4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and detailed retelling of the Borgias' story, 19 April 2014
A thorough and detailed recounting of the infamous Borgias and their place in history - a little hard to get through at times, and would benefit from a little judicious pruning, but overall good. I had the usual preconceived ideas about this family, having read about them many years ago and with vague memories of the rather old BBC TV series. However, this book serves to put them in context and attempts to explain why they acted as they did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value and quality, 18 April 2014
A good price for a decent quality felt, unlike some others I've had recently from Ebay and other suppliers. Have had this brand before and it seems to be consistently good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable historical tale based on a true story, 16 April 2014
This review is from: Sinful Folk (Kindle Edition)
Enoyable if sometimes a bit gruesome. An interesting tale, based on reality, and well written, vividly depicting the hardships of common folk in the 1300s. The mystery revolves around Mear, a woman pretending to be a man, and her past, but when her son is one of the boys deliberately burned in a house fire, she must travel to London with her son's body to seek justice.

Well written, and I would look out for more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, 16 April 2014
Loved it! Could not put it down, and finished in a couple of days. Somewhat similar in style to Salman Rushdie's writing, with a hint of Susannah Clarke (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell).

Absolutely fab, and while this kind of book is not everyone's cup of tea, if you do like this genre then you really shouldn't miss this

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to get into, confusing at first, 11 April 2014
This review is from: Marriage Material (Kindle Edition)
I found it hard to understand the two conflicting viewpoints until about halfway through the book, and thought it was not made clear that one was a flashback. Some of the characters were well described, others not so. There were some laboured attempts at humour, and overall found it not particularly interesting until about two thirds of the way through.

Pomegranates & Pine Nuts: A Stunning Collection of Lebanese, Moroccan & Persian Recipes
Pomegranates & Pine Nuts: A Stunning Collection of Lebanese, Moroccan & Persian Recipes
by Bethany Kehdy
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars I thought I would find a lot of dishes I ..., 10 April 2014
I thought I would find a lot of dishes I would recognise from having lived in Turkey for 10 years, as there are many similarities in Middle Eastern and Turkish foods. However it was a pleasant surprise to see that most of the recipes were quite new to me, some rather unusual and with what seems to be a modern approach. The introduction was interesting, but would benefit from some judicious editing to change some clumsy sentences and weed out the odd error.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric tale of Blanche la Danseuse, 10 April 2014
This review is from: Frog Music (Kindle Edition)
Having read and enjoyed 'Slammerkin' by this author, I was not disappointed with 'Frog Music'. There are similarities with Slammerkin, and the lead female character was not particularly likeable at the beginning, but became more so as she tried to right past wrongs. At the end of the story, there was a surprise bonus in the form of copious notes and historical info (a surprise to me at least, as I hadn't realised this was based on real characters).

Sunshine on Scotland Street (The 44 Scotland Street Series Book 8)
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good read from the prolific Mr McCall Smith, 8 April 2014
Love all of McCall Smith's books, can't really find anything to criticise! Another tale of dear Bertie and the denizens of Scotland Street, and enjoyable as usual. Perhaps not quite as amusing as previous books, but still enjoyable, gentle and entertaining.
