5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with beautiful patterns, 26 Oct. 2016
This is a truely lovely book. It is well constructed, so you know exactly where you are and what you need to do next. The explanations are thorough but not condescending and the colours are out of this world. One of the things I like about this book (and the author herself) is how relaxed they are about makes of yarn and what you can use. She gives several options of yarns she recommends but you also feel that you can go completely off piste and you'd still have a wonderful blanket. Not all designers and patterns are like that!

I loved this book. I had read it when it was written and released weekly on the author's blog, but I read it in about four days when I got my hands on the book. It is an informed, funny, kind look at one of the major institutions, but it doesn't avoid big questions.

This is wonderful book. The story flows beautifully and the characters stay with you long after you finish the book. This is the first of a series, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious book, very reliable, 30 Sept. 2012

This is a brilliant cake book. I've made 3 of the cakes so far and they have been universally liked, even by my children who are notoriously fussy! The instructions are clear, the pictures are beautiful and the range of cakes is good.
I would recommend this book for anyone, beginner or established baker, because even though all the cakes are classics, it is a really nice selection to have all in one book.
So far I've made the mocha cake (best chocolate cake I've made, and the only one my children have liked), seed cake and marmalade cake. All glorious.

The Rise and Fall of the Broadway Musical
The Rise and Fall of the Broadway Musical
by Mark Grant
Edition: Paperback
Price: £20.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy in places, but has weighty things to say, 16 Jan. 2010
This is indeed quite academic, and therefore not a choice if you want a gentle skip through the history of Broadway. And certainly to be handled with care if you are a lover of our more modern musicals, because there are a number of real truths in here that may disturb your picture of the Andrew Lloyd-Webber world. But if you want real depth of thinking, intelligent insights based on hugely impressive research and solid thinking, this is a fabulous book. Occasionally gets lost in long lists of historic theatre figures to back up points you were agreeing with three pages ago, it is otherwise masterly put together.

So if you like a serious book, taking a proper look at why the American musical flourished, and what has caused the fall to Disney froth and high concept junk, look no further...
