2.0 out of 5 stars sick twisted piece of bodily carnage, 19 Nov. 2007
Its fair to say i knew what to expect when watching this film, but the first 40 minutes or so is dull. Backpackers indulging in sexual excess then getting drawn into a sick practice of people being tortured and paying for the priviledge.

As for the backpackers they are shallow but you can tell straight away which one of them will survive its that predictable. Jay hernandez looks like an actor with some potential if he had a better movie to act in,the only reason i gave this film 2 stars is because it delves into the human pysche and asks some disturbing questions.

Maybe thats what Eli Roth wanted but the whole thing is let down by wooden acting especially from the girls involved relying too much on the shock factor. I imagine a lot of people may be disgusted at this sort of film and my advice is to steer clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars thoroughly enjoyable action movie, 6 Nov. 2007
Bruce Willis slips effortlessly back into the McClane role in this
superb action movie. What i liked most was the banter between Justin Long and McClane its like they exist in different worlds, when Willis puts on the car stereo Long criticises his taste in music then for listening to the news as it is all manipulated propaganda according to Longs character.

Timothy Olyphant is good as the villian although he is no Alan Rickman but then who is, he is also backed up by some deadly sidekicks Maggie Q and one guy who is an expert in the art of freerunning. The script is not oscar material but their is enough suitable quips especially Olyphant referring to Bruce Willis as a timex watch in a digital age.

The stunt are fantastic especially with the fighter jet and good shootouts. And just like Casino Royale this is a welcome return to form for a dying franchise.

1.0 out of 5 stars recycled garbage, 2 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Black Christmas [DVD] (DVD)
The problem with this movie is that their is not one original
idea in it. The characters are annoying and most viewers may
find it hard to symphaphise with their plight, where are the
police when all this is going on ?

How Halloween has been copied time and again but never bettered,
the plot is uninteresting a killer freak with the worst parents
of all time. Why do movie makers keep making the same film that
relies on shock gore or torture porn to drive its message home.

Where is the tension, atmosphere or decent acting in movies such
as this and the sense of dread. This movie like others such as
hostel, paradise lost etc has none of this, and i feel angry at
wasting 90 mins watching this drivel.

4.0 out of 5 stars visual carnage, 16 Oct. 2007
Not read the graphic novel this is based on, but this is absolute carnage on a grand scale. The tale of 300 spartans fighting endless hordes of persians is brilliantly choreographed with a great visual style and heaps of gore.

Severed limbs and corpses litter the battlefield, the spartans look fantastic and the persians slightly pathetic although the entrance of king xerxes when meeting leonidas is impressive. Xerxes himself looks foreboding and tries to manipulate Leonidas and the spartans to help him with the persian cause. The story is all one way leading to the battle although their is some effort to flesh out the characters a little.

The era it is set in 480bc was brutal and human life meant little to personal gain and glory. Its clear with this film the days of Benhur are gone forever, we now have a new style of historical epic. A new take on history that showed the scant regard the persians and spartans held for each other, all shown in all its visual visceral and bloody glory.

5.0 out of 5 stars superbly acted drama, 4 Jun. 2007
If you ever wanted to know about the brutal reality of selling then watch this movie. With a superb script and acting we are treated to a savage take on the competitive world of selling and making money.
All actors deliver virtuso performances with a notable cameo from Alec Baldwin as an unforgiving boss, also the movie is mostly set in the office and this increases the tension as each actor argues with another.
Al Pacino is very good especially in the scene where Kevin Spacey messes up a sale.
Good support from the rest of the cast but Jack Lemmon stands out as a sympathetic but also callous salesman, i would have given this 4 stars but add one more star for Lemmons performance.
The language is crude but essential to the movie highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars boring noir thriller, 1 Jun. 2007
This review is from: The Black Dahlia [DVD] (DVD)
Josh Hartnett plays a detective investigating the murder of an actress, sounds simple well it isnt the plot is convuluted the film has a feel similar to chinatown or hollywoodland which are better movies.

Some people may like its old fashioned style and sets but i just found it incredibly boring somewhere in the middle the movie completely loses its way, was the murder being investigated or not.

Josh Hartnett and the rest of the cast are like eye candy with little substance to their characters, and Aaron Eckhart the most interesting character hardly features.

Hartnett affairs are boring and with no chemistry and by the end of the movie you will have forgotten about the murder or switched the movie off instead.

Its all just frustratingly slow and i wish Josh Hartnett would speak up i could barely hear him, as i mentioned before their are better thrillers such as la confidential around than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars poorly lit dull horror, 1 Jun. 2007
This review is from: Pulse [DVD] (DVD)
This dark so called horror about the undead invading the world through techno gadgets is ridiculous any anti technology message is lost in a confused plot.
The acting has to be mentioned as its so dull and the characters are so annoying by the end you will want everybody dead.
The motives for these ghosts are never explained they kill everybody so fast the viewer will not know what is going on.
This film is also the darkest movie in the history of cinema their is hardly a light anywhere, would someone please switch a light on.
The cast are wooden Kristen Bell walks around looking confused her friends christina milian especially are incredibly annoying.
This film is not scary the undead are surrounded in darkness in a pathetic attempt to increase tension.
2 stars for the effort and i am being generous, but their are far superior horrors out their such as Saw, Dawn of the dead, also the shining that better recreate the tension sorely lacking in this weak effort.

3.0 out of 5 stars mindless guns and mayhem, 25 May 2007
This review is from: Smokin' Aces [DVD] (DVD)
Buddy Israel played by Jeremy Piven is hiding in a las vegas hotel after grassing on the cosa nostra, while a host of unsavoury characters are contracted to kill him.
The plot is simple enough but its all explained so quickly with little character developement.
Alicia Keys is miscast as a female assassin however you portray her, while Andy Garcia looks bored also Ray Lliota is wasted.
Ryan Reynolds stands out for me as the fbi agent with morals, the action is confused with gunfire in all directions.
Subtle hints of racial stereotypes with the neo nazis, black gangstas and so on.
One of the contract killers takes an age attempting to kill his target and i wonder how he even got to be a contract killer in the first place.
Despite the misgivings its not a bad film, i just get the feeling its been done before only better.

4.0 out of 5 stars fascinating but historically slightly inaccurate, 8 Mar. 2007
Hollywood has long taken liberties with movies from history, and often it has not mattered when it comes to entertainment. Gladiator is another example i remember first watching this film in the cinema and was impressed by the grandiose sets and fight scenes.

On reflection having watched it again on dvd i have to say the inaccuracies are there. I have taken an interest in roman history and Commudus had golden hair or blonde and was worse than Phoenixs interpretation, he did not die in an arena but he was betrayed he also had a harem of boys and girls though i cant see Ridley Scott having this in his film.

As for the movie itself Russell Crowe was good but hardly warranted an oscar, would he really have been tough enough in those times to lead a roman army. The initial battle scene is very good and powerful with lengthy fight scenes and marching roman formations. Much detail has gone into the battle and the viewer will be impressed by this scene in particular.

The sets for the collisseum were impressive especially the fight with the tigers. But this is the collisseum and far worse atrocities were committed within its walls, as exemplified by the christians being fed to lions being edited out. Ridley Scott deserves some praise for reinventing the sword and sandals epics with added realism and gore. The collisseum with the use of cgi and sets looks stunning, and gives you an idea of what a wonderful achievement in architecture it was.

Joaquin Phoenix was a wicked emperor, but emperors in those days did far worse. He has a slyness about him, shifty not someone you can trust and always looking to exploit a situation for his own political gain. This was the breakthrough for Phoenix after the unfortunate demise of his talented brother and shows how acting talent runs in the family.

But to me most of the other acting was irrelevant it was about Phoenix vs Crowe. Richard Harris was not in the film long enough to leave a lasting impact, he played aurelius with some authority although Marcus Aurelius was'nt the saint this film would have you believe.

Oliver Reeds role was very good shame it was his last film. The directing was good along with sets and fighting but dont expect a totally realistic period of roman history. What we are left with is a revenge story as the plot and a well told one. Also a mention for the haunting soundtrack at the end which i especially liked.

4.0 out of 5 stars shopping for zombies, 8 Mar. 2007
I liked this movie, because i found it unsettling as it deals with the isolation of the survivors and the complete breakdown of civilisation. Not everyone will like it as anarchy reigns with no one having an answer as to what caused the virus or how to deal with it. The virus is never explained and what it does to people is terrible.

Actors including Ving Rhames give decent performances with Jake Weber providing the voice of reason. Survivors squabble with each other and i wondered whether it would be better cooperating given the situation, but this probably shows the desperation they are facing.

Survivors find solace in a shopping mall trying to make sense of the anarchy, while the world outside descends into chaos. And of course their is a brief attack on consumerism as in the first movie. A decent remake that provides good direction, gore plenty of zombies and tension.
