5.0 out of 5 stars A different Mahler?, 5 May 2008
Having been brought up in the "boom-crash" school of Mahler,I approached Bertini's set with some trepidation. What a wonderful surprise!Bertini's interpretation has been described as "Mediterranean",reflecting,I suppose,a brighter sunnier Mahler. This is correct. It is a gentler radiant sound with moderate tempi and delicately nuanced. The No 4 is the best I've heard. No hysteria!Yet drama is there when you need it.
Unlike another reviewer in another place I do not believe that you need to live in a detached house to enjoy Mahler's music. So much that is gossamer fine is lost in the gigantic cescendi.this is Mahler with compassion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bernstein at his best?, 15 April 2008
Sibelius' fans will have their own favourites among the numerous sets of his symphonies on the market.I personally enjoy Rattle's recordings, tho'they somehow lack a "nordic"feel to them.Ashkenazy comes second.I am not a fan of Colin Davis and I find Paavo Berglund's set on E.M.I somewhat anemic. But Bernstein is a joy!He returns the music to Scandinavia, giving it a feel of granite, rough hewn under polar skies. The romantic grandeur of the music has never been better expressed. The New York Philharmonic is in great form, and the sony engineers have surpassed themseves with the digital transfer. There is a slight background noise and one or two clicks, thats all! This is Sibelius -and Bernstein-at their best.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets!, 4 Nov. 2007
This will be a very brief review as the previous reviewer appears to have covered all the bases.Suffice to say that as an admirer of the Schubert symphonies I found this recording to be outstanding in its interpretation, playing and recording quality.I purchased the C.D on the basis of the previous review and was not disappointed.Absolutely magical!
