Loved this on the telly. Came into it about half way through series two so bought this set to catch up.

This review is from: The Midnight Rose (Kindle Edition)
I really enjoyed the sections set in India and the early sections in England but the modern day England bit was quite silly and not very well done. A real shame as the main tale was well told.

3.0 out of 5 stars this was an incredibly stupid thing to do, 27 Mar. 2015

Only in as far as there was a lot of reading for the money but it was really spoiled for me by the fact that what happens in the future is given at the end of each of the first two parts. If the author intended to write a trilogy, this was an incredibly stupid thing to do. Even if she had written the first part as a standalone and then decided to write more, it was astounding to see such a big spoiler at the end of part two as well.

What a load of badly written tosh. It's a long time since I've read anything as dire as this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best one. Stilted and awkward, 27 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The connections between Alice's notebook and the modern day baddy was not believable. I had little sympathy with either the historical plot or the modern day one. Would have preferred his client to have been present to receive the explanation of the mystery of Alice. The hiccup in Tayte's love life was awkwardly handled. I enjoyed finding out about the sinking of the Empress of Ireland as I had never heard of it before but there was too much padding to make the rest of it worthwhile.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 27 Mar. 2015

Whilst it was interesting to read a bit more of the early part of John Shakespeare's spying career, this wasn't the best of the stories and I didn't learn much. It was a bit disjointed and I wasn't drawn in to his family and their troubles as much as I'd like to have been. The plot and subplots were all rather thin and a bit boring. Even the main characters of John and his servant Boltfoot Cooper were flat and Topcillfe's evil cruelty didn't sit right either. His nature wasn't really developed or properly explained - he was really just the same as he appears in stories that come later in time. The subplot of the innkeeper's daughter was a bit pointless. I was left with feeling that Mr Clements was taking a rest and published this just for the sake of it, pinching a bit here and bit there from his principal characters' previous outings. That's just lazy.

I like stories from this period but this is rubbish. Very amateurish, badly driven plot and stuffed full of Americanisms. Won't be trying any more of this series

Keeps the charge for a bit longer than the original Samsung battery but takes forever to charge up, hours and hours. Would have expected better performance for the price.

The second outing for Thoroughgood and Hardie. A fast paced tale but the plot is a bit obvious. The baddies get their just desserts as expected but Vanessa Velvet is a pain in the butt. She should have been quietly left behind at the end of the story but regrettably she's back in part three as a filler. The banter between the two cops is up to the mark again.

1.0 out of 5 stars this was boring and longwinded and overly sentimental, 3 July 2014

Sorry, but even allowing for the stilted mode of speech of the time, this was boring and longwinded and overly sentimental. A worse sin however was that it seriously needed the attention of a good proof reader.
