4.0 out of 5 stars Jacquot is an absolute dude, 2 Sept. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The latest Jacquot novel sees the widowed Marseille-raised former rugby star turned cop living in the Caribbean with his two daughters.
A former girlfriend turns up asking for his help which sets in train a series of events that see the series transformed from basic procedural to part of the globe trotting thriller genre.
This is a beautifully paced, almost old-fashioned book which owes much to masters like Ian Fleming, John le Carré and Mad Freddie Forsythe.
The plot is really fast-paced without any clunky narrative accommodations that might make it unbelievable.
The baddies are sufficiently menacing, the good guys recognisable without being saints. The Caribbean settings, evoking the aforementioned le Carré's book (not the TV adaptation) 'The Night Manger' are the perfect backdrop for a rumination on good and evil.
A mass market, page turning delight. You have to love Daniel Jacquot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece from a master, 2 Sept. 2016

Varesi's Soneri is perhaps the greatest cop working in the modern detective universe. Tightly wound, obsessive, cerebral and difficult, he is a character of incredible depth who eschews the usual clichés of police procedurals.
This book again achieves a balance between the process of detective genre and being a meditation on Italian political history and corruption. Soneri, a veteran of left wing radicalism, becomes embroiled in a murder which touched on his own personal history.
The atmospheric fogs of winter in Parma shroud the narrative as civic corruption and the politics of globalisation and immigration frame an investigation that waken the ghosts of 60s/ 70s political tumult in Italy.
This is another spectacular triumph from Varesi and which is also beautifully translated by Prof. Joseph Farrell who manages to capture the lyricism of the original.
I could re-read Varesi's books to eternity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another atmospheric triumph, 2 Sept. 2016

The Dupin books evoke the Finistere region brilliantly and their immediate Concarneau/ Quimper environs even more so. Dupin is a brilliantly idiosyncratic creation and the support cast similarly well drawn. With roots in British-style sleuthing, Bannalec assembles a cast of characters in a small, claustrophobic space and unravels a tightly wound plot, slowly with great tension. The landscape and people of Cornouaille are the real stars with the author displaying, yet again, his deep love for this beautiful part of the world.

The Ricciardi novels are among the finest being produced anywhere in the world. Evocative and otherworldly, the leading two characters, a gifted odd couple, are compelling. This series cannot be recommended highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb plotting in the best book so far, 16 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Magson's Inspector Lucas Rocco series brilliant depictions of the France of the early 1960s. Rocco, an understated and classy detective, is an interesting moral counterpoint to the chicanery and devious plotting of the government and interior ministry. The mysterious Clos du Lac private sanatorium is the site of a murder that Rocco, despite being warned to steer clear of, cannot withstand the temptation to investigate. The series stands out from a lot of modern detective fiction because of labyrinthine plotting and believable, interesting characterization, and this is the best book of the bunch.

Lyrical, labyrinthine, clever and beautiful.
Villar's books are sensual and atmospheric, Caldas one of a handful of truly memorable literary detectives.
