2.0 out of 5 stars mostly awful, 17 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Battleship [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
The story seems to be about if aliens visit this planet dont try and negotiate with them, just threaten them and blow them up, and it doesnt really mater what the consequences are. Apart from the message of the film there are some really corny moments like when the original crew of the battleship appear at photo worthy positions on que accross the ship ready to face a danger noone has told them about. The aliens are also easy to kill and lack a real sense of intelligence superior to our own, which is suprising given how they crossed the universe to get here. The acting is at best wooden. Saw this at the cinema, went to see it because of the menacing shots of the alliens on the trailors and the air of mystery, disapointed.

Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World
Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World
by Samantha Power
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving well researched and written, 14 Nov. 2011
The is the first book I have read where I have bothered to read the acknowledgements. Samantha Power explaination of the political context of Sergio work is spell binding. I got sucked into the book and felt for this man for each page of the book I read. An amazingly frank account of the politics and life of Sergio Vieira de Mello given that he has died relativly recently.

Machiavelli: A Man Misunderstood
Machiavelli: A Man Misunderstood
by Michael White
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.99

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging, 27 Oct. 2011
I found this a highly engaging account of Machiavelli largely from the historical scene setting painting the picture in which Machievelli existed. I did not get as much a sense of the man, from the book I could see how he fitted into world affairs of the time, but not so much a sense of who he was

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius, 24 Oct. 2011
I guess it would be difficult to write a book that wasnt interesting about this man, a National Hero of Finland. IT presents both sides to his reputation and gives a good depth to the political, social and economic world in which he lived and how he enabled a tiny nation to succeed against the odds, The best book I have read this year by far

The Case of the Pope: Vatican Accountability for Human Rights Abuse

5.0 out of 5 stars highly absorbing, 11 Oct. 2010
a fascinating incite into canon law and the Catholic church. Even if you take on board all the points of the negative reviews, you cannot get away from the apparent feeble nature of the Catholic church in dealing with the perpetrators of Child abuse amongst its ranks.

both one star reviews in my view miss the point of this book and attack peripherals to Robertson's argument. The papacy is very much a human invention set up to ensure consistency in the message of its priests at a time when there were numerous interpretations of the bible. It now has its own state and enormous wealth and is tied into the political arena . Combined with a history of the popes - Saints and Sinners by Eamon Duffy this book opens my eyes to the weaknesses of the Catholic Church it does not undermine my belief in the principles of religion only what men have done to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars More heart less debate, 30 Sept. 2010
This review is from: A Journey (Audio CD)
I wouldnt have paid over £11.00 for this book because I think there are far better books out there for the money, more engaging ect. The first 100 pages were difficult to get through and felt very detached , and at times the book felt like a well argued disertation but one that needed an injection of feeling at some points for example when Mr Blair talks about Clair short dismisses her with very little content and he quantitifies the abilities of a number of his team without I feel due justification and gives scant evidence for his views. there are however some gems, his analysis of John Prescott especially prince Charles views of Mr Prescott will be one of things i remember from the book.

This after all Tony Blair and even though I disagree with many of his arguments and dont think he has been held sufficiently accountable for the war in Irac he has formed part of the background to my life for the last 10 years

3.0 out of 5 stars Preferred age of Wonders 2 or Shadow Magic, 29 Sept. 2010
this game has arguably better graphics than Age of wonders but for me lacks much of the character. Partly I think because the presentation of age of wonders is slightly darker more menacing than the for me comic style approach of Heroes of might and magic . The maps for age of wonders also looks less cluttered and feels less computer/ arcade gameish.
