3.0 out of 5 stars A demon who also feels love, 10 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Painted Skin (DVD)
Set in China some time in the early Han dynasty, this tells of a warrior who rescues a woman who is actually a demon, a fox spirit who needs to eat human hearts to keep a human appearance. She is helped by another demon, a chameleon spirit.

But her feelings are complex: she actually is in love.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, 21 Sept. 2014
This review is from: White Tiger (DVD)
It started as if it might be a hybrid of war film and ghost story. But it gets increasingly incoherent and silly. There are two inconclusive encounters between the hero and the big enemy, and then it simply stops. We get long dull scenes of the German surrender and nothing is resolved.

Pretentious trash.

The Outline of History, Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind: Written, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)
The Outline of History, Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind: Written, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)
by H. G. Wells
Edition: Paperback
Price: £18.09

3.0 out of 5 stars The longer "History of the World", 14 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A much longer account than Wells's famous "Short History of the World", and written earlier. It is also much more detailed and is worth reading for someone serious about history. Just knowing what the standard progressive view was back then is worth knowing: you may be surprised by how much has changed.

Maybe best included as a reference work for a library or serious historian, with some nice ideas plus an illustration of an early 20th century view.

This is a facsimile edition, in two volumes. Not as good as a modern edition, but OK.

4.0 out of 5 stars What you have that a chimp lacks, 14 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This excellent book goes through various things that pre-humans developed after we split from the chimps and bonabos, our closest living relatives. Written well, as assumes no existing knowledge of biology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not historic but excellent, 10 Sept. 2014
This review is from: 47 Ronin (DVD)
This begins with the supernatural, adds a half-European hero and a very improbable romantic element. Compresses the time frame. Adds a rather striking witch who is convincingly evil.

So long as you were not expecting the actual story, this should be fine.

2.0 out of 5 stars How to make the Cuban revolution boring, 8 Sept. 2014
This review is from: The Lost City (DVD)
This manages the rare feat of making the Cuban revolution boring. And virtually ignores the bulk of the Cuban population

You'd also never guess that prostitution was legal in Batista's Cuba, or that Lansky and other mobsters already had several casinos operating, also quite legal.

No indication of the social inequalities that made people support the revolution.

Nothing is said about Batista having started out as a moderate radical who was supported by Cuba's small Communist party when he was elected President in 1940. Or why he later came back as a dictator.

A bunch of silly trivia, really

1.0 out of 5 stars Noah? No., 31 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Noah (DVD)
The bible story is quite grim. This for no clear reason is changed to make it a lot nastier. Someone really screwed up must have made those changes. Totally spoils a film that was OK in its first half.

4.0 out of 5 stars One small battle, 29 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Stalingrad (DVD)
This shows one small battle over a particular building in the much bigger war. You see things from both sides and see the human side of war. Very realistic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice drama, stupid conclusion, 17 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Cube (DVD)
I found this film gripping and fascinating. But I had also expected that there would be some sort of coherent explanation for the Cube at the end, and really there is not. Stylish but smart-arse.
