Not a particularly inspired piece of work. Nice-enough pictures but the words lack imagination. Some rhythm to them would work a treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired by madness!, 29 April 2009
I'd just finished reading the Ghosts of Everest (Jochen Hemmleb) when I was told about Dom's book. Where Mr Hemmleb bored the living daylights out of me, Dom's recounting of the EverestMax journey is brilliant, well written and kept me enthralled from start to finish. Its a mad journey but one full of inspiration and a "can-do" attitude that's probably been missing in society since the likes of Mallory and Irvine reached the first step. Top stuff, go and buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense, intrigue, and one of the greatest film lines ever!, 27 Mar. 2001
This is THE quintessential timeless classic. The Third Man is sheer brilliance.
Set in post-war Vienna, Orson Welles plays the plain evil Harry Lime. However, you just can't help but like the character and his use of black comedy. The fair ground scene is a must-see for suspense and Lime's 'Cuckoo-Clock' description of artistic Europe is superb. What makes 'The Third Man' even better is the arrival of its main character. You wait at least an hour to see Harry Lime having learned about from him from several opinions. His entrance is sinister but at the same time heartwarming. A must for all film fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Beautiful' - the greatest song ever written..., 15 Mar. 2001
The Grams from Liverpool. A four-piece band that make it big driven on by the ambition of their lead man, Keva McClusky to out-gun their biggest rivals and arch enemy Helmet Horrocks and Sensira. Powder takes you through the ins-and-outs of the music industry in a tale that you simply won't put down. 'Beautiful' is the major track that the Grams unleash on the world and its a pure hit. You don't hear it, you don't see the video, but you know that this is the greatest song ever written.
Pure emotion, pure laughs, pure rock 'n' roll, pure cocaine, pure excellence. This is sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll at its best. What more could you ask for in 500 pages?

4.0 out of 5 stars A Daring mission with only one outcome..., 13 Mar. 2001
This review is from: Too Late The Hero [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a typical war flick. Team go out on mission, you know some will die, if not all will die. However, this is surprisingly good viewing. Caine and Fonda play the Brit and Yank almost playing of each other in a competition of who is the better soldier. The mission allows them to come together and culminates with a daring race back to the base. Who will make it? What one-liner will Caine come out with?
This isn't the best war movie ever made but it is well worth a gander and won't look at all out of place in a good film collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning. Humbling. A beautiful voyage into the mind at war., 12 Mar. 2001
Although on release the majority of the spotlight went to the flagwaving epic 'Saving Private Ryan', The Thin Red Line is a far superior film with regard to warfare and mentality during the Second World War. Cleverly adapted from the classic James Jones novel, The Thin Red Line is filled with stunning cinematography, excellent direction, and superb performances, Nick Nolte, Elias Koteas, Adrien Brody, and most notably from Ben Chapman and Sean Penn. The film explores, nature, life, death, the ills of war and what it all means. This could easily have fallen in to the cliched bracket of 'war is hell' and 'loss of innocence' movies. However, it is far above and beyond its closest rivals. This is truly a classic and incredibly moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me want to drink rum..., 12 Mar. 2001
This review is from: The Rum Diary (Paperback)
What can I say? I was lucky enough to be reading this book whilst on a beach in the middle of the pacific ocean and it gave me a great thirst. Having listened to the almost idylic lifestyle that Hunter S Thompson was living throughout this book; Work when he felt like, fresh lobster, sex, and booze. Oh, and of course lots of rum. I felt obliged, almost mystically drawn to go to the bar and drink a heck of a lot of rum. Any book that can make this impact must be good as far as I'm concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars j-u-r-a-S-s-i-c 5 in the flesh!!!!!!, 2 Mar. 2001
This review is from: Quality Control (Audio CD)
I don't do this... It was Monday morning, 8:55am waiting outsie my local music store to get in and buy this album. I have never, ever, ever waited like that to buy a new release but after the self-titled EP, 'Quality Control' had to be good... and it is! The re-working of 'Concrete Schoolyard' into 'Concrete and Clay' is a personal favourite but the whole album is classic hip-hop. It is a shame that J5 haven't received the wider support they deserve. However, if you buy this you have the honour of saying you have something very special in your music collection, and no one can take that away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vere are Zee Stonzes?, 2 Mar. 2001
This review is from: Snatch (VHS Tape)
Snatch is wildly entertaining and wickidly funny. If you enjoyed 'Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' you have to see this flick as it is superb. Brad Pitt's Irish gypsy accent is highly comical along with Benicio Del Toro's line; "Vere are zee Stonzes?" in a cool Turkish accent. The rest of the script is typical Ritchie, filled with the witty one-liners and London colloquialisms that made 'Lock, Stock...' so entertaining. The storyline in Snatch tells the tale of a very large diamond and the several groups of people trying to get their grubby little poors on it and of the unfortunate souls who get landed with it. An excellent film, highly amusing with exceptional dialogue and a killer soundtrack - you can't ask for much more. No film fan should miss 'Snatch'

Ozomatli [VINYL]
Ozomatli [VINYL]

5.0 out of 5 stars Two words - BUY IT!!!!!, 2 Mar. 2001
This review is from: Ozomatli [VINYL] (Vinyl)
This is superb! Jurassic 5 meets Cuba. Simply magic, from 'Cut Chemist Suite' to 'Superbowl Sundae' and 'One Last Song'. Funky hip-hop and Latino rhythms that you can't help but bounce to. This album would cheer up any depressive and make a sunny day out of midwinter. They were excellent at Glastonbury 2000 and the album captures their ability to entertain. My advice is to beg, steal, borrow or buy this album cos it is brilliant. 'Nuff said.
