5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cymbal, 20 May 2017
This is a very good cymbal, I have four rides, all B20, a Sabian AAX 20", a UFIP, and two Istanbuls, an Agop Xist and this one. The Samatya is my go-to ride. I use the Xist for heavier music but for classic rock, garage, and indie, I'm loving this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strangely compulsive, 18 Dec. 2016

Four stars seems a tad generous but three is definitely not enough, for this odd sci-fi book. I didn't really engage with the characters. It's not that they aren't well drawn (they are), but Faber makes Peter a bit of a berk, and the backstory of drug abuse isn't enough to save the lead character from being a self-righteous bore. The aliens are genuinely alien, but boring, Peter's fellow colonists are as dull as he is, I kept waiting for him to get it on with Grainger and it never really happened. Weird. Four stars - for being well-written and compulsive - with one knocked off for being boring - it is then!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cymbals and actually incredible for the price., 23 Mar. 2016
Received mine today. Very nice looking, brilliant finish. Ride cymbal gives a nice loud stick sound with loads of definition, then a well controlled wash. Hitting the edge brings out the beast, the crashy overtones are lovely, it roars rather than clangs. The bell of the ride responds nicely to the shoulder of the stick, the tip doesn't really make the bell sing but it's still a perfectly useable sound. The 16 inch crash is penetrating and bright, with plenty of nice overtones and only a very slight "note" underneath. Nice balance of noise and tone. The 18 inch crash is lovely. Deeper and fuller in tone, more noise, more richness, again nice and loud and bright. I've not tried the hihats properly yet but first impressions are they are just as good as the rest of these cymbals. The whole set are great all-rounders, I'd happily use them for classic rock and metal, jazz-rock fusion, funk, pop, or even some styles of jazz (though ideally you'd need a darker, smoker ride for others). They compare very well with my Sabian AAX cymbals and Zildjian A crash.

Brilliant stuff. Didn't grab me by the nuts on first listen, like "Tied Up In Nottz" when I first heard it, but what it lacks in initial shock value (because I've heard some of these tunes before, I knew what I was going to be getting) it makes up for in inventiveness, JW's lyrical dexterity, surreal stream-of-consciousness humour, poetry, and aggression, and Andrew Fearn's grooves. This album has depth, candy like Divide and Exit... I'm going to be playing this over and over, for months.

The Time of the Lords: An Attack on Bataille's Slave Aesthetic of Transience
The Time of the Lords: An Attack on Bataille's Slave Aesthetic of Transience
by David Johnson DPhil.
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars "It is as impossible to imagine a Lord without time, as it is to imagine him without space", 27 Feb. 2015
Clear, original, and thought provoking, David Johnson demolishes Bataille's facile and adolescent arguments for "transience as transcendence" with merciless, implacable rigour. This book deserves to be better known. Aside from his attack on Battaille's philosophy, the book will make you think more about what constitutes real power and privilege, as it relates to a seriously underestimated aspect of our lives: the dimension of "free time".

4.0 out of 5 stars Questionable tuning?, 28 Oct. 2014
I really like the music - I'm a fan of some Lars Ulrik's other work, and I am listening to the Buxtehude for the first time now - but the harpsichord sounds out of tune to me in at least one piece so far, the Canzonetta in D minor. No doubt this is the proper tuning for this music, but at the moment it is making me feel slightly nauseous. It's all the way through this Dm piece, but there's a particularly egregious passage around 2:44 and another a 4:18! And the next track is showing signs of being the same.

I will probably get used to it - after all I can stomach the horn sections on 60's Ska records!

Works your emotions, harrowing, and terribly bleak, it's not a comedy (though it is funny in places) this is definitely not for everyone. But it is a work of utter genius. Hard to know what to say really. Blown away.
