A Primate's Memoir: Love, Death and Baboons in East Africa
A Primate's Memoir: Love, Death and Baboons in East Africa

5.0 out of 5 stars putting your heart into your work, 29 Aug. 2002
Which is exactly what the author has done over his long career studying baboons. Starting with his early reasons for fascination with our close primate relatives, and narrowing down onto the particular baboon troop he studied, Robert Sapolsky has described with love and fervour the individuals he met, both human and baboon, during his stays in Africa. The lives of 'his' families, their relationships with each other (and occasionally with him), their trials and triumphs, and, finally, their destruction as a group through the carelessness and cupidity of their human neighbours, are all described with passion and outrage and fascination. A book to read and lend to as many people as possible!

5.0 out of 5 stars stitching together the story of the past, 29 Aug. 2002
Jennifer Chiaverini has written the best Elm Creek book yet. Sylvia's journey into her family's Civil War past throws light on her own future with Andrew - proving that we can learn from history after all. The story of Joanna, a slave escaping from the South, and the immigrant German family who reluctantly take her in is told in journal extracts. Sylvia and her quilter friends try to establish the truth of what exactly did take place in that prelude to the Civil War, as the journal tells a story of betrayal and a community torn apart by politics and conscience. The final remarkable act of courage and atonement finds an echo in Sylvia's decision for her future.

5.0 out of 5 stars From ballads to songs of outrage and injustice, 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: Hand Hewn (Audio CD)
I loved the version of Willie Brennan - very like the folk version I first heard in folk clubs in the sixties, but here with brilliant musicians as well as the story! Black Lung (with Hazel Dickens) is a cry against injustice in industry that's sadly as true now as when it was written. This is a band that can deliver both the old and the new, the outraged and the lyrical, the lament, and the triumph over adversity, and deliver them with real feeling. Their voices and their musical skill are beautifully balanced. Go and get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartaches and joys, 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: Just for the Record (Audio CD)
More heartaches than joys in these songs, but the stories they tell are from real experience of living. Superbly sung and played, every track is just the right balance of voices and instruments. Listen to Unwed Fathers for a different slant on an old, old story. This band play as though they've lived every word themselves, as if their lives depended on it - a 'must-have' for any lover of real songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart and soul singing, 29 Jun. 2002
This was my first encounter with the Dry Branch Fire Squad, and it convinced me to chase up their other recordings. From the title track on, every song earns its place, and every one is a real 'stop what you're doing and listen to this' experience.
I wouldn't change one track on this CD, and couldn't wait to go out and get more, more, more! They sing and play with more feeling than any other bluegrass band I've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth every step of the journey!, 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: Long Journey (Audio CD)
Long Journey has some wonderful songs on it - and, as usual from this band, the music is superb. I'd Rather be the Girl you Left Behind you is my personal favourite, but it's a close run thing.
Every track is great, and the different types of song and tune hold the attention - I kept stopping what I was doing to listen more closely! Another gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music with real feeling, 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: Tried & True (Audio CD)
Go from the rage and despair of Aragon Mill, with its tale of wasted lives in workless towns, to the gentleness and the sympathy in She's more to be pitied, a story of a girl gone wrong: every song on this CD deals in real emotion and real life.
The musicians play with enthusiasm and true skill, and the voices fit every song just right. Another brilliant Dry Branch Fire Squad CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Real shout for joy music, 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: Live! At Last (Audio CD)
The most alive "live" CD I've ever heard! The tall stories alone are worth buying it for - even on 10th hearing, I'm still laughing. The songs are real magic, harmonies that ring in your ears long after the song is over, music played with spirit and enthusiasm and feeling. Buy it if you like music with life and soul - then buy all their other recordings!

This One and Magic Life: A Novel of a Southern Family

5.0 out of 5 stars Dying with grace and serenity, 6 Jun. 2002
A lyrical and beautiful story of a painter's life and death. In it, a mystery is slowly explained, lives are examined with honesty and compassion, and choices are made which will reverberate into the future. The switching back and forward in time never loses the thread of the story, and all the characters are treated with sympathy as well as frankness.
The family have secrets from outsiders, and secrets from each other; their prejudices and assumptions are brought into the open by death and the necessary funeral arrangements.
A moving and beautiful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The war between the states claims another victim, 6 Jun. 2002
O the perils of re-enactment pageants! Passions overflow at the annual pea museum festival, and someone uses more than a pea-shooter on the museum director.
Jane is a volunteer who gets more than she bargained for, having to unravel why the long-lost hybrid pea should be suddenly so interesting to museum visitors and benefactors.
Surprising twists in the plot and characters keep up the interest. This is my favourite Jane Jeffry mystery (and infinitely more fun than War and Peace)
