3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., 3 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Well priced, and well presented. A pretty good introductory work perhaps, but as another reviewer comments, the section on transfusion seems very dated. A fair amount of recent work on platelet function that could have been discussed, and there is nothing on the rheology of blood in general. As a stop-gap,"please get me passed this exam" book, it might pass muster. Seems more of the work of a couple of academics who know their field well, but need to make some quick money off yet another edition of their text book,

Underground Buildings: More Than Meets the Eye
Underground Buildings: More Than Meets the Eye
by Loretta Hall
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £21.22

4.0 out of 5 stars Great review, 1 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fairly recent book, in the scheme of things - little on underground buildings has been published since the early 80s and the tail end of the 1973 oil crisis, Hall's book is well researched and illustrated description of "underground" or earth sheltered buildings, covering many years, there are some of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings like Jacobs II and Marin county offices.

Almost a coffee table book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex, 24 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a seemingly comprehensive approach to a very complex problem within business management: How to keep "control" whilst allowing creative energies to flow in some sort of free manner. The book describes current practice and what might be called "best" practice. Deschamps work is well written and fluid, if a little "academic" to the casual reader

I don't think that the even "top" management can handle the disruption of the most innovative minds to the betterment of all parties yet. We have seen the plaudits that the innovation of the companies like "Best Buy" which only a year or two ago was being described as groundbreaking, crumble to dust as the harsh reality of delivering a real return bites.

The Wives of Los Alamos
The Wives of Los Alamos

5.0 out of 5 stars A great study in people and times, 4 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There are four devices in this book. One exploded in White Sands and two over Japan. Nesbit's book's fourth device is writing in the first person plural throughout, which starts out jarring with every few sentences, but as you read on begins to make sense. In 21st Century terms, the book is perhaps an invitation to observe "Girl Power" amongst the wives of the men who gave the world the atomic bomb, in three years intense work. It invites us to share the triumphs and tragedies of the women who were effectively drafted into the war effort, often with their children in tow and hidden in the high New Mexico desert. As a result of the 4th Device, the book has to struggle to build character pictures from all the characters in the book. Women with children, women without, women becoming pregnant, women losing babies, one woman losing her only son to drowning in the pond in the centre of town.

In turns sad, happy, annoyed, angry - I found the book described in more personal terms even than Eleanor Jette's classic book "Inside Bob 1635" what it must have been like to BE there in 1942-1945. I can vouch for the word pictures of the place, I;ve visited friends in Los Alamos on several occasions over the years. Nesbit's book does justice to the time and the people.

5.0 out of 5 stars What if ?, 27 Mar. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There are few things more poignant than asking "What if ?" This book is both an academic and popular treatment of a question many of us have asked over the years about WWI - "The Great War", the "War to End All Wars", except it wasn't. From what MIGHT have happened to the inevitability of what DID happen, Lebow's highly approachable text is an excellent analysis of the root causes of WW1 and the aftermath of Armistice.
