Don't buy the LG RHT498H, 6 Nov. 2011
Buy anything except this useless junk. It has so many flaws that it is a disgrace that any manufacturer allowed it out of their factory. If LG were worth anything they would recall all the units and replace or repair them. It turns out all the problems I have experienced have been reported elsewhere. If onlyI had checked more carefully.
I am sick of finding it sitting saying that it is downloading firmware and has been doing so for hours on end. It never finishes. Most of the buttons on the remote control are slow to respond if they respond at all. Often the only way to get it to change channels after repeatedly pressing the left or right channel selectors (PR+/-) is to switch the whole unit off and on again and then try. This usually fixes it temporarily. All the function buttons behave in this manner. I thought at first it was the batteries in the remote control unit but, after changing them several times, that turned out not to be the case.
Recording a DVD from something that has already been recorded onto the HDD doesn't work either. When it gets to 100% it just sits there and nothing other than the on/off button works so the only way to get the now broken DVD out of the unit is to switch it off and on again. I know the disk has to be finalized but that option doesn't appear because although the unit has spent an age writing to the dvd when it fails to finish it thinks there is nothing on the disk so the finalize option is greyed out.
Needless to say it is impossible to get in touch with LG. They have an online facility but all it does is direct you to a phone number where you can listen to muzak for 40 minutes or so at a pound a minute no doubt. LG just dont want to be bothered by their customers.
This is the worst example of digital electronics I have ever had the misfortune to buy and I certainlty will NEVER buy any LG product again. In fact I will not buy anything like this online again either. Had I gone to a shop I would have seen it working (or not as the case may be) and if there was a problem I could have taken it back. Much harder to do when items are bought online.
