Aspects of Occultism
Aspects of Occultism

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarity and Insight, 6 Feb. 2014

This review is from: Aspects of Occultism (Paperback)
In areas so often rendered fuzzy and vaguely 'feel good' by the pop New Age movement, Dion Fortune's clear, definite comments and explanations make the occult (hidden or unseen) world tangible and practically accessible. If you feel there has to be more to experience beyond basic materiality and that the currently fashionable healie-feelie descriptions leave you uninformed and incomplete - then it's time you read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fuji upgrade to the S4500, 1 Feb. 2013
I owned a Fujifilm 5600 for six years and got to know it's short cuts, eccentricities and limitations very well. Just before Christmas it gave up completely and I had to decide on a replacement. Having already spent out on presents, budget was a serious priority so when I saw the S4500 at a very good price on Amazon I quickly and thoroughly researched why I should buy it rather than the now huge range of competitors.

The familiar interface, much larger screen, vast resolution increase (5.1MP to 14MP) and generally simplified and smarter auto, semi-auto and almost manual settings, all in a price within £2 of it's predecessor in 2006 prompted me to take the plunge.

Has it lived up to my hopes? Yes, in every way so far. Low light capture may be nowhere near a £1000 Nikon but it's way better than the 5600, auto focus is much smarter and, for closeups of flowers, etc, the super-macro is priceless. 30X zoom helps sometimes but having that flexibility with image stabiliser enables the S4500 to outperform almost anything in its class.

In conclusion: I'm delighted!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shogun - still a winner, 15 Jun. 2012

I saw parts of this serial in the 70s when it was first televised and wanted to share the experience with my 13 year old son. I had forgotten how very dated the music track was, which I initially found a little off-putting, but we were soon engrossed in the story.

Based on the historical events around the year 1600, the author, James Clavell, has given different names to all the characters involved, for example Lord Torenaga represents the real Tokogawa Ieyasu, but the political and international events underlying the 'personal' plot are true to life. Due to the in-depth involvement of Japanese actors, researchers, prop-makers and management, the details of costume, props, language, customs, etiquette and so on are perfect - they even went as far as building a traditional coastal ship, a galley, the first to be built in Japan for 300 years as well as using the replica of Drake's ship "Golden Hinde", which had sailed to Japan from Britain at that time, to play the Dutch (and Portugese) ship.

A Dutch ship with an English captain did run aground on the shore of Japan and the captain not only survived but went on to become the first ever foreigner to become a samurai. Shogun is a romantic dramatisation of his story.

Apparently the Japanese version of the movie focuses much more on their own historical events and characters, this improves the style of the narrative since one gets the sense that our English hero, Blackthorne, as an almost unnoticable piece of driftwood in the great upheavals that established the Tokogawa Shogunate which was to last for over 250 years.

Based on the book by American author James Calvell, Shogun is aimed at western audiences and sensibilities. Magnificent epic, as it is, shot through with an outstanding romantic interest, it portrays Japan in an accessible if sometimes shocking way, giving an colourful impression of a completely different culture at a pivotal time in its history. Unfortunately it fails completely in the romantic interest since such a liaison could never have occurred between a noble married lady and another man, let alone a foreigner, but for a 'cracking yarn' you couldn't do much better!

Berlitz Learn Italian Premier (PC/Mac) (6 CD Set - Windows & Macintosh)
Berlitz Learn Italian Premier (PC/Mac) (6 CD Set - Windows & Macintosh)

4.0 out of 5 stars Berlitz Italian Premier, 27 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This Italian Language edition comes in an enormous box reminiscent of Microsofts early packaging but boils down to 4 Cds for listening in your car, etc., a Windows installer, a Mac installer, 1 x iPod/MP3 exercises, 1 x Palm & pocket PC software and a small, thorough but general manual on how to use the software, etc.

The native speaker recordings sound authentic (I'm not an Italian speaker so I have to trust) and the program so far seems well conceived so I think it's going to prove good value. The test will be in whether I will both understand and be understood when I next go to Italy!

Musashi: The Art of War v. 2: An Epic Novel of the Samurai Era
Musashi: The Art of War v. 2: An Epic Novel of the Samurai Era
by Eiji Yoshikawa
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Musashi book 2: The Art Of War, 17 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the second book of Eiji Yoshikawa's epic dramatisation of the personal evolution of historical swordsman Miyamoto Musashi from wild youth through to masterful maturity. It's not just about fighting, violence and barbarity by any means. It's the story of one young man's journey from anger, frustration and lawlessness to self-mastery, compassion and patience, from raw talent and luck to becoming what Musashi himself calls "a real human being".

Miyamoto Musashi was a real man at a pivotal time in Japan's history, when a century of devastating civil war had exhausted the country and the people and bands of lethally armed swordsmen (Ronin) roamed the land on both sides of the "law" when law as we know it barely existed at all. The most powerful and wily warlord (Daimyo) has just grabbed the opportunity to become Shogun and has begun to impose the law and order by strict feudal rule that characterises Japan's next two-and-a-half centuries.

The Art of War, book two of five, follows Musashi intense, driven self-training and his clashes with various opponents, and also introduces Kajiro (a handsome young man) who will become Musashi's arch rival and potentially his nemesis. Whether you are interested in the myth of the heroic warrior or the inner development of wisdom, stillness, peace and self-mastery - all blended with a thread of pure and faithful love between Musashi and his childhood friend Otsu that survives and thrives through challenges, disappointments and unexpected kindnesses - these books make riveting reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr Mikao Usui, 20 Oct. 2010

As a Reiki practitioner and "master" since 1990 I've had constant niggling questions about Reiki as it's taught in the West. Having studied Japanese martial arts, the combination of soft, "healie feelie" approach and strict, fairly narrow range of hand positions has seemed incomplete, as if the whole story has not been told.

Now this is a very thin book and it certainly not the whole text of Dr Usui's student handbook, but it is packed with dense useable information, attitudes, pre-treatment preparation and other techniques that I have found myself incorporating intuitively from other disciplines I've met with along the way.

Transcribed, edited and annotated by a German married to a Japanese, ably assisted by her relatives, it has had to suffer further translation into English but, for the student of a deeper truth, it offers a gateway of insight to a much more authentic and profound experience of Reiki practice for the beginner as well as masters of the Usui Reiki Ryoho and other lineages.

Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior
Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional research - interesting conclusions, 17 July 2010

OK, I came to this book primed to some degree about one of the central themes since I am a professional Kinesiologist myself. David Hawkins tells how he has 1000 audience members test each other with simple muscle monitoring techniques and unanimously come up with same answers. His work as a highly regarded medical psychiatrist and use of scientific method in replicable test results from such huge numbers of subjects puts a firm line of validity under what would otherwise be incredible assertions.

As a Kinesiology practitioner I get to see and experience some pretty extraordinary demonstrations of the power of human perception, self-healing and ability to transform external circumstances but communicating these results to the average person who has been trained by our culture to understand and except a very limited spectrum of "reality" is very challenging. Enter Power vs Force in which Hawkins goes way further than most of us and offers compelling proof from mass testing experiments that would show up any inconsistencies that might not come to light in years of one-to-one research.

What am I talking about? Consciousness can be quantified, everything we come in contact with from books to music to people and places can all be tested for whether they're good for us or bring us down. This is quite simple to do and, with a little practice, anyone can get trustworthy answers. It's all about the extraordinary power and awareness of the human sub-conscious, learn to use yours today. Read this book.
