is a volume most useful to people who've made a start at genealogy and come up against the wall of dispersed Irish records (if, indeed, they still exist). For complete beginners it is one to tuck into the bookcase for the time being.

4.0 out of 5 stars Death and Judgment/A Venetian Reckoning, 30 Sept. 2009
Me too! I'd just finished A Venetian Reckoning and had a heavy case of Deja Vue! There must be a way of warning buyers about double-titling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taste of a past age, 29 Aug. 2009
To my shame, I didn't know of this book's existence until an Italian acquaintance asked about it. It describes perfectly the Italy of the Victorian, post-Garibaldi era. If you don't read Dickens for pleasure you may find his prose-style a little trying but keep going- it's worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bees for my honey, 8 Feb. 2009
I bought this book as a gift for my thirteen-year-old nephew who was keen to keep bees. It is perfect; the text is clear and easy to use, a mixture of practical beekeeping, bee lore and delicious recipes. It never leaves him.

The Burnt House (Peter Decker & Rina Lazarus Novels)

1.0 out of 5 stars Scorching? No!, 22 Jun. 2008
Faye Kellerman's choice of language is, at best, wooden, and more often very odd: characters don't weep or cry, their eyes water; people don't stretch, they roll their shoulders, and so on.Plotting holds very little surprise and, far from tension, the plot lumbers along at sleep-walking pace. I wonder if the dustjacket critics quotations refer to a different book entirely.I've really tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because I enjoyed The Ritual Bath but it's been downhill ever since. If you enjoy a good detective story try another author!
