2.0 out of 5 stars A lot of waste., 16 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 25kg Dawn Chorus Peanuts (Misc.)
These nuts come largely as a mess of broken and trashy bits. Now, on the face of it, if your feeding small birds, that shouldn't matter but our experience has been with larger peanut bird feeders is that the trash and dust retains the damp and as the small bits and dust fll down through the larger pieces, they condense around the bottom and very quickly become mouldy and sticky which means that you have to pressure hose the feeder to get it adequately clean.

In short, not suitable for use in a wire mesh feeder and the slightly lower cost doesn't offset the waste and hassle. Altogether you're better with a whole-peanut offering and we won't be using these again.

WHY WE BELIEVE IN GOD(S)

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining and informative intro to why we are deceived., 12 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I see a couple of damning review of this book here and if you ignore those with a 'belief' axe to grind I can't see what the problem is. Andy Thomson simply gives us a grounding here on some of the evolutionary psychology and background to why humans find it so easy to believe in things for which there is no scientific or common sense substantiation. It's a short and fairly lightweight read but that doesn't detract from the presentation or the veracity of what is on offer and for those who want to criticise it for its lack of scientific reference, well, it doesn't pretend to be a peer-reviewed scientific paper, it's merely what it plainly claims to be, a concise guide and entertaining besides.

If the title has persuaded you mistakenly that this short book might be worth a look in order to reinforce your religious belief, it isn't but I suggest that you read it anyway because the disappointment might be offset by a forceful injection of the reality of how your DNA and evolution has lead you up the religious garden path. If you're in doubt about your belief or merely puzzled why people do, then this will help to enlighten you and point you in the direction of the further reading or deeper scientific analysis that some of the critics here think a concise guide ought to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving, shocking and compelling movie., 11 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok, parts of this, usually Hitler's ranting, have been ripped out for humorous YouTube movies, some of which are very funny indeed. The reason that these work so well is that Hitler was a very, very crazy and deeply bad person and the true reality of the evil insanity of the Third Reich comes over in this accurate story of the events leading up to his suicide and the collapse of his empire.

At times it's not easy watching, the spine chilling evil of the whole culture of Naziism comes over full force and the only empathy that you'll be able to dredge up will be for the core character, a young woman conscripted into service as the madman's personal secretary. It is largely her testimony after the war (you can see her interviewed in person forty years ago in parts of The World At War) upon which this movie is based.

The movie is subtitled into English but the script is so gripping that you'll almost forget that you're reading and watching at the same time, even if you hate subtitles.

For my money, this movie so well exposes the depths to which humanity can sink when gripped by right-wing supremacist and racist fantasy and the demise to which people who think in such a way will eventually fall that it should be shown in schools to youngsters old enough to stomach the true horror of where such thinking eventually leads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, 11 Jan. 2014

For the money, this is a sensationally good little torch. It's brighter than a large rubber, traditional bulb illuminated torch which I have and you can focus the beam very easily. Extremely robustly made and a far better buy than many other main brand torches of similar size. If you live in the unlit countryside, for the money, it's almost daft not to have one in the pocket of every outdoor jacket.

Very handy little gadget for erasing fine detail on pencil drawings. Works like a mechanical pencil. A must-have for the pencil artist's toolbox

3.0 out of 5 stars Poorly finished, 11 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My first disappointment with this was that it is much larger than I expected or wanted but that is entirely my own fault for not checking. However, the manufacturing quality is not as good as you expect from Derwent. This gadget works by moving a knurled knobbed bolt up and down to change the proportions of the dividers. Unfortunately, the recesses into which the parts of this small bolt are supposed to fit are very poorly machined and are a poor enough fit for the knob to have to be screwed very hard in order for the top and bottom of the bolt to squeeze into the rebates. The machining of the recesses also feature ragged ends of timber so they've been cut with blunt tools.

Secondly, for fine work, the pointed ends are poory finished, in fact, not all that pointed, I could do better myself with a Stanley knife and will probably have to. Frankly, this would be better, cheaper and more accurately made from a quality injection moulded plastic than from second grade timber and second rate tools. Not a very good effort from a company from whom we expect better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very very poor quality printing makes it almost unreadable, 7 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm a stickler for this review process being about the actual product; people moan about delivery and packaging when they should be reviewing the actual product. So here's an unusual book review prior to even finishing the book and the reason is that books, like everything else, not only have to be readable in terms of their content, story line and grammar, they have to be well made:

This book came highly recommended but I'm still suffering from the disappointment of finding that a book I was looking forward to is printed on junk paper with very faint type which varies in density not only from page to page but across each page. It's also printed in a positively archaeological font so I can tell it's not going to be a joy to read and if I could be arsed and wasn't bothered about the cost to the environment, I'd simply ask Amazon to take it back. Just flicking through it, the illustrations are dreadful. I realise that litho printing uses dots to render images on paper but you're not supposed to be able to distinguish the individual dots at arms length. The author uses several graphs to illustrate his point but on the wole these are unreadable because the different symbols used to identify different species on a scatter grapher are indistinguishable one from the other. The original book was first printed in 1977 and if this is what we had to put up with back then, then I'm surprised anybody read anything. All in all, the print quality is like a fourth generation photocopy shrunk to half size.

Whatever you buy on the internet, you're entitled to expect decent manufacturing quality and this does not offer anything near an acceptable quality. Like at least one other reviewer, I'd recommend you not to buy this paperback item and do as I probably will, seek the hard cover version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good starter kit, 2 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've only recently got back into drawing so I bought this with the view to stocking up again on most of what I need. Basically, the kit contains everything you're likely to need from graphite pencils to charcoal, a pencil sharpener and it also includes the all-important putty rubber.
If I had one reservation, it would be that the pencils could be a bit better. R&L's hardness rating for pencils seems to be adrift from the other pencil manufacturers - altogether, I found them a bit in the soft side but then, you might not. However, if you're drawing for fun then this is a pretty good buy to get started and you have a neat tin to keep everything ship shape.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 2 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First of all, this item arrived in the usual Amazon one-size-fits-all packaging in an internal un-branded box. The packet contained no HP documentation whatsoever and since HP are a very large and brand-conscious company, it does raise the question of whether this actually is a legitimate HP product.
More importantly, the drive did not work. It wouldn't mount or read any of the varied media that I tried with it: film DVD, Writable DVD, music CD, writable CD, Blueray anything.
Obviously, I've returned it for a refund so full marks to amazon for that but I'm afraid that when you get sent a product that's masquerading as a mainstream brand, at a price that's several times that of the cheaper products but neither feels authentic nor actually works at all then you can't really give it anything other than the lowest score. If Amazon had a Zero score, I'd give it that.

Just-about blasts its way backwards across my desk it shifts so much air. Nice retro-style design, small and pretty quite. Can't really fault it for the money.
