A good book to read and to reflect upon in the chair by the fire or on the train. I like the main character's journey to emotional and social freedom.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 16 Dec. 2013
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was captivated by the main character. The writer seemed to know how to keep me curious. I liked the way she wrote and set the scenes giving an atmosphere to rooms and houses.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very funny read, 1 Sept. 2013
This is a very enjoyable book, with a richly dark humour that is perfect for an autumn evening. It has bittersweet moments and superb characters, with a lovely engaging writing style. Five Stars. Will definitely read more by Lee Olds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help in comprehending World War I, 2 July 2013

Reading the introduction to Tirpitz's memoirs makes you curious and keen to read what the man himself has to say. Reading this book leaves you with many different feelings and thoughts of what might have been and how different the 20th century may have developed. It left me with a much bigger grasp of the complexity of European and World politics and wetted my appetite for further studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you!, 12 April 2013
Very pleased to find this book as I discovered information that cleared up a story about a family member who, we'd always thought it very strange, had been on a 'postal' ship stationed at Scapa Flow during the war...brilliant source of info. thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars An important book about English history, 12 April 2013
This is the second book I have read by this writer, the first being The London Hanged, and it is though different equally impressive. I was particularly interested in the Charter of the Forest which was signed alongside the Magna Carta, often thought to be merely a contract between the king and nobility, rather than one that involved the poor and gave them some guarantees of their rights, entitlements and customs concerning their use of the common. The book documents the way these rights were encroached upon and brings these old struggles very much alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books of all time, 12 April 2013
Even the title of this book is a masterpiece, you can read this time and time again and it is as vivid and as chilling as ever. A good kindle edition this, the illustrations help explain some of the older terms for clothes and so on.

5.0 out of 5 stars an elegant masterpiece, 23 Dec. 2012

I have been meaning to read this classic for many years and have finally got round to it. It offers a unique insight into a strict martial culture, with a strong code and a ruthless mindset. In most senses it is a world completely different to my own and what I have strived for in life. Yet within you see a snapshot of the sharp side of humanity, and yet a deep wisdom. I hope that wisdom that reaches the void, might bring with it peace. Clearly a carefully considered and presented book; a thought-provoking read.

5.0 out of 5 stars More please!, 19 Nov. 2012

These stories have been written so well and so sensitively. There is a gentleness about them which comforts you when you feel the pain , sorrow and dilemmas of the characters. There is also suspense which means you cannot put the stories down once started and once finished you are immediately curious about the next one.Stories you can read to or give to older children to allow them to experience other peoples dilemmas and problems.
