3.0 out of 5 stars OK movie, but not worthwhile, 16 April 2008

This review is from: The Nanny Diaries [DVD] (DVD)
Scarlett Johansen and Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney. With a combination like that I had to see "The Nanny Diaries", but as sweet as the movie is, I was expecting something else.

Annie has just graduated college and her mother hopes she will find a job in the jungle of corporate America. Annie, however, is more interested in finding out who she really is and antropology.

Apparently, when you walk through New York's central park you will be bombarded by job offers by society moms. And this is where Annie's stint as Annie the Nanny begins, narrated as an antropological study.

Did I laugh? Yes. Is this a recommendable movie? Ye-ah, but expect too much. I doubt that I will remember the plot in this movie in a couple of months. And with the marvellous cast, I had expected more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely movie with enthusiasm and dedication, 4 April 2008
This review is from: Miss Potter [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
"Miss Potter" is the fictionized story of Beatrix Potter fast approaching oldmaid-status in the turn of the century London. Her mother has introduced several appropriate suitors, but Beatrix has declined them all.

Miss Potter's aspirations go in another direction. She wants to publish a children's book. In the process, she falls in love with her publisher, although she never gets to marry him.

I was a little apprehensive to see Peter the Rabbit and Potter's other characters moving on the paper like little cartoon characters, but it worked. The moving characters come to show Miss Potter's involvement and dedication to her characters, drawings, and stories.

The enthusiasm and dedication that Miss Potter has, is what truly rises this movie above so many others.

Another reveiwer noted, at Renee Zellweger is not the right person to play Miss Potter. I have to admit that I like her in the role. She portrays a subtle revolt against her parents and society and almost childish glee towards her drawings, stories, and the fact that she gets them published.

Lovely movie!

Daughter of the East: An Autobiography
Daughter of the East: An Autobiography
by Benazir Bhutto
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU NEED TO READ THIS, 2 April 2008
I wanted to learn more about Benizir Bhutto after her assasination and "Daughter of the East" just fell into my lap. Another reviewer has noted that the autobiography only focusses on a little part of Bhutto's life and political carreer - and I agree. However, I would like to promote "Daughter of the East" as mandatory reading for everyone.

Chronological "Daughter of the East" covers Zia's period in Pakistan from the late 1970s to 1988, but that statement does not begin to encompass the dimensions of "Daughter of the East". "Daughter of the East" is a personal account of Benizir Bhutto and her youth, 20s, and 30s. It is about being the eldest daughter of the prime minister, it is about being a woman and politically active in a predominately Islamic country, it is about political oppression, about democracy, about faith, freedom, and hope for the future. It is about torture and imprisonment, about human rights for every individual, and about ethics and the means to an end.

You really need to read this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brutality and humanity in OZ, 2 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Oz : Complete Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
OZ - rough letter tattooed on an arm in Oswald Penitentiary and the prison drama about the inmates and staff in the section of OZ call Emerald City. Any connotation to Dorothy and Toto stops here. OZ is serious, tough, uncompromising, real, stripped to the bone and still manages to show the characters as people, good or bad. There are no one dimensional characters here, and all the actors step up to the challenge.

I still haven't decided whether I like the show or not, but I recommend it for its brutality and humanity. No, the two are not conflicting here. This is the kind of show that like it or not, it stays with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am speechless - simply perfect!, 23 Mar. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Atonement [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
The click, click, click of a type-writer becomes the music of "Atonement". It is Briony writing a play as a child and the beginnings of a novel as a young woman about what she has done and the consequences of her actions.

"Atonement" is the story of a passionate love between Cecilia and Robbie, and how they are torn apart by a foul accusation, which lands Robbie in prision and later as a private in WW2, and how they try to reach eachother again.

"Atonement" is also the journey of Briony from a naive girl, who sees something out of a window and disinterprets, to a young nurse in training, who begins to understand reality and the dashing of hopes, to the dying novelist, who has published her novel "Atonement".

The plot is one thing, but this movie is truly a masterpiece. It's the costumes, locations, cinematrography, direction - simply every single thing. And because "Atonement" is so complete, it is a joy to watch and worthy material to discuss at length.

4.0 out of 5 stars The inner realm of women - almost a cultural study, 22 Mar. 2008
In her eighties, Lily writes a memoire of her life in rural China in the late 19th century.

A life confined to the inner realm of women. This is the novel's greatest feat, but also the downside. At times, I was almost angry at the fact that Lily's world is so small.

"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" is a view into that inner realm of Chinese woman, where the birth of a girl is another mouth to feed, how a young bride is under the rule of her mother-in-law, but it is also the story of nu shu - women's secret writing and the power of friendship between women.

I would definitely recommend this novel as it pulls you in to a world of making shoes for golden lilies and wonderful friendship. However, I would note that the book is insular in some ways.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a capitvating horror movie, 15 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Captivity [DVD] (DVD)
Creepy yes, but not the under-your-skin-horror-movie that stay with you.

The creepiness of "Captivity" has more to do with the cinematography and bare concrete walls of the locations than the plot.

I had heard the press of how the posters for the movie were taken down from some theaters and was expecting a really good horror movie. However, "Capitivity" does rise to the occasion. The viewer guess the main plot very quickly and then it is just a matter of seeing it play out with actors that seems to be more in a school play than on the little screen.

Kudos to the cinematographer, even though I agree with another reviewer who calls the movie "jerky".

I, Vampire
I, Vampire
by Michael Romkey
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Stands out from the crowd, 11 Mar. 2008
This review is from: I, Vampire (Mass Market Paperback)
Generally, many novels of vampires and the like are horribly superficial, but "I, Vampire" stands out.

The year is 1989, when David Parker, a 1-year-old vampire begins to write a journal of his life and experiences as a vampire and of the strange happenings around him. Just to give you a taste: David was getting a divorce and comtemplating suicide, when he meets and falls in love with Tatjana, a vampire with a Russian connection. He has a tutor - Mozart, who teaches the novice vampire a thing or two. Then there is the entire division between the Illuminata-group and a group surrounding Cesare Borgia. The latter group counting Jack the Ripper, who really hasn't changed much, since he frolicked in London. Enough said.

I liked reading this novel because it is action-driven, but at the same time has a thoughtful slowness to it, the way a vampire would write having eternity to do so.

Enjoy!
Louise.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick, Magical Read, 21 Feb. 2008
"Burning Water" is the story of police man Mark, who works on a murder case in Dallas that isn't covered in the police manual. Being sensitive himself, he calls in old-friend Di, a veritable witch with remarkable investigative and magical skills. The case involves the untimely and grusome deaths, including flaying of a number of people - in something had has connection to Aztec gods.

"Burning Water" is quick, thrilling read, but I don't think I'll remember the story in detail in a couple of months. What I will remember is the excellent description of magic. The practiced magic truly leaves the pages and becomes real. (Well, you get my drift!)

This is a great novel for any time when you want something light and enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suburbia has never been this interesting!!!, 8 Feb. 2008
"Little boxes, little boxes". "They are all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look just the same." The title song becomes just one of those tunes that you humm to yourself while selecting cheese at the supermarket and thinking how unlucky Nancy Botwin is. Here she is, widower, mother of two, up and going entrepeneur and there just happens to be 4 other grow houses in the neighbourhood - and she finds out her boyfriend is a DEA agent. I mean seriously!!

While I don't believe season 2 has the same level of humor as season 1, season 2 is definitly incredibly funny and has more depth.

Watch it - and enjoy!!

Louise
