5.0 out of 5 stars Very important documentary, 9 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is by no means a very important documentary of these special relationships in the great composer's life and art.
I was a little wondering why there are no subitels in German, French and other common languages ...
They would have given to a wider audience the possibility to see and understand this DVD in a better way.
The same is to say about the other moving Bridcut-Film of Britten's last years and "Endgame".

5.0 out of 5 stars Singular document of splendid Belcanto Singing, 20 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Future buyers should mention, that this DVD is technically in a rather poor standard, with subtitles only in English (not be faded out). The Tito-Capobianco-Production of the NYCO is "good old" opera theatre with stone walls, keeping prisoned Roberto, becoming translucent when the spot light changes, to put only one example...
But forget all these odds and ends! This DVD is worth having and looking and listening.
Above all there is the great Beverly Sills as Queen Elizabeth I. She plays the elderly monarch extremly good (obviously having Bette Davis as her "teacher") - and she gives a very first class vocal portrait of this Donizetti Tudor Queen!
The other singers of the main parts (the only one already known to me being John Alexander) are doing a very good job. The conductor - Julius Rudel - is also good, so are (with some little reservation) chorus and orchestra (all the music in Mono sound). The whole event was made possible by TV-broadcast in the Mid-Seventies and so preserved to the posterity.
If you want to have a wonderful document of the art and voice of the "American Queen of Opera" in this fabulous role - buy this DVD without hesitation!

Scriabin: Complete Piano Sonatas

5.0 out of 5 stars Deepest grounds and highest tops!, 13 Mar. 2011
Scriabin's musical world is like his philosophy a compendium of human life in all it's shapes.
These are not only piano pieces or sonatas! Take the sonatas from the 5th on and you have a sheer cosmos of feelings, leading you from heaven to hell and vice versa ...
Roberto Szidon can put all this into hearable reality! I heard these recordings first when I was 14 years old, shortly after their publication in the early 70ies. Since then I never could stop admiring neither Scriabin's world of music nor the incomparable way Mr. Szidon plays it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highest Level, 5 Feb. 2011
Since I heard Anna Vinnitskaya playing Ravel's "Miroirs" in a Radio Broadcast I am an admirer of her art.
This is piano-playing at the highest level! Learn this by hearing the two Concertos by Prokoviev and Ravel on this disc. The way in which the music is performed is thrilling and convincing. The Deutsches-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and conductor Gilbert Vargas ar more than supporting the pianist, they are real partners in making these masterpeaces hearable. The recording technique is brilliant.
So I only can recommend this disc highly - it's worth to buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the first choice, but ..., 14 Nov. 2010
There are of course better recordings in the sense mentioned by the reviewers below.
Karajan, Böhm not to speak of the "original" sounding views of a Rene Jacobs, to put just one example.
But I find it quite nice to have this recording in my collection, because of the way a Price, a Troyanos, a Milnes, a Flagello are going a little bit outside of their common streets.
Shirley has sung much Mozart, but the others are like novices in this field. So they create a view that creates not an "all days" Mozart sound. Listen and then make your choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bach perfectly performed in Catholic outfit, 3 Jan. 2009
This production of the Christmas Oratorio is well situated in a Roman-Catholic baroque church. I like the "near crazy" looking Nikolaus Harnoncourt because he feels this wonderful music deep inside and brings all his fire and spiritual power to the singers, especially the choirboys who are singing like hypnotized by the conductor.
The coir- and solosinging is great and of a beauty that comes from the heart.
The orchestra playing with period instruments is virtuose and fits perfectly with the whole "Klangrede", that Harnoncourt is to realize for us all together with his so deeply engaged partners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most enchanting, 21 Dec. 2008
The wonderful mature boy voice from Jonathan Rendell (nearly 14 years old when recorded) is a great pleasure to hear. The programme is a mixture of solo pieces from Bach to Britten - tastefully choiced.
Hear this boy's angel like voice on the peak of it's development and a masterly representation of musical treasures!

5.0 out of 5 stars Britten in Venice, 8 Dec. 2008
I do not want to involve myself in the discussion whether this production resp. filming is to appreciate or to abandon - for me it is up today the only "Death" on DVD and because I love this opera so much I am grateful to have this disc.
Musically and visually I found myself impressed by some beauty of acting and the real perfection that Robert Tear brings to the character of Gustav von Aschenbach.
I also admire Alan Opie in most of the roles he gives - so I am not disappointed at all that he sings and acts the "collection" of important random persons so important for the way Aschenbach has to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply moving, 8 Dec. 2008
I saw this production in the early 1990ies at the Munich "Staatsoper" and was very impressed by the whole work - one of the real "classics" of 20th century musical drama.
This film of the original ENO version wonderfully preserves these feelings of a great human tragedy set into music by Britains - in my opinion - greatest composer of the passed century.
All the singers are near to perfection in both singing and acting. The orchestra plays with fire and extreme power but has also the colours of lyricism. And the little but very important part of the apprentice-boy is a unforgetting portrayal in this production.

It is so great that we can now have these wonderful meetings with the heroes of our childhood - Sandy, Bud and Flipper - on DVD in absolutely brilliant picture quality. I am so happy to have these precious films and I am full of joy foreseeing the next season being published soon ... Thanks MGM!
