5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a gangster film., 2 Feb. 2004
This review is from: Brighton Rock [1947] [DVD] (DVD)
Fantastic film adaptation of the Graham Greene novel. I had read the novel prior to seeing the film and was not disappointed at all. Very realistic, sinister and disturbing gangster movie with a murder-mystery twist which makes it even more compelling. This film really blew me away!
The DVD package unfortunately has nothing to offer other than the "chapter selection". No subtitles, production notes or behind the scenes facts. Very disappointing for such a wonderful film but definitely worth adding to any serious movie collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate example of British Free Cinema, 2 Feb. 2004
Karel Reisz and Tony Richardson joined forces and created the most representative film about life in England’s industrial north of the 60’s. Albert Finney will always be remembered for his powerful performance as a young factory worker who rebels against his humdrum life and the social establishments.
This characteristic British Free Cinema film is a must for any serious film collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first cinematic slacker, maybe?, 2 Feb. 2004
This review is from: Billy Liar [DVD] (DVD)
A surreal comedy set during England’s swinging sixties. Tom Courtney is unbelievably funny as a working class boy unable to leave the safety of his family home and venture out on his own. He creates a fantastic world he retreats to when his daily encounters and unconventional actions get out of hand. Not even Julie Christie can drag him out into reality.
One of the most entertaining films in cinema history, Billy Liar is a universal character that has surely set the bases for many slacker characters in film since then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful English drama, 2 Feb. 2004
This drama offers a gripping story and outstanding performances. The affair between a frigid widow and a professional rugby player who carries the violence of the football field into his personal life is painfully detailed and will have you captivated throughout the whole film.
A powerful film characteristic of the British dramas of the 50’s and 60’s based on working class life in rural England. Director Lindsay Anderson is one of the major contributors to this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding English drama, 2 Feb. 2004
This review is from: Room At The Top [DVD] (DVD)
Powerful drama with impressive performances that will have you captivated. Admittedly the base of this story has been recycled so many times in cinema since but this film explores characters and situations in a realistic, true to British Free Cinema way. Won an Oscar for best script and Simone Signoret's great performance. Her continental air and sophistication create an antithesis with the mundane, English, small town setting.
The DVD package on the other hand is very poor. No extras whatsoever I'm confused as to why the dvd uses a menu and doesn't go straight to "play film". The only thing here is a chapter selection. No subtitles, not even in English. It's a shame because this film really is considered one of the best in British film history and some notes and "behind the scenes" facts would've been wonderful.
