5.0 out of 5 stars Shirley Horn - The Main Ingredient, 18 Feb. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Main Ingredient (Audio CD)
Shirley Horn invited some of her favourite jazz performers to record this album in her home (inc Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, Joe Henderson). She says in the notes that The Main Ingrediant is the music but I have to disagree. Shirley Horn is The Main Ingrediant as she is on all of her albums. What a distinctive voice, beautiful phrasing - and she can swing with the best in her sultry way. She is sorely missed but we are lucky to be able to witness some of her live performances on YouTube and of course, just buy any of her albums - especially those where she accompanies herself on the piano. Wonderful wonderful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Jimmy Smith 1964, 16 Feb. 2008
This review is from: The Cat (Audio CD)
This is a brilliant album and a must for any lover of Jimmy Smith's groovy Hammond sounds. Lalo Schifrin is the musical director of a top class big band and Jimmy just shines in front of them. The title track comes from the classic French movie Joy Time which stars Alain Delon and Jane Fonda. If you love that real sixties feel then just buy this and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - Classic Dianne Reeves with all star line up, 16 Jan. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Grand Encounter (Audio CD)
This is a must for both fans of Dianne Reeves and anybody who appreciates top rate jazz vocals and musicianship. Dianne is on tip top form and this album is of the highest order. The musicians are top quality and include jazz masters like Clark Terry,Harry Sweets Edison, Toots Thielemans, James Moody, Kenny Barron and more. There is a lovely duet with Joe Williams on Tenderly (think Sara and Billy), a swinging vocal arrangement on Ha (think Ross, Lambert & Hendricks) and a real foot tapping duet with Germaine Bazzle on Side by Side (think Carmen and Betty). I really can't recommend this album enough - buy it and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Best Kept Secret ......, 19 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Slow Down (Audio CD)
Liane Carroll - she is just a class act - great blues pianist and a voice thats at home with anything from Laura Nyro to Ellington to Bessie Smith and everything in between. If you get a chance to see Liane live, you will be in for a great evening. The songs on this album are very personal to Liane and her performance reflects this.....buy this...enjoy it and then treat yourselves to the rest of her catalogue if you haven't already.

....the album that Beverley Knight has been threatening to make for a long time - she proves here that she can hold her own with and in most cases top any classic American soul singers. I really admire BK for not going along with all the other R&B wannabees or singers in their 30's plus who feel the only way forward is middle of the road smooth bland slush. I hope this album gets some good airplay - people will see that BK is a performer to be reckoned with. A few years ago I went to a Courtney Pine concert at the RFH and Beverley guested - she blew us all away with her great voice and choice of material. This latest album is a great selection of songs - new and old - her interpretation of Time is on my Side is pure classic - Fantastic!!!!

Both discs are equally great. Some of the best roots tunes from the seventies - full of 12" discomixes. Lovely to hear Johnny Clarke's Babylon Yard straight after Jacob's Tenement. Classic cuts to be played loud - enjoy!

You will not be able to stop playing this album - the songs stay in your head for days. Clever, moving lyrics with great musical arrangements. Although some of the lyrics are quite dark this is not a miserable record. In fact I found myself smiling at some of Neko's words and just nodding my head in agreement. A great talent and a great album - check her out live!

If you like your jazz finger-snappin' exciting and of the highest quality of musicianship then buy this album now! Worth it for Mingus' interpretation of Moanin' alone. You can hear the musicians calling out when the music moves them -just Brilliant!!!!

....and I just can't get bored with it. An exellent album from Paul Weller. As usual an eclectic range of excellent songs from a very underrated performer. This man has got soul. He can get you rocking along with him one moment and then touch you with the sincerity of a wonderful ballad. He displays how he is influenced by many types of music - rock, soul, dub reggae, mod. Buy and enjoy for years.

This is a superb album. I bought my vinyl copy when it was released mid 70's and still play it today. This music is timeless. Classic Curtis Mayfield - a must buy.
