4.0 out of 5 stars Two strong essays about happiness and sexuality, 10 Mar. 2003
This book features two papers written in different times. The first one is from the 1930’s, and is a very mature analysis of the ways civilisations and individuals go in order to achieve happiness as it is. The second one, written in the 1900’s, is about ‘civilised’ sexuality and mental illnesses, and allows us to see how a whole new science emerged.
I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, and especially in Freud. I read other works by this author, and I think this one keeps up with the overall quality of the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gabriel at his best, 1 Feb. 2003
This review is from: Seja Voce Mesmo (Audio CD)
This album is great. It continues the tradition of great rap sung in Portuguese that he started with his previous works.
«Até Quando?» has a great video clip and is one of the best songs by Gabriel o Pensador.
Worth buying, worth listening, speacially if you know Portuguese. If you don't, you'll like the mixture between rap, samba and other tropical sounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book by a Great Man, 17 Jan. 2003
This is a book worth reading.
In it one can find a loathsome of texts by the Subcomandante about several issue.
Some of such texts are quite dated, but most of them are ageless.
I recommend it to everyone interested in the Zapatista Movement and the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation).

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like a good old Socialist Realism Book, 16 Jan. 2003
This review is from: Mother (Paperback)
This book tells the story of a woman living in the tsarist Russia of the early XX century that is drawn into social activism by her son.
Gorky is a very good storyteller, and the whole plot really moves you.
It might became a bit dull if one is not really into Socialism or Communism, since popular heroes is what this is all about.
Even so, I think everyone should give it a try.
This is the book that inspired Bertolt Brecht to writing his acclaimed play «Mother Courage and her Children».

The Boat Plays (Absolute Classics)
The Boat Plays (Absolute Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars Three magnificent Plays worth reading and seeing, 16 Jan. 2003
I have studied «The Boat to Hell» («A Barca do Inferno») in high school and seen the full play of the three boats («A Barca da Glória», «A Barca do Inferno» and «A Barca do Purgatório») in the Dona Maria II National Theatre in Lisbon.
The usual order by which they are usually presented is not the one on the book, but «Hell, Purgatory, Heaven» and, as they go up one the «Final Judgement scale», they also go up on the social scale.
Gil Vicente strongly criticises his contemporary society, from the small burglar to the highest priest (the Pope himself appears in the «Boat to Heaven»).
The Devil and an Angel are the main characters, as they lead the rest of the characters to their eternal faith.

The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights (Penguin Modern Classics)
The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights (Penguin Modern Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificient book, 14 Jan. 2003
This book is quite different from all the others I read by J. S. in style and in subject.
It reveals his passion for old epics and especially for ancient English. It is the story of King Arthur and other knights of his time, and is the result of the research Steinbeck made through several books, and not only Malory’s.
The letters in the Appendix are interesting in order to understand the process of writing the book.
The only setback of the book would be that it is not finished, and was not edited or even corrected by Steinbeck, but, as with all good books, it is not the and that matters, but the way the story is told. And, in storytelling, John Steinbeck is one of the best.

Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo (O Campo da palavra)
Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo (O Campo da palavra)

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth learning Portuguese to read it, 29 Dec. 2001
Saramago is one of the best Portuguese writers ever (siding with Fernando Pessoa and Luís de Camões). Once one dives into Saramago's world there is no coming back, it is impossible not to keep reading his books. He certainly deserved his Nobel Prize.
About this book I would say that it is surely a must-read. It is dificult to tell history from fiction (is there really a difference to be told?). It is Jesus Christ made a man just like any other, or maybe not (how often do you get on a boat with both God and the Devil?).
Do not miss it, it might became the best book you ever read.

Animal Farm: Playscript (Acting Edition)
Animal Farm: Playscript (Acting Edition)

5.0 out of 5 stars Animals Empire, 11 Mar. 2001
More than a metaphor about he Soviet Union, Orwell criticeses all political changes that occured (and are occuring) throughout history. Everyone should read this book, as well as 1984, in order to better understand the world we live in.

Das Wvangelium Nach Jesus Christus
Das Wvangelium Nach Jesus Christus

5.0 out of 5 stars Another way of looking at religion, 11 Mar. 2001
A must-read by the first Portuguese Literature Nobel. After reading this no-one can keep feelign the same towards Christ, God or Devil. Saramago makes history with this book.
