THE PROMISE OF HAPPINESS
THE PROMISE OF HAPPINESS
Price: £1.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 17 Mar. 2014
A warm and insightful story of three sisters and their respective, and very different, family lives. Well-written, and better than chick-lit, if you like Maeve Binchy you should like this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job - but packaging could be a bit more robust, 14 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The original battery was no longer holding charge, so we needed a new one. This does the trick - fits perfectly, and holds the charge for a reasonable time, taking into account the usage.

The only slight complaint would be that the bubble wrap packaging protected the body of the battery well, but not the ends, so a small piece of the corner chipped off during transit. This didn't affect it being fitted and working okay, so we didn't make a fuss about it, but its worth feeding back this information for future deliveries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good supernatural thriller, 22 July 2013
This review is from: Prophecy (Kindle Edition)
Having read the modern Peter James police thrillers I am picking off the earlier supernatural novels one by one, and this one didn't disappoint. Peter James has a smooth, well-crafted writing style and has the ability to develop a story without giving too much away at the beginning. If I have any complaint it is that the story wound up pretty quickly and seemed a bit rushed. I did really enjoy it despite this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, 30 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Hidden Agenda (Paperback)
The build-up to the story was pretty good, with the characters and their secrets being developed nicely throughout the book. The perpetrator of the crime became obvious fairly early on, but that wouldn't have mattered that much. What did annoy me was the rapid and very unsatisfactory ending, almost as though the author had run out of space and had to wrap up the story quickly. Surely a bit more time could have been spent on tying up the loose ends in a more robust and believable way. A good story ruined at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mills & Boon meets the raunchy werewolves - great fun!, 11 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the first werewolf story I have read - I downloaded it because it was free to give it a try. I'm pleased that i did!

The story is essential a romantic, suspense novel - along the lines of Mills & Boon. Made interesting by describing the challenging issues encountered in the modern-day life of a werewolf, who balances human traits against the primeval animal urges of a wolf, with some good, raunchy sex thrown in. Curiously compelling, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Booked for Murder (Lindsay Gordon Crime Series, Book 5)
Booked for Murder (Lindsay Gordon Crime Series, Book 5)
by V. L. McDermid
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Pedestrian and predictable, 2 May 2013
After reading the author's "The Mermaids Singing" (the first Tony Hill book) and enjoying it tremendously I had high expectations for this book. I was however disappointed by the flimsy writing style, and the lack of depth and credibility of the characters. After enjoying the incredible detail and complexity of the plot of The Mermaids Singing, this novel seemed trivial and lack-lustre. A great disappointment.

The Midwife's Confession
The Midwife's Confession
by Diane Chamberlain
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.91

5.0 out of 5 stars You never really know somebody......., 23 April 2013
Another great book from Diane Chamberlain. When a close friend commits suicide, a tangled web begins to unravel which will impact on her circle of friends. A tad predictable, but with enough twists and unexpected turns to keep the reader's interest.

The Mermaids Singing (Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, Book 1)
The Mermaids Singing (Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, Book 1)
by Val McDermid
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Frightening, 20 April 2013
The first of Val McDermid's books to feature Tony Hill (Wire in the Blood), this book is scary, horrifying and gory, but frighteningly realistic. Even the "heroes" are flawed and believable. A fantastic book, can't wait to read more of the series.

My Sister's Keeper
My Sister's Keeper
by Jodi Picoult
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and heart-breaking, 9 April 2013
This review is from: My Sister's Keeper (Paperback)
Having a sick child is every parent's worst nightmare. What wouldn't you do to try to save your child? This story contains such truth that it must have been drawn from personal experience. Thought-provoking and very moving.

Worth Dying For: (Jack Reacher 15)
Worth Dying For: (Jack Reacher 15)
by Lee Child
Edition: Paperback
Price: £4.00

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit predictable but still enjoyable reading, 28 Mar. 2013
Lee Child writes in such a way that, once started, you want to carry on reading, and this book is no exception. I really always knew how the story was going to end (apart from the mystery of what was in the consignment in the truck) but Child's prose is so readable that it really didn't matter to me.

I read this as a stand-alone story, but having read some other reviews I now realise this was a continuation of another story. The only drawback for me was that Jack Reacher enters the story with injuries that were not fully explained, but I could live with that.

Action packed and heavy on the violence, this Jack Reacher story is a tale of the vigilante who delivers justice for the downtrodden and passes sentence on those who think they are outside the law! Three cheers for Jack!!!
