4.0 out of 5 stars Great value and very bright but could, in certain conditions, benefit from a better solar panel and the ability to switch modes., 6 May 2016
I bought the four pack of these lights and, before mounting them, took one apart in order to allow me to measure the actual capacity of the battery, the charge rate from the solar panels, the energy usage of the light both in standby (dim) and full or bright light mode, etc. The aim of the testing was to allow me to determine the optimal locations to mount these solar powered lights based on energy consumption, charge rate, battery capacity, etc.

The single lithium ion 18650 battery is rated at 2200mah and I measured it as 2100mah, charging it via a metered lithium ion charger. The LED light itself consumes only 17ma in dim mode and around 300ma in bright mode so, assuming it is not constantly triggered by motion at night, a fully charged battery should be capable of powering the device for many days.

The solar panel, measured in bright, early May sunlight, at 14:00 provided 110ma to the charging circuitry so it would take around 20 hours at that rate to fully charge the battery. By 18:30 it was generating only around 60ma. When overcast these figures were much lower. In winter especially I believe that these lights will have to be very well located in order to continue to function as the weaker winter sun plus the much longer nights will eventually deplete the batteries. It is possible that a larger solar panel, or one made from the more efficient but more expensive, monocrystalline silicone rather than polycrystalline silicone, would deliver sufficient power during the winter. Another approach would be if the manufacturer could add a switch that allowed the dim mode to be disabled and perhaps reduce bright mode to say 150ma during late autumn and winter.

In bright mode the lights certainly emit around 300 lumens, measuring almost exactly the same light output on my Lux meter as my 300 lumen Led Lenser torch. However, the view angle of the light is much greater than the torch so it is nowhere near as bright at normal usage difference but still more than bright enough for its intended purpose.

The build quality of these lights is quite good for the price and they seem to be weatherproof, although here, on the coast of the West of Scotland, they will certainly be tested.

For the price, these lights are amazing value. Whether or not they will be able to maintain enough battery power to function continuously through the long nights and dull days of winter remains to be seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very bright, well made, torch, 26 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I own a number of LED torches but none come close to this one in terms of brightness. It is well made, runs cool, even when set to high, and is compact enough to slip into a pocket of my walking jacket and not really notice its presence.

When set to it's brightest (high) mode, It is over twice as bright as my LED Lenser P7, which is rated at 320 lumens. I power it with a single 18650 Lithium Ion battery, which I measured at 2400 mah using my inline power meter when charging and discharging it. Thorfire state that this torch draws 2.8 amps, when in high mode. However, I used an accurate ammeter and found that it draws 1.93 amps in high mode, 560 milliamps in mid mode, 80 milliamps in low mode and averages 800 milliamps when in strobe mode. This would mean that, in high mode, my battery will power this torch for around 1.25 hours, while in low mode it would run for around 30 hours, although this mode is quite dim and would be useful only say for reading a map or relaxing, reading a book in the tent.

In summary, although this torch does not emit the stated 900 lumens when used with a single, 3.7 volt, 18650 battery, it may approach the stated 900 lumens output when powered by 2 x CR123A, which would provide 6 volts. I do not have any CR123A batteries at the moment otherwie I would test them but, should an owner wish to use them to drive this torch, only high quality CR123A should be used as these are rated at a maximum, sustained, discharge current of 1500 milliamps. Cheaper cells may supply 2 x 3 volts but would not be able to supply sufficient current to drive this torch in high mode. However, even the most expensive, lithium, high capacity CR123A cells are only rated at around 1500 mah, I would still go with a high quality, rechargeable, lithium ion 18650 battery for this torch as it will last longer and still provide more than enough light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely jacket let down, a bit, by the TCZ 300 material., 26 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this jacket in large and it is a perfect fit for me at 6ft 5" with a 42" chest and 32" waist. The body is long compared to other, similar, TOG 24, hooded jackets and the arms are also very long, with thumb holes that are useful in colder weather. The jacket is also very well styled but it is let down a bit by the TCZ 300 material, which is quite thin and can be prone to pilling, especially when I use my rucksack. However, despite the thin material, it is very warm when used under a waterproof jacket and I feel that it is good value for money, at the price I paid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great machine with only one minor gripe, 17 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This CPR 1200 V202 was bought for my mother, who had been receiving a number of nuisance calls, despite having been signed up to the TPS for a number of years. It is very simple to install and blocking the current call is very easy for my mum in that she can simply push the large red Block Now button. My only minor gripe is that it does save a list of incoming calls, despite the photo on Amazon showing the right hand up and down arrow buttons with the labels Call List and Block List (see attached photo). The CPR 1200 in fact only allows access to previously blocked numbers so that they can be deleted from the block list and these buttons are not labelled allowing the user only to scroll up and down through the blocked number list then use the Delete button to remove the currently displayed number from the blocked list.

This means that if my mum receives a call and cannot make it to the CPR 1200 to press Block Now (she has mobility problems) I have 2 choices. I can either use the telephone handset to enter the code * * 2 # * 2 # to block the last incoming number or I go through the handset's incoming call list, write down the number I wish to block and then enter the code * * 7 # , wait for a beep, enter the number I wish to block then # and wait for a confirmation beep. If the CPR 1200 did store say the last 20 incoming calls in a list it would be easy to scroll through them and press block now. I should have read the user manual before purchasing but trusted the photo on Amazon.

Ths minor gripe aside the CPR 1200 functions very well and is easy enough for my mum to use, if she can make it to the machine to press block now as there is no way I could get her to enter the block current call code of # 2 .

5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed and very functional gilet, 28 April 2015
I have been running in this gilet during the past week and I am very impressed with the design and functionality. It is well fitted so there is very little air drag and the material used keeps out the wind chill but also breathes well so I never feel sticky while running in it, even though I have used it in temperatures up to about 20c. In addition, the 4 pockets, one chest, to side pockets and one at the rear, are very handy for carrying keys, a phone, etc. The only small issue that I initially had was the zip catching the inner neck storm flap when zipped fully up. However, simply taking more care when pulling up the zip seems to have eliminated the problem. It seems to be true to size. I am over 6 foot with a 42" chest size and large fits well with room for base and middle layers underneath.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great dongle, even for Windows 7 64-bit, as long as you use alternative drivers, 24 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great USB bluetooth dongle with one problem, albeit a problem that cost me no small amount of time to solve, which is why I have only given the dongle 3 stars.

I could not, initially, get it to work on Windows 7 64-bit. Both Microsoft's own bluetooth drivers plus the drivers included on the disk that ships with the dongle, installed correctly. However, the dongle could either not detect, or could not connect to, or, if able to connect, could not provide any services. I tried the dongle with 2 phones, a bluetooth headset, 2 bluetooth speakers and found problems with each.

After an hour of trying I uninstalled the drivers that came with the dongle and searched for alternative drivers for the CSR chipset used in this dongle and eventually found drivers that work very effectively on Windows 7 64-bit. They are from Toshiba and support Atheros, Broadcom, CSR and RFMD (Silicon Wave) bluetooth chipsets. The interface is very easy to navigate, they detect and connect swiftly and support all of the services that I have required so far however they have one downside in that they only offer up to bluetooth specification v3.0 + HS support. The bluetooth profile support is however extensive (see list below) so this should not deter anybody that requires to use the drivers, which, although supposedly only for Toshiba notebooks and Toshiba Bluetooth adapters, work fine on my desktop computers They are available from:

Price: £12.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly thermally conductive, long lasting and easy to work with, 31 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This thermal compound is extremely good quality, it has very high thermal conductance, almost as good as the MX-4 compound, and is a lot easier to work with than Arctic Silver 5 while being a lot cheaper than both of these alternatives. It is very tacky, has the advantage of not being electrically conductive, and seems to remain effective for a long time. I buy a lot of thermal compound and, for now, will be looking no further than Arctic MX-2

2.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable but not made out of leather thus lack durability and breathability, 31 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I already own 3 pairs of Caterpillar Restore boots and, from the photos, these boots look very much like the Restore. However, the Restore boot has leather uppers with a man made skirt around the upper, in order to prevent water ingress, and the boot itself is very durable and extremely comfortable, even after hours of walking. In contrast, upon receiving these boots, I found that the upper of the Collateral boot is entirely a man made, PU type, material, that does not feel durable or breathable at all. Some buyers have stated that the contrasting detailing on the upper (front skirt, mid tongue and heel) is real leather but I examined this under a powerful, illuminated, magnifying glass and it is also an artificial, man made material, like a good quality faux, suede, leather.

The man made upper looks and feels plasticky and will not age, like the nubuck leather that almost all other Caterpillar boots are made from. Although this boot feels comfortable, and is slightly lighter than the Restore boot, I am returning mine as I will never use these boots. I am heavy on my walking boots and these feel as though they would last me only a matter of a few weeks plus, even wearing them for only a few minutes in the house, with wool walking socks, my feet were very hot. I would hate to think how sweaty they would be after a few hours hard walking. My oldest Restore boots are now over 3 years old and still look and feel great.

I suppose the only plus to the artificial upper in this boot is that they will not require a waterproofer to prevent water ingress, however, when walking in anything but the coldest weather, I think these boots will cause your feet to sweat so much that the fact that they keep water out will be irrelevant.
