Man On Fire [2004] [DVD]
Man On Fire [2004] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Denzel Washington
Offered by DVDBayFBA
Price: £3.24

5.0 out of 5 stars We lose everything, 18 May 2013
This review is from: Man On Fire [2004] [DVD] (DVD)
Like Tony Scott's Deja Vu, another Denzel Washington tour de force, a movie of loss of innocence, loss of love, loss of morality and life as a simple spectacle of death. It has a simple message, we lose everything eventually, and if you lose belief in yourself, then give your life for another. A tough movie but I wonder what message Tony Scott was trying to send us so many years before he took his own life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Seems a sad life for such a great thinker, 11 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Einstein - A Biography (Hardcover)
I found this biography easy to read and follow. It tries to present Einstein in an objective light, but is lyrical and thoughtful. Without casting judgement the writer moves you to make your own judgement.

I feel only sadness when I hear of Einsteins private life and what happened to his wives and children. In that sense he was as ordinary as the rest of us, and perhaps more tragic.

I feel only total exhilaration and excitement when I read how he came about the theory of relativity which surely is the most awesome thought man has ever had? Tough competition from Darwin on Evolution I think and of course Watson and Crick with DNA.

He let his religious and philosophical prejudices cloud his scientific judgement sometimes, but relativity opened up cosmology (how was the universe created) which allowed science to move into an area dominated by religion and myths. He would have smiled I think when the Supernova teams under Perlmutter and Schmidt discovered our universe is accelerating its expansion.

The writer mixes the chapters so that you follow his life as his ideas develop. As a biography and style of writing throughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars What music was meant to do, 11 May 2013
This review is from: Unknown Pleasures (Audio CD)
Imagine what it must be like to live in a world awash with puerile, facile, meaningless music? Imagine what it must be like to listen to hundreds of tracks which sound like they were written by nightclub owners, inexperienced teenagers, all feeding an industry bereft of heart, soul or passion that spits it back out through every possible channel or outlet? It must be hell.

Imagine a writer and a band that somehow from the most unlikely place on earth concoct music that washes away the pollution and speaks a truthful lyric? If singing what you feel no matter how painful, unpalatable with the era you live in, unbearable to your friends is the price you pay, then Joy Division paid that price for those of us willing to listen.

That Martin Hannet went down a soundscape that was the total opposite of what every other producer was doing when he helped make this album should not possible. That Peter, Bernard and Steven , 3 unlikely lads from Manchester made a deeply disturbing sound of rocknroll, and that we were lucky enough to hear the words of a man who brought his fears and wishes to life is for me a personal miracle.

Even in a quantum world which says everything is possible, this artefact is completely impossible. I love it and will always listen to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 4 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really didn't want to watch this on a flight, the written blurb looked ok but not compelling, but I was hooked right to the end. All of life is here and unlike Lars Von Triers Melancholia it really does span the richness of life, joy and sadness. It says what we already know in our hearts, that there is no god, that between all the beauty of human life and the sordid, terrible evil of many human beings that we are alone in the universe and yet connected by the bravery or cowardice of our individual actions. Thank you Mr Mitchell, Wachowski's et al.

1.0 out of 5 stars 1 star max pleeeeez!, 4 May 2013
This review is from: Aeon Flux The Movie [DVD] (DVD)
Watched it a second time just to make sure, but no, this is a very inconsequential movie (most are I guess) but as someone who likes futuristic cinema I had to comment. Charlize Theron is miscast, in that just like her role in Prometheus she just can't bring it to life no matter how good her technique is: Stuck somewhere in the mediocre middle between Mila J in Resident Evil and the phenomenal but attractive intelligence of Naomi Watts, M. Theron is lost in what starts out to be a cool cool future world and then loses itself in hokum. A brave try but sadly didn't work for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, depicts the stifling futility of Eton, 28 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Another Country [DVD] (DVD)
just WHAT is that school all about? Eton here feels like a nightmarish place and the camera presents a scene of idyllic beauty against the futility of boys playing out the same roles generation after stifling generation. Perhaps a reason why betrayal was in the air, but the whole communist drama back then we know was such a major part of political life and espionage ((but surely ultimately futile just like the principles espoused by Eton))

When the main character is asked if there is anything he misses about England, his family, his class, he merely says "I miss the cricket". Says it all.

But the director, Colin Firth and Rupert Everett are grand, and I was certainly hooked on Mr Firth from this, his first movie and onwards. So odd that I like this movie, probably because of the 2 rebels fighting against a fixed destiny.

A rare find, the music for this movie, Nyman's score is simply a heart-rending joy fitting the tragic grandeur of characters doomed to a fixed destiny but trying to find a way out of it, please do watch the movie again and then listen to this complete score. Stunning.

3.0 out of 5 stars perfectly adequate, 28 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
as i said perfectly adequate, no complaints whatso ever, a good hard-wearing case that will protect from scratches and knocks (though not much more), but i gave it a 3 as its .... boring, very boring, nevertheless if you are a staid, risk-averse-individual then its advantage is that nobody will give it a second glance. Shame it doesnt have a pocket for pieces of paper or business cards collected during conferences
