An amazing inspirational book that gives an amazing outline in reaching out and helping the poor. I work in prisons and amongst the poor in South Africa and this book has inspired me to do more and to follow William Booths example. There were many helpful things in the book that are relevant for application today and the I portance of deep long term holistic investment to see those on the margins healed and restored.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, 18 Nov. 2013

This is probably the best book I have read about alleviating poverty. I have personally learnt the hard way through offering relief to those I have worked with over the years and seen that rehabilitation and development are required to help people come out of poverty. Corbett and Fikkert don't only give great understanding on this topic but also offer great practical advice for development. It's a must read for any practitioner in development.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for development., 13 Oct. 2013

Toxic Charity illustrates the importance of well thought through charity. I have in my own experience witnessed Christian charity which has often done more harm than good. Although the heart issue for charity is not in question, this book offers great insight for Christians and Churches in how to move from "betterment" to "development" charitable practices. Often this means no quick fixes, sacrifice and long term intentional commitment. A great read.

Slum Life Rising: How to Enflesh Hope within a New Urban World
Slum Life Rising: How to Enflesh Hope within a New Urban World

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenging read which requires a response., 5 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Slum life rising challenges each Christians to consider the deep sacrifice of mission in following Jesus example of incarnational mission. Are we willing to respond to the suffering of the poor in urban slums? It's a challenge that definitely asks for surrender and to die to self. Ash Barker challenges us to respond, whether through relocating into slums or to support gospel work in slums. The Barkers set a wonderful example which should inspire all Christians to consider their own missional call whether in the workplace, in their communities or through their local church, or to be radical and move into a poor community.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chan challenges readers whether they are authentic Christ followers., 23 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Crazy Love is a challenging book that challenges Christians to stop living a lukewarm Christianity which is not biblical. Francis Chan challenges us to live as Jesus would have us live, to be willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of the gospel and to become an authentic Christ follower. The American or Western Church has developed a comfortable Christianity that panders to the whims and desires of many so called Christ followers. Hearing a nice sermon, or getting something out of the worship have become outcomes for many church goers. Chan debates biblically that this is not the kind of Christianity shared about in the bible, Christ calls us to sacrifice, to love aged and love our neighbor and this requires a biblical Christianity where Christ calls us to literally give everything up to follow Him. The kind of Christianity Chan explains is biblical and for the church to make a difference in this world we need more move back to the New Testament Acts church and away from the traditional man made church norms that is so often common in the Western World. A great book and challenges every reader with the question - are you a true follower of Christ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Wooden is a Great, 13 Jan. 2013

A fantastic book that presents excellent leadership principles from one of the greatest coaches of all time. Wooden's leadership philosophy is simple but profound. Whether you are a leader in business, sports or a father or mother raising kids this book offers nuggets of leadership principles that can easily be applied. Wooden's methods maybe said to be old fashioned but I personally believe society needs these leadership methods and approaches and they are sorely missed in institutions and families today. Great book!
