5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average birth guide, 5 Jun. 2017
This book covers all of the usual things you might expect to find in a book for expectant mothers and their supporters, and so much more! The content is underpinned by Milli's "steel beams" of birth: that you have a choice; and that you have human rights in childbirth. Milli shows women how they can use these beams to have a birth experience that they can feel positive about, whatever happens. The book is packed with real life stories that make the facts relatable, resources for when you might like to look further, and useful tools for planning your own birth. The illustrations by Kate Evans are both beautiful and functional. I usually recommend that every expectant mother reads Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, but from now on I will be recommending this!

One More Tomorrow

3.0 out of 5 stars A challenging short story, 29 May 2017
This review is from: One More Tomorrow (Kindle Edition)
Another heartwrenching short story by this author. Exploring emotional and ethical issues in the style of an English Jodi Picoult. It's a bold approach to have an unlikable central character, and there is no redeeming happy ending, but a gripping story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilariously serious, 1 May 2017

While I didn't agree with everything in the book, Sara's discussion of the biological and ethical history of women's bodies (among other things) is well researched and well written. It is difficult to marry (little pun) the biology and ethics of sex and gender, and Sara does so beautifully. If you like feminist comedy you will enjoy this book.

Breastfeeding Uncovered: Who Really Decides How We Feed Our Babies?
Breastfeeding Uncovered: Who Really Decides How We Feed Our Babies?
by Dr. Amy Brown
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.37

5.0 out of 5 stars A manifesto for a breastfeeding friendly society, 14 Mar. 2017
This is not a book about the benefits of breastfeeding: those are widely extolled. Dr Brown instead engages with why women make the choices they do concerning whether and how long to breastfeed. This book can benefit both those who already support breastfeeding, by helping them to understand why women make the choices they do, and those who can help to make our wider society more conducive to higher rates and longer durations of breastfeeding.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a good range of activities with enough variation to keep him ..., 24 Feb. 2017
This book is a step up from activity books we have tried before. Our six year old is a strong reader, and this was well suited to his ability and comprehension. There is a good range of activities with enough variation to keep him entertained for a good while, and the content is interesting and child friendly.

This is a book about a lovely subject, but has very little content and mostly advocates buying things you don't need to achieve hygge.

Why Human Rights in Childbirth Matter (Pinter & Martin Why It Matters: 9)
Why Human Rights in Childbirth Matter (Pinter & Martin Why It Matters: 9)
by Rebecca Schiller
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Key for understanding the issues of human rights in childbirth, 5 Oct. 2016
This book is a fantastic tool for knowing and supporting the human rights of women. As Schiller explains, pregnancy and childbirth are often a gateway to divorcing women from their human rights. This short book explains what the issues under contention are surrounding human rights in childbirth, and gives real life examples of how women's rights are violated. She also provides us with the language and legal framework for appealing against these rights abuses and preventing them in the future. The second half of the book provides a broken down explanation of what a woman's rights are and where she can look for help, so the book is both theoretical and practical. Another brilliant work in the "why it matters" series, and one I think everyone involved with women at this vulnerable time in their lives should read.

Mini Knitted Ocean: Woolly Whales, Dolphins and Other Nautical Knits
by Sachiyo Ishii
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of creative genius!, 24 Sept. 2016
I was delighted to receive this book, and my two little boys doubly so! They have requested that I knit "the whole of underwater," so it looks like I'll be busy for a while! The patterns are well written and very inventive, and the designs are just genius! I will definitely be looking to get more fo the similar books by this author. The woodland one is calling my name...

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful testament to the process of birth, 20 Sept. 2016
I was completely blown away by this book. When it first arrived I flicked through the photographs thinking I'd put it down and read it later, but one set of pictures quickly sucked me in and before I knew it I had read several of the birth stories. The format of the book is perfect, with each story told from the perspective of the midwife and mother, and often a birth partner, and accompanied by amazing photographs of the birth itself. The photographs are taken from the midwife's perspective, so might be a little more graphic than some might be expecting, but I thought they showed beautifully the power of a woman's body, and my children found them interesting and not upsetting. The births themselves take many forms, and include home and hospital births, vaginal and cesarean, water, breech, and twin births.

The Peaceful Pregnancy Colouring Book: Relaxing and nurturing illustrations for expectant mothers
The Peaceful Pregnancy Colouring Book: Relaxing and nurturing illustrations for expectant mothers
by Adelajda Kolodziejska
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely exercise for expectant mothers, and a great gift, 3 Sept. 2016
This book serves as a meditative reflection on growing and meeting your new baby. As I took the time to colour the pages I felt relaxed and focussed on my new baby, not easy to do when there are other children roaming around, and indeed they did get in one the colouring action too! This would make a lovely gift for an anxious or first time mother looking for such an exercise as part of their self care during pregnancy. The illustrations follow beautiful themes and are well thought out. I especially like the pages with spaces in the middle, which I plan to use to frame pregnancy and birth affirmations, but could also be used to frame sonograms or photographs as a keepsake.
