It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Season 1 [DVD]
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Season 1 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Glenn Howerton
Price: £8.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Painfully Funny, 11 Mar. 2015
There are a whole slew of US Sitcoms that don't reach our shores (some that sadly do). It's Always Sunny is one of those that we could really do with. It's a quite edgy, no laughter track affair that centre's around a bar. The four main characters are in a race to outdo each other in selfishness and every episode set's up hilarious, often totally non PC events which are painfully funny to watch.
In Series One the highlights include The grandfather of two of the gang being a Nazi, a break-in that leads to the gang suffering from gun fever and an episode where Charlie (the janitor with a high vocal and low morals) using his alleged cancer diagnosis for his own gain. I did say it wasn't politically correct.

If you like your sitcoms with a bit of an edge and the humour to be a slow build rather than one liners then this is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silky Sophomore Soul, 10 Mar. 2015

This second album for Matthew E White has a lot to live up to. The first album was a favourite of many and set the bar high. However, the man himself has stated that 'no album with ten good songs is a bad album' and set out to achieve that. And largely he succeeds. There are some songs that don't quite work, Tranquility is a little too meandering despite its good intentions - its a tribute to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. But the high points are many. Holy Moly builds sound upon sound to reach a huge climax. Rock & Roll is Cold is a cracking rocking number. The drums propel the good tracks through and their absence on the slower numbers is felt. That said the soul on offer here is one which is immediate and rewards multiple listens.

Public Service Broadcasting's excellent debut album posed one important question. Was this a gimmick and if not how could you repeat the trick on a follow up. The Race For Space answers that question easily and is the equal of its predecessor. A concept album it uses the public service broadcasting around the space race, the NASA audio and Smoke Faries (for reasons to follow) to great effect. This is not a chronological sequence. The album starts with the Rice address by JFK, accompanied by a choir. Reaching a climax around the infamous 'we choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because the are hard.' Its rousing stuff, just like the speech. Other tracks follow familiar paths to the previous album with Go being a glorious guitar riff amongst the descending sequence of Apollo 11. Gagarin is a funk work out which is memorable. Fire in the Cockpit is a haunting number that looks at the death of three astronauts. Valentina is the departure here as it uses The Smoke Fairies vocals instead of PSB. The reason for this, made clear in the excellent liner notes, is that there were no female voices in PSB at the time. So to give this number, which celebrates the first female cosmonaut its proper due Smoke Fairies are the vocals. It works well.

PSB are no one trick ponies and this is a follow up which rouses the soul as it trips through a memorable period in recent history. I would recommend buying the actual CD on this occasion for two reasons. The first being the liner notes which make a great read. The second being the dual cover, one depicting Apollo 11 and the other Sputnik. I am no space geek but loved this.

Slurrup

4.0 out of 5 stars Guitar pop, 11 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Slurrup (Audio CD)
The greatest problem with pop music is its disposable nature. When its done well its sounds almost effortless. This leads to it being easy to dismiss as easy to do. Liam Hayes latest effort, now set free by using his own name instead of Plush which he was previously known as, is a psych influenced pop album that harks back to another time whilst keeping its feet in the here and now.

Its all short pop punches which hook you in. One Way Out is a pop gem of a number which trills along without resonating deep meaning. Fight Magic with Magic stands as a counterpoint to this with a slower darker feel (not very dark actually) that delivers a more lingering impact.

As a guitar driven pop album this is a little gem which is as light an effort as you are likely to hear

5.0 out of 5 stars Big and feature packed, 11 Feb. 2015
Bought this based on price and reviews. Very impressed. It comes with a non plumbed water dispenser (ideal for us as its in the freezer side) which delivers water, ice cubes or fine ice cubes. It can get clogged if you don't use it regularly and it can be a little noisy once you refill it. It takes up a large part of the freezer as well. The fridge comes with various compartments. The fresh food shelf is useful and the metal wine rack gets a bit added to it every now and again. The settings are simple to follow and allow for you to key lock, set on holiday mode and turn the display off. As well as setting the temperature for the fridge and freezer. The fridge also has a feature that reduces the smell of the food in there which works as despite the smelly cheese and other aroma's in there we have never found a smell in the fridge itself. The fast freeze and fast chill sections work a treat when you have just come back from the shops.

It is a little noisy at times and you need to ensure you have space for it. However, it is good value and has enough space for the family. SO I'd recommend it

4.0 out of 5 stars Indie Rock Goodness, 11 Feb. 2015
This review is from: A Flourish and A Spoil (Audio CD)
The Districts second album comes with the buzz of hype in the music press. Promising a new sound and band to love they confound those expectations by sounding like everything before but still worthy of some praise. Peaches, Hounds and Sing The Song are instant grabbers of attention. On Peaches the lead vocal is almost delivered in a Malkmus drawl that develops into a standard indie thrash about that could have been recorded at any time between now and 1990 - no bad thing. Sing The Song starts off as a slow burning ballad that burns into a blistering chorus that begs to be heard live, probably at the end of the set and probably with accompaniment from the audience.
It doesn't all work. Suburban Smell is an acoustic track that fades from memory not long after the final note. This bank works better when the amp is on and Heavy Begs is a great example of this and may be coming to an radio station near you soon. It certainly deserves to.

The Districts aren't the future of rock. They aren't going to remould the landscape on this effort alone. But for now they are an exciting and promising act with just enough here to promise a very bright future indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Genius, 11 Feb. 2015

Father John Misty aka Josh Tillman, formerly of the Fleet Foxes, has a weight of expectation on this his second album under the pseudonym. With explicit lyrics, a tongue firmly placed in his cheek and quite a bit of baggage this album is a delight and lives up to those expectations. Largely guitar and piano based this builds slowly throughout the eleven tracks to gives a melodic, sometimes awkward viewpoint of the protagonist. Sometimes it feels like every song is a counterpoint to something else. Bored in the USA is a slowed down answering call to the Bruce Springsteen Born in The USA anthem. It also includes the audio equivalent of the safety wink with canned laughter coming in during the denouement where he decries the modern state of America, The Night Josh Tillman... and When You're Smiling Astride Me sound like they are a companion set to the John Grant album Pale Green Ghosts. Ideal Husband picks the pace up and is delivered in such a bitter manner you can taste the lemons, its almost so self deprecating it hurts.

This is an album that grows with every listen. It may sound like its been influenced by others but it is as much of itself as anything else. Its truly dizzying to listen to at times. So early in the year we have a high water mark for albums and bitterness that may not be bettered over the next ten months.

So one of the reasons I bought a PS4 was to get this. Having had an xbox in the last gen I heard about this game and wanted to play it. So I bought and waited. And it was worth the wait.

The story is a simple one (if only it was actually). Ellie is a young girl who holds the key to a vaccine from the zombie plague that has decimated America. Joel is her companion. And that's about as much as you are getting as the storyline is the key thing for this game. The gameplay is a typical one of forced perspective shooter with various melee and weaponry drip fed (and I mean drip fed at times) to you throughout. Its all intercut with sequences which push the story onwards.

In a typical game review there would now be a discussion of game mechanics, what works and doesn't. I'll cut that bit short by saying it all works, it can be tough as times due to the lack of ammo. However, this is secondary really. Its the storyline and eagerness to move forward through Joel and Ellie's story that drives you on. Put simply there hasn't been another game that gets as much out of the story for a long time. Its a character piece with a game behind it and some shocks and surprises.

They are making a Hollywood film of this. They have already said they are going to have to trim down the dialogue from the game as it will be too long. So if you don't enjoy long cut sequences stay away.

The question though is this one. Is it any good on PS4? Absolutely. It looks fantastic. There are some clever uses of the controller which lead you to believe they have thought about this and it plays like a dream.

The Last of Us was named a classic almost as soon as it was released. Sometimes you need to believe the hype. I didn't...I do now.

De'Longhi KG79 Professional Burr Grinder
De'Longhi KG79 Professional Burr Grinder
Price: £34.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective, 5 Jan. 2015
This coffee grinder is simple to use and effective. Only two dials on the machine. One is for the number of cups you want, the other is for the coarseness of the grind. You just press the button and the hopper fills with ground coffee.
It's not very noisy, its reasonably priced and its easy to use. It does need filling by more than you need as if you put too few beans in it won't cut out, it will just whirr away. However, as an economical grinder this is just the job.
