5.0 out of 5 stars it's a great book, exactly on my humour wavelength, 8 July 2014

it's a great book, exactly on my humour wavelength; informative and insightful in unexpected ways. The mix of ballooning history and autobiography works well, surprisingly well I would have said if someone had described the book to me before I read it. I found all the stuff on CBT most interesting and persuasive. The Sadler story and the various sub-plots are splendid, great material for the book with an inbuilt hilarity which the author milks with great skill. Quite apart from the extraordinary story of the amazing Sadler and son, some of the minor characters are superb especially the stage villain Blanchard and his pyrotechnically insane widow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perceptive insight into a past era, 11 Jun. 2014

At this end of Europe most people understandably know very little about Charles von Habsburg, the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, who only reigned for a short time before his centuries old empire collapsed in chaos. Gordon Brook Shepherd was uniquely well qualified amongst English writers by his experience and connections to produce this biography of a man, who in other circumstances might have been known to history as a great ruler, particularly as he was supported by an indomitable wife, Zita. The book is very well researched, well written, and well judged. It avoids the unjustifiable criticism of the emperor made by some other writers and the near hagiography of some Catholic biographers. My only slight quibble is that the author takes too much at face value the statements in the diaries of Colonel Strutt. This is understandable as Col Strutt is the main source for the years after Charles's removal from power. Strutt was in many respects an objectionable person with an overweening belief in the rightness of his own opinions and actions, though he was undoubtedly brave, resourceful and the prime mover in assisting Charles to leave Austria, but his version of events, though substantially correct, is self serving.

Lots of celebrity writers have cashed in on the WW1 frenzy but if you want to begin to understand the origins of WW1 this is the book to read. Though long and very detailed it is clearly written and explains the incredibly complex situation in the Balkans and the conflicting and often contradictory network of secret treaties and personal and political rivalries with great lucidity. I'm still reading and gaining new insights in every chapter. It's salutary reading too at a time when political settlements are once again unravelling in Eastern Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous book, 11 Jun. 2014

Though an avid reader of Doris Lessing's books I had never read this her first book. Having read a good deal of well-reviewed but in my opinion rather second-rate novels recently, I was blown away by the brilliance of the writing and reminded of why I had read almost all of Lessing's other fiction. But don't read it if you are feeling depressed. It won't cheer you up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good replacement, 11 Jun. 2014

We bought this as a replacement for a similar tap purchased in Germany that had started to leak. This one is not so good to look at but works well. One oddity is that it only turns through ninety degrees and in the 'cold' position the tap handle faces forward rather than to the right as in most mixer taps but one soon adjusts to this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good once put together, 11 Jun. 2014

I ordered this with some trepidation after reading the reviews about assembling it. It arrived on time and all the parts were there - except the assembly instructions. Having read other reviews that the instructions were not helpful anyway I used the guidance provided in two of the other reviews and these were most helpful as the diagram was hard to understand and inaccurate in naming some of the parts. The assembly took awhile and needed two of us to achieve. Once built, though, it has proved to be most useful, easy to pull and manoeuvre. The tipper mechanism is easy to operate. It's the right size for us and our garden and looks to be sturdy though we have not transported anything heavy yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money as a projector stand, 6 Mar. 2011
This had its first public outing at a conference yesterday and was used and liked by everyone as a projector stand. One user took details so as to buy one. It is stable, easy to assemble, adjust and take apart and not too heavy of bulky to carry around. It is also half the price of other stands advertised. However, it is too small for many laptops and should be advertised only as a projector stand.
