4.0 out of 5 stars Affordable substitute for Canon inks, 21 July 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Far more affordable than replacement cartridges from Canon and 100% compatible with the relevant printers, these cartridges also produce decent text and images. My only slight grumble would be over the slight lack of clarity in what gets peeled off each cartridge before it can be installed -- I did nearly break one when installing. But if you take your time and make sure you understand the instructions before proceeding, you should be fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and entertaining look at ideas that changed our world -- some will surprise you!, 21 July 2017
Lists of things are en vogue at the moment -- indeed, the sort that appear on popular news websites even have their own portmanteau, the "listicle". But Harford's latest book, offering a papery version of his excellent radio series for the BBC World Service, is not only of rather more intellectual heft than "Seven Ways to Eat a Burrito that Every Twentysomething Needs" but actually quite a bit more fun, too.

As usual in his writing, Harford offers a compelling blend of information, analysis and wit, on this occasion sharing the stories behind some of history's most important inventions, innovations and ideas. A number of them, such as the light bulb, are obvious candidates, but how many of us have stopped to think about the significance of the Billy bookcase or how compiling computer programs has changed the world? It turns out they're thoughts worth having.

Harford's main focus through each chapter is on the economic impact one innovation has made, but each tale is woven so deftly that the broader impact on society is readily apparent. The compartmentalised format allows the reader to dip in and out easily, making for a pleasingly accessible book. And the fact it's funny, even charming in places, helps with the enjoyment too. If you're interested in the cornerstones of our economy today, look no further.

3M Duct Tape, 50 mm x 50 m
3M Duct Tape, 50 mm x 50 m
Price: £2.76

4.0 out of 5 stars durable and easy to tear off the reel, 19 July 2017
It's not the cheapest duct/gaffer tape, but I've resorted to buying the 3M variant online because it ticks all the boxes I need it to: strong, durable and easy to tear off the reel. The brands I most often see in shops these days, Duck and Unibond, together with store own-brands, all fail on at least one of these. 3M tape stays in place, and crucially, I can use it without needing a pair of scissors, as there are times in my household when a quick repair is essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine help for youngsters to calm emotions and solve problems in a friendly package, 19 July 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While it took my autistic son a couple of frustrated hours to 'unlock' the various modes this app offers, he now really enjoys it -- and it genuinely does help him to calm down on occasion. The voice acting is clear and friendly, and you can't really argue with the price! Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible value if you don't mind a few compromises, 19 July 2017
The good, first of all: the hardware is effective, pleasant to wear, light on the wrist and water resistant The heart rate monitor and pedometer are both accurate, and I love the built-in phone finder function when the watch is bluetoothed to the handset. It's easy to remove from the strap, customisable, simple to charge and offers a couple of other nifty features besides. The 'turn on screen when I raise my wrist' detection is at least as good as a Fitbit's. And my goodness does it offer good value compared to nearly all the opposition.

Now the bad: the Letscomm app is mediocre at best, offering few measurements, and often fails to connect to the watch over bluetooth even when the phone is right next to it. The strap clasp can be a little uncomfortable after long periods of leaning one's arm on a desk while typing, and the screen brightness is very low. It's almost impossible to read the display in bright sunlight, even when shading one's wrist, so it's probably not a good choice for daytime joggers or walkers.

Finally, the ugly: as far as I can tell, the face/screen has no scratch resistant coating, perhaps to be expected for its very competitive price, but it does mean that I have two clearly visible marks on a device only a month old. But if you can put up with the niggles, you won't find more smart band features for less money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for phones kept in bag, poor for those kept in a pocket, 4 Feb. 2017
The case fits the phone very well, is slim and feels good to hold in the hand. Unfortunately, it's pretty hopeless if you keep your phone in a trouser or jeans pocket, because the part of the case covering the top left corner of the phone (as you look at the screen) only connects to the rest of the case at the back. This effectively makes it a hook that catches on the top of the pocket whenever the phone is taken out, which is annoying. And because the material the case is made from isn't flexible, it will eventually snap off. My new case lost that corner within three weeks, leaving the phone at risk of damage if dropped on that corner. Unless you only ever keep your handset in a bag, S-wave cases are a better choice, I'd say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent-value mid-range CPU/cooler with compromises of 125W consumption and older architecture, 30 Jan. 2017
The FX 8350 offers similar levels of performance to recent Core i5 processors (albeit with different strengths and weaknesses due to the higher number of CPU cores and older architecture). However, it does that in a package that's considerably cheaper than its Intel competitors, and with the useful addition of one of the best stock coolers available. The trade-off for this excellent value is high power consumption (with consequent heat generation) and lack of future-proof motherboard, as the AM3+ standard is due for replacement shortly.

The Wraith cooler does at least address the heat issue, and as its name suggests, does so quietly -- when the 8350 is running at its usual clock speed, the Wraith is near silent at idle and doesn't wind up too much even under load. It's questionable whether the Wraith is beefy enough for a great deal of overclocking, but unlike many third-party tower coolers, it sits parallel to the CPU and so moves air across motherboard heatsinks, some of which can get pretty toasty on AM3+ architecture. If you don't have a side fan in your case, that makes a Wraith all the more appealing.

Messy: How to Be Creative and Resilient in a Tidy-Minded World
Messy: How to Be Creative and Resilient in a Tidy-Minded World

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and entertaining look at why some mess can be a good thing, 30 Oct. 2016
I never set out to make my desk and the space around it untidy, but they always seems to end up that way. In the past, I felt this reflected poorly on me; however, as Tim Harford points out in this enlightening and entertaining book (a description that should come as no surprise to those familiar with his writing), being a little messy can have its advantages.

Harford examines different types of 'messiness' and the advantages they can bring, from the way teams operate in the workplace through Second World War tank warfare and the electronics industry to aircraft safety and jazz and rock music. Such diverse case studies allow Harford to form a convincing argument that too much order and structure can limit the ability of a system to recover from unexpected events or innovate in ways that might prevent their negative effects.

This book is not a love letter to chaos, as Harford is clear that a certain amount of organisation has obvious benefits too. But it does serve as a useful reminder that we can afford to be a little chaotic sometimes -- and as a good read, to boot.

Selections GFA805 Solar Powered Battery Operated Ultrasonic Cat Repeller (Batteries Included)
Selections GFA805 Solar Powered Battery Operated Ultrasonic Cat Repeller (Batteries Included)
Offered by Garden Selections
Price: £14.19

3.0 out of 5 stars Functional, but not fully effective at keeping cats away, 30 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The integral stake keeps the device where you put it, and the solar cell maintains its power through all but the dullest of weather. It's certainly sensitive enough on some settings to pick up people as well as smaller animals -- but despite trying several of the settings, it wasn't, unfortunately, able to keep cats out of our fairly small garden.

Monday Night Football Theme ("Heavy Action")
Monday Night Football Theme ("Heavy Action")

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, upbeat piece of music with nostalgia value, 30 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Familiar not only to US residents as the theme to Monday Night Football, Heavy Action was also the opening music for Superstars, the 1980s sports celebrity gameshow. It therefore has considerable value in terms of nostalgia, but that shouldn't detract from the fact that it is also a great, upbeat piece of orchestral music that can be enjoyed in its own right. It's a personal favourite.
