1.0 out of 5 stars Filthy garbage, 29 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thought I was buying a murder/crime mystery. It's soft porn - and very bad soft porn too. Filthy terms for sex and gross sexual description. I believe there's an award for badly written sex in books - this book is a strong contender. I've read 36% of it and can't stomach any more. The bits that aren't dirty are formulaic, unoriginal and boring. I don't know how this book ever got published. It's absolute garbage. It was cheap, but would have been overpriced at a penny.

3.0 out of 5 stars None, 29 April 2015
Jerky plot, often rambling. Full of annoying typos. A tedious read. Some appealing characters, but the disjointed presentation and the many typos make this a chore to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, 23 Jan. 2015

A wonderful book, and one of the first African American children's stories written. It is touching, and well written. Much of it is based on Mildred D Taylor's family stories and experiences. She aimed to portray racism and segregation in a way that was acceptable for children. She succeeded, and that style of writing brings the reality of those cruel times to shock us as adults today.

What bunkum. Another one form the canon. Pages and pages of religious angst. Give it a miss, no matter what the academics say. Life's too short to waste on this rubbish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effing good, 23 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent. However, Rowling seemed so very keen to shake off the Harry Potter cloak that she felt it necessary to demonstrate how well she can swear. A very perceptive tale, and an enjoyable read. The Silkworm is miles better, and Cormoran Strike is one of the best anti heroes around.

2.0 out of 5 stars Monkey business in the bosom of the family, 23 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very strange tale indeed. An American university student tells us the tale of her sister's mysterious disappearance, then her brother's running away from home. Her father is a scientist, and about halfway through the book we learn that the sister is a chimpanzee, who joined the family shortly after the girl's birth. They were brought up as twins. Then, suddenly the chimp/sister disappears and the girl has no idea why. The brother turns up eventually and explains why the chimpanzee was disowned by the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories by a great writer, 23 Jan. 2015

I loved this book. There is a pattern to the stories, mostly concerning women and their inner thoughts. I don't have the words to describe how good these stories are.
