Battlefield Bombers Deep Sea Attack
Battlefield Bombers Deep Sea Attack
by Martin W. Bowman
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven account of bravery and skill, 19 Oct. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a well researched book and there is an interesting story being told. But what this book seems to have lacked is an editor - there is quite a bit of dittography, some odd formatting and slipping between past and present tenses that distracts from the narrative. It's worth reading but not at the £25 RRP as the publisher just didn't show enough care to the finished product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surround sound treat, 23 Jan. 2017

This review is from: Return To Ommadawn (Audio CD)
Others have commented eloquently on this album which does mark a pleasing return to Mike's multi-instrumentalist origins. This edition containing the 5.1 DVD is well worth getting as it really does show his musical skill to its fullest extent by separating the instruments out in a way that conventional stereo does not achieve. You have 3 sound options on the DVD- DTS, Dolby Digital and 24/48 LPCM stereo. The latter option is worth listening to for a better sound than CD but for surround sound, the DTS is the only option that does the music justice. Mike has done a great job on the surround- the only puzzle is why he did not use 24/96 DTS at a bare minimum as this would have done the album greater justice. Ommadawn is a great album - this is a very good album and in his long career to have produced only one dispensable album, Voyager, is a real achievement. His politics and views have provoked recent controversy (and I can't agree with them) but he produces lovely music, which is the most important thing about this talented man. A must buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Honesty about product and better instructions would help...., 12 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As other buyers have observed, cut outs are on the wrong side so it means it does not align with the camera etc. Better instructions would point out this out - customer service borderline rude. We will see if this lasts but being dismissive to a customer's reasonable enquiry is not good enough really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it!, 8 Jun. 2015

There's not much to add to the eloquent reviewers who have gone before, other than to say if you've enjoyed the first two novels in this series then it's guaranteed you'll be turning the pages at a rate of knots on this story. Bale continues his ascendancy to become the heir apparent to Iain M. Banks....

5.0 out of 5 stars No second album syndrome here!, 10 Nov. 2014
Well, inevitably, as this is a Lucas Bale book,it’s a page turner. That rule was established with the Heretic, the first book in the Beyond The Wall Series.
Without disclosing the plot, this is the tale of the hunter and the hunted. The motives of both seem questionable to begin with and yet weaved into the background of a society that is recognisable and alienating similtaneously.
The whole book has the word play of Will Self, the visceral violence of Neil Cross and the epic sweep of Iain Banks- that’s quite a combination, but Bale manages to combine those elements and takes the reader on a roller coaster of tension which you don't want to stop. Really going find it hard to wait for the next one....

5.0 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost - but will it be regained?, 6 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This fine novel pulls you in from the well picked Milton quote onwards. Bale writes evocatively, with characters that are sympathetic and a plot that twists and turns as skillfully as the starship Soteria. There is a well developed world view here, with an attention to detail that stretches from credible theology to respect for physics, even to the extent of an FTL method which has recognisable antecedents but is still fresh and interesting. Fans of Firefly and Iain M Banks will certainly find much to enjoy here. There are even rather line drawings of the Soteria at the rear of the book.
It ends as a good book should, leaving you wanting more(even the acknowledgements are more fun to read than the average)....let's hope the sequel is on its way soon!

These racks are a bargain compared to their nearest equivalents, the Muji storage units. Far more solid in their construction and when put against the Hygena DVD rack from Argos that offers less storage for nearly twice the price, well worth the purchase. Excellent packaging as well. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonic Showcase, 1 Jan. 2014
Not only does this recording live up to Linn's dedication to high quality sound, it also does it on two levels - as an SACD and as an HDCD. You do feel you're there with the Scottish ensemble.. recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it claims to be, 1 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a pretty good album but betrays Universal's continuing problems with accuracy and with blu-rays in particular. The PCM and TrueHD 5.1 mixes are 24/48 and the stereo mix is 24/96?! Odd as they claim 24/96 on the digipak. It sounds fine but when they go to the bother of pointing out the superiority of 24/96 over CD and claim the 5.1 mixes are 24/96, you do wonder why they don't then deliver. Recommended but unlike the Pure Audio discs (which may not have had a surround sound disc in their range yet but have excellent sound quality i.e. Velvet Underground & Nico in 24/192), perhaps not worth the current price being charged. The menu and package are well designed it has to be said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like being in the studio with the VU, 28 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
So the Velvet Underground & Nico blu ray audio disc (described on Amazon UK as blu spec dvd audio) is 24/192 PCM stereo (the DTS and Dolby options just add a bit more oomph) and it is merciless in its detail. Nico's voice is laid bare but then so are the fabulous chiming guitars at the heart of Venus In Furs. This does feel like being in the studio with them, glitches and all. Raw but in a good way. Unlike the rubbish 'menu'!
Excellent sound quality but they must making a fat profit off these Pure Audio discs, I agree with the previous reviewer re that. But it does sound better than the CD or the vinyl on a good system and if you want to feel like you are there with them, this is the one to go for. Weirdly the more slickly produced Supertramp Pure Audio Bluray Breakfast in America is 24/96 when it probably would have been more flattered by the higher resolution this disc offers. They are worth the money, as are SACDs, HDCDs, DVD-A's and all the other high resolution formats if you want to hear music undistorted (vinyl's failing quite often) and with true depth (CD can have that weakness).
Buy it!It is worth the money for that sound quality, which is why I have given it the full 5 stars.
