5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and evocative - recent past and ever present regrets ....., 24 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Dramatic. Exciting - why has no-one made this into a film, or better still, a thrilling tv series with multitudinous cliff -hangers? A very skilled manipulation of reader and narrative, blended with nostalgia for lost innocence and a world fractured by political and technical change. But people and their dreams and ambitions and disillusionment don't change. A beautiful and subtle translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuine insight into an unusual life, 17 Nov. 2012

I felt I knew something about Patrick Leigh Fermor from his books. But this biography, of a successful writer whose colourful life had some well known high points but many struggles and a notable incompatibility with conventional lifestyle, fulfils a difficult task with grace and appreciation. As a family friend, Artemis Cooper has access to documents and close contacts of the subject which is unsurpassed; she handles all this weight of expectation with a light touch and conveys a fuller picture of the man than he himself allowed to his wider public.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travel prepared in unfamiliar territory, 23 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very detailed and attractively produced - essential information and encouragement, as Transylvania remains quite remote and inaccessible compared with European travel destinations in general. But well worth the effort, as this book will surely inspire you and inform you to just the right degree, and help you choose where to go and how to enjoy your visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars another world - but ours, 23 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A completely engrossing account of a vanishing way of life, and an overwhelming but inevitably ephemeral personal experience. A tribute to the many skills of the author - he becomes immersed in an ancient and foreign lifestyle which appeals to him in its apparent simplicity, and can convey this movingly. Real people and real places - but little known, part of the European Union but life remains rooted in the past. For better or for worse?

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition, 4 Nov. 2009

Very attractive and clear, well organised with original or favourite recipes using the best and freshest ingredients. The photographs are an added inspiration to the cook looking for an interesting and varied range of dishes based on the seasonal calendar. The recipes I have tried so far have worked well, encouraging me to continue to explore this book for ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Booker runner -up, 4 Nov. 2009

This review is from: The Glass Room (Hardcover)
Very enjoyable and interesting - changing times, people and places during the twentieth century, set mostly in a fictitious Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic. The room of the title is the real 'hero'. There is a kind of family saga which unfolds around the surviving architectural setting, and is described with imagination and sensitivity. The events leading up to, during and after the second world war are the authentic mechanism of the story.
