5.0 out of 5 stars Just what is needed!, 14 May 2015

Grub screws have a real habit of going missing and when they do they're hellishly difficult to replace. I was about to throw out a perfectly serviceable towel rail, purely through the loss of a grub screw, when I came across this product. With a wide selection of different sizes, I was able to find just the one I needed and put the rail back into service. Job done and I still have 39 grub screws for future use! Great value for money and something I was unable to find anywhere else.

Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Matters in the End (Wellcome)
Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Matters in the End (Wellcome)
by Atul Gawande
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £11.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An enriching but difficult book, 14 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the great tradition of the wounded healer, Gawande utilises the dying and death of his own father to help illuminate the challenging issue of how we treat those approaching the end of their lives. His intelligent, well informed and sensitive approach to a subject that too often becomes 'the elephant in the room' is extremely illuminating. And his own medical background, and understanding of how doctors think, really helps to explain why the process of dying and death has become so highly medicalised and often insensitive to a wider and perhaps deeper perspectives of human need.
Old age, sickness and death were what the young Buddha saw all around him when he first ventured into the world. Despite developments in modern medicine these facets of the First Noble Truth remain an unavoidable consequence of life. Gawande's contemporary take on these, along with his reflections on how we might approach them in a more humane way, is a valuable contribution to the debate on how we might improve the way people experience the end of their lives.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 14 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is considerable light leakage from under the nose area of these masks. And although I accept that they are more comfortable and less sweaty to wear than the flatter, more conventional type I still found it disturbed my sleep to wear them all night.
For me, the ear plugs supplied with these masks were unusable. They are very firm and difficult to squeeze into a shape which allows them to be inserted and fitted in the ear.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cigar schmigar!, 7 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you want something that tastes anything like a cigar, forget this product! It may look like a cigar (from a distance) and produce satisfying clouds of white vapour but words fail me when it comes to describing the weird and unpleasant flavour. Super unrealistic in terms of tasting anything remotely like a cigar.
In view of the cracking reviews posted by most other customers, it leaves me wondering what else they may have been smoking
alongside this faux product. I'm off elsewhere to sample versions containing nicotine. I doubt they'll be much better, but they couldn't be worse.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor writing, clunky structure, 9 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
How this ever got shortlisted for the Mann Booker is beyond me. Poor writing, clunky structure, cardboard characters, preposterous storyline and vacuous philosophising. I often thought of abandoning it but kept thinking that there had to be some redeeming twist or resolution at the end. Imagine my disappointment ...

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding read, 30 Nov. 2013

A deeply moving meditation on what it is to be young and to be old, to survive through war and peace, and to both skim the surface of life and be touched by the profound. A beautifully written and constructed novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stonking good novel, 8 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Man on the Move (Paperback)
Otto de Kat is a writer who knows how to communicate the deepest elements of what it is to be human without an iota of verbiage. Prose poetry at its best, I do not understand why this author is not more widely known ... other than the fact that he is Dutch!
Man on the Move explores what it is to be 'a man', through the life of an individual crippled by his emotional alienation from others and his inability to embrace and properly articulate his feelings. It creates a powerful portrait of someone running from themselves and the relationships and situations which threaten to ensnare them. A short but panoramic and powerful story whose dark and pessimistic themes are infused by writing of the highest order.

5.0 out of 5 stars A miniature masterpiece, 8 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Julia (Paperback)
I had never heard of this author, prior to reading a tiny review in a Sunday newspaper. But I thank my lucky stars that I was led to this book, which is a delightful and deeply touching piece of writing. There are times when the prose soars into the realms of pure poetry. A very short novel, its brevity and simplicity conceal the power of its emotional impact. One of the most affecting love stories I have ever read, it touches on the deepest predicaments of passion, loss and and guilt. A word is not wasted in painting a touching picture of a doomed relationship which ignites against the backdrop of Nazi Germany and continues to reverberate through the decades that follow. A masterful and realistic account of what it is to be a man forever scarred by lost love.
I have recommended this book to a number of friends and am so enthusiastic about it that I wanted to do the same to Amazon readers. I am amazed that this is the first review of Julia that has been posted here but feel quite privileged to be the one to do it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read, 8 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Granite Rain (Kindle Edition)
These stories are written with a light and often quirky touch which entertains and engages. But beneath the apparent simplicity and easy-going style lurk twists and turns which echo the darker side of life and relationships. I look forward to hearing more from this author.
