This is an outstanding first novel. Covering a life's journey, it evocatively conveys the poisonous effects of Cal's complicity in an act of violent revenge, and his hopeless romanticism. The chapters set in an army training camp are particularly powerful. It's also a moving testimony to enduring love. It deserves to do well.

Ray Cluley is a wonderful writer. He manages to evoke worlds and mood without ever straining. These stories have a heart of mystery and more than a hint of subtle poetry. This collection will surely whet your appetite for more from one of Britain's finest fantasy writers.

A more than worthy successor to Hope Road, Barlow winds the tension and threat levels up in this violent and unpredictable sequel.

The power of hate, the power of family history, the power of no-hands-barred covering of tracks, and, indeed, the risky power of love - it's all there in a beautifully-paced crime/thriller that grabs you from the start and surprises to the end.

Invest in Barlow now. He's going to be very big.

More, please, John!

John Barlow is an excellent writer with a penchant for the bizarre. He's explored a man who ate chairs, the Rhubarb Triangle in Yorkshire, and the experience of travelling around Spain - where he lives - attempting to eat every part of the pig.

So I was interested to see what his take on a crime novel would be. As you might expect, this is no ordinary PC Plod story - he comes at it from a variety of angles, with a hero or anti-hero (take your pick) whose profile and history are far from conventional. All your early expectations will be turned upside down as it progresses. He even manages to get Spanish pig into it - which - if you think about it - is a police-like reference!

If you want a run-of-the-mill gumshoe whodunnit, don't bother. But if you want to read something devious and different I highly recommend Hope Road. I'm about to start the sequel with great anticipation.

This story of how, behind apparent ignorance and vulnerability, a strong intellect and courage may lie is very well written. Harry Duffin's long experience as a screenwriter makes for vivid visual imagery, and a cast of strong characters, each well-defined and placed in this Jazz-age narrative, gives us an absorbing reading experience.

At times exciting, at times tender, at times shocking, it's also a great love story. For while you will think that we don't see enough of May's internal thoughts, but stick around - she's one hell of a woman.

A terrifying account of myriad narrow escapes from disaster. We are indeed fortunate to be alive today. And not by good judgment!

Excellent series - dark and rooted in reality. The Scandinavian TV industry's renaissance continues.

Based on, but not slaved to real events these episodes are gripping and very acted and directed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks from a writer, 10 Jan. 2012

I wrote episode 11 on the DVD ("I'm a believer"). It's very pleasing that so many people have posted such positive comments about the series.

After that episode was shown I had a huge number of letters from people whose children had been more or less abducted by sects like the Moonies, and somehow seeing it in a drama context helped them to feel that they were right in trying to prise their loved ones out of the grip of some nasty mind-controlling people.

If what I was told at the time is true, there were no more series because Trevor Eve didn't want to become type-cast in the role. Similar things happened with "Hazell", which I also wrote for.

I'm sure I can say on behalf of all the writers and Bob Banks-Stewart, who created produced it, that we did our best to make something good. We also wish that TV was as adventurous now as it was then. So thanks for watching. You're probably not aware that I haven't seen it since it was first broadcast! The fact that the episodes exist at all is a miracle - the BBC threw some very significant plays into a skip.

1.0 out of 5 stars Travesty, 18 July 2011
Any relationship between this and the "real" Dungeon Siege games is entirely in the misleading title. Having thoroughly enjoyed the series so far, this is a major travesty. It's a console game with a very bad PC implementation. The control system is awful, the screen zoom is precisely TWO settings, the targeting locks and remains locked to things you don't want to shoot. I could go on.

Don't buy it. It's dreadful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Space wars, 5 Jun. 2011
I've been reading this book against the real-world backdrop of people across North Africa and the Middle East rising up bravely in the face of unscrupulous dictatorships, and there are strange resonances in this space epic as the forces of democracy fight an apparently losing battle against the ZO - the dynastic empire that desires to control everything by any means. If, as I think it is, this is a first novel, it shows an impressive control of plot development, and it's well-written. The title derives from a hidden twist, which I'm not going to spoil here, that adds another dimension the battle for survival.

It's one of those books which accelerates its pace as you get deeper into it. The space battles are particularly well done, with some imaginative tactical thinking. I suspect there may be a sequel on the drawing board. I would have given it five stars if the ZO dictator had been slightly less over the top - but when I look at the news, maybe it comes with the job.

If you like a good old space epic, this one hits the spot. Recommended.
