3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction for the curious, 28 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
For the purposes of this review, I have received an "uncorrected proof", which is simoly he text: there are no diagrams, and no pictures; I would hope that there are some in the final product, although the text makes no reference to diagrams.

"Knowing about some basic bits of physics turns the world into a toy box", is the sentence that sticks out for me in Dr Helen Czerski's introduction to her book on the physics of everyday life (which I suppose is really all physics!). What she wants her book to do is to get her general readers – who are not in any way close to being a physics expert – enthused with physics, and thinking as a physicist when looking at the world around us all. She seeks to "link the little things we see every day with the big world we live in".

The chapters are
1. Popcorn and rockets
2. What goes up must come down
3. Small is beautiful
4. A moment in time
5. Making waves
6. Why don't ducks get cold feet?
7. Spoons, spirals and Sputnik
8. When opposites attract
9. A sense of perspective

The titles of some of the chapters are a bit vague, but the author makes the links between ideas clear, although on occasion she does have odd links, and it can be difficult to get a sense of the narrative or where the ideas are going or coming from. Chapter 4. exemplifies this: I found this very difficult to follow, its unifying idea being that things happen in moments, but I did wonder why this was relevant. (I should add that I hold a degree in Chemistry and did some specialism in quantum mechanics).

On the whole, this is a decent enough book, but the conversational style – with constant anecdotes about the everyday (such as getting ketchup from a bottle) –. Echoes tiring, and in the end gets in the way of whatever the author is trying to communicate. A lot of this could and should have been much more succinct.

Still, this is a nice introduction to the physics under discussion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb headphones, 26 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are a superb pair of headphones.

I am incredibly impressed with the sound quality, which surrounds the listener in an enveloping sound. This demonstrates that there is excellent isolation and one really does not hear at all external noise. The sound envelope is full, with bass strong, too (as required).

The Bluetooth functionality works very easily, and then the lack of a cable is a real bonus.

Charging is quick, and the whole lot are stored in a handy and nicely designed and secure/sturdy case.

Simply, a terrific pair of headphones. Highly recommended.

I haven't tested whether they're 'waterproof'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, 24 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are essential for making picture of landscapes and where there is reflected light. I use this on my Sony compact, which I have had for years; this camera came with a lens adapter, which this screws on. Look for the screw three to ensure that this will work for you.

The build quality is fine, and it does the job ideally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect printing, 22 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Why spend money on brand-new cartridges when these do the job perfectly?

They look just like the real thing. When installing, the printer says (as per Amazon's instructions) that the cartridge has been used before. That's fair enough: it's the printing that counts.

I don't do high-quality photo stuff. I just want to print documents and the like, and this is perfect for that. I shall be using these sort of cartridges from now on.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, 20 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are a delightful addition to a bath!

There are two in the box. The box claims "Upon adding to the water, the base dissolves and sparkles gently, which releases fragrance. Whilst the topping contains super-moisturising cocoa and shea butters to nourish and soften the skin".

I have to say that my skin felt nicely nourished, and the fragrance was lovely and relaxing.

I'm really thinking ahead here: I think that these would make excellent stocking fillers for Christmas, or as something nice next to the bath if you rent out any rooms for Airbnb, that type of thing.

Lovely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well-built, 19 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I can't attest to the ability of these to trap moles, but I can attest to the excellent build-quality. These are very thoughtfully designed catchers, and will surely do the job as required, although as others have commented, quite a lot of pressure is required... Some manual modification is needed to make them more sensitive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent duvet, 19 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have received the 10.5 tog double.

It comes very nicely packaged in a bag that can be reused for the purposes of duvet storage.

This is very well made, and exceedingly comfortable.

It's a good 2m x 2m in size. Even in is hot weather I find it absolutely fine, the material seems very breathable, so if sweating it is not uncomfortable.

The material of the duvet is quite silky, smooth to touch, and the filling feels very luxurious.

Very recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, 17 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is so much easier than the tea towel and bowl of boiling water, which needs to be refreshed frequently with more boiling water.

This, however, provides a constant supply of steam, and at least for me it fits really well around my face.

It is quite relaxing in its operation, but seems to be a gimmick, much like what this is anyway.

If steaming is your thing, I am fairly confident that this will suit you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb iron, 16 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a superb iron.

I would recommend to all that steam-generator irons are a must, rather than the conventional ones that you are likely used to.

These use lower temperatures, so clothes don't suffer any damage. And the use of the steam means that the creases are ironed out in no time at all.

The reservoir is easy to fill (I use a jug). The cable is sufficiently long, so no problems there, and the whole lot is a lot lighter than I thought it would be, so that's pretty good!

This now lives in the corner of my kitchen.

It seems to be very well made, as one would expect from Philips.

Terrific.

JBL Boost TV Ultra-Compact Wireless Home Cinema Speaker System with Bluetooth, Optical and 3.5mm Connectivity - Black

Price: £133.68

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little speaker, 15 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a powerful and fairly small speaker.

In the box you get the cables that you might want to use: I am pleased that it comes with these.

Setup is a breeze, and the handy remote control is a useful feature.

I have it connected to my TV using the optical cable, and it really is a great boost to it. The sound is clear, and while the bass is not as heavy as I'd occasionally like, that is to be expected -- bass can only ever be properly provided by a separate speaker.

Everything was superbly packaged up, and the speaker itself is attractive.

A great addition to the aural armoury.
