4.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch overall, 22 Nov. 2015
Nice watch, bought during the black Friday event - and delivered within just a couple of days of purchase.

The minutes and hour markers have a polished rose gold finish with a luminous inlay and the centre section of the dial has a type of herringbone design which is faint at some angles and pronounced at others. And at some angles the polished hour markers are clearly visible, at others they blend into the black outer ring on the dial. The dial is nice and minimalist with just Sekonda at the top and the date window at the 6 o'clock position. The glass face has a slight dome to it, and when combined with the design of the watch face, it just made the overall appearance of the dial less clear than I had hoped - this is the main reason for me knocking off one star in this review. I would certainly advise you to see this watch in real life to make sure you are happy with the overall appearance.

The depth of the watch + dome is 10mm and it measures 40mm diameter across (excluding knob), with the glass area being about 34mm of this. The black strap is marked "leather upper" and appears to be slightly padded - it seems to be of decent quality. The movement is Japanese and the watch is assembled in China. Comes in a gift box and has a 2 year guarantee, although there is a £6 fee payable for postage if you need to use the repair service. I got it at a discounted price and it was a good deal, but at the regular price (or the RRP) there are perhaps nicer alternatives to consider.

Update: one person asked whether the watch is waterproof - the generic booklet supplied with the watch suggests that since the case is not marked with any water resistance information, it's a basic model which should not be exposed to heavy rain or worn while washing or allowed to come into contact with water.

4.0 out of 5 stars high function every-day-carry torch, 9 Mar. 2015
The Nitecore MH10 (MH=Multitask Hybrid) is a premium flashlight which use the Cree XM L2 U2 LED which is one of Cree's most efficient LEDs with a brightness of over 100 lumens/watt.

Compared to a regular torch this has a number of novel features. WHen you insert a battery, the LED built into the on/off switch flashes to tell you the integer and first decimal of the battery voltage, accurate to 0.1v. This LED also blinks to warn you when the battery is below 50% capacity or getting low. The body of the torch has a micro-USB connector and this connects to a charging circuit, allowing you to charge a battery inside the torch from any USB port. The torch can use 2x 3V CR123 primary cells or 1x 3.6v rechargeable Li-Ion cells (18650 size).

Four light intensities (1 lumen, 70 lumens, 240 lumens and 1000 lumens) can be selected and there are also SOS/beacon/strobe modes. Switching between brightnesses is achieved by holding the power button, and the flashing modes are accessed by pressing the button twice quickly. The beam range is claimed to be 232m which seems to be possible since the optics are designed to give a fairly narrow beam. With a 2600mAH battery, the run time is claimed to be 520 hrs on the 1 lumen setting and 6 hours on 240 lumens. The 1000 lumens setting can be used for 5 minutes at a time - after this the torch automatically switches to a lower intensity to protect from overheating. The torch remembers the current brightness setting and uses that the next time it is powered on. However, if the on button is held for more than a second, then the light goes straight to the 1 lumen setting. The torch is extremly bright on the 1000 lm setting - you can feel the warmth of the beam on the back of your hand and on your eyes even if your eyelids are shut tight! The beam colour is cool white.

The metal body is hard anodized black and made from aluminium alloy. Size = 1 inch x 5.1 inch. Waterpoof to IPX8. Supplied with a carrying holster, a lanyard and a 2300mAh battery. The torch has a warranty of 5 years from Sysmax. Note that the MH12 is a similar torch - but is slightly longer, has a tailcap button and is supplied with a 2600mAH battery.

I've given it 4 stars out of 5. Although it's the best torch I own, the switch is a little fiddly to use and in the dark it can be hard to distinuish it from the USB port cover. Also the rating of the supplied 2300mAH battery is a bit stingy - given the asking price, Nitecore should have included their 2600mAH cell since that's what was used to evalate the run times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good watch .... but silly RRP, 30 Nov. 2014
Purchased during the black Friday event for £20, this proved to be a decent enough watch. The lens is made of glass (many similar watches have acrylic faces which scratch easily) and the face is recessed into the body by about one millimetrer, so it's less likely to get scratched or damaged.

The main time digits (hour/min) are almost 10mm high and the seconds are 5mm high. Above the time is an area displaying day of week, and date/month. The latter can be configured to be DD-MM or MM-DD format. There is also an hourly chime feature which I find particularly useful as a project manager who often has meetings on the hour. You can set up a 2nd time and there is also an alarm/stopwatch feature. I was able to set up the correct time without having to refer to the manual so the four main buttons are fairly self explanatory.

The LCD is pretty clear when viewed straight on, or at angles of upto 20 degrees and is still fine at about 50 degrees. At more extreme angles you'll have trouble seeing which segments are on/off. If activated, the indiglo backlight shines through the black segments, giving a blue on white effect.

The body is of course fairly chunky but quite light. There is a mini compass (about 10mm across) fitted to the strap, this can be slid off if not required. The strap seems quite good but we'll have to see how long it lasts. Some of my Casio resin straps seemed to fall apart after a couple of years.

The reason my review is 4 stars and not 5 is that the RRP of £60 is way out of order. In the US, amazon sell this same watch for about £15!

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality and sturdy pencil, 28 Nov. 2014
I purchased this during the Black Friday event. The RO800+ is a revamped version of the original Rotring 800 pencil, which if made in Germany is something of a collector's item. Originally, Rotring pencils were all made in Germany but for the last few years, production of their top-end pencils is in Japan.

What Rotring have done here is to replace the gold dome on the end of the original 800 pencil with a rubberized dome in the RO800+. So now, once you have retracted the metal tip, you can use the RO800+ as a stylus.

The writing tip is retracted by twisting the knurled piece at the back of the pencil and once retracted the tip sits a couple of mm inside the dome area. The ability to retract the tip makes the pencil pocket-safe (compared to the Rotring 600, which has a fixed lead pipe). The pencil can hold half a dozen standard leads which are loaded by removing the metal button at the back of the pencil. Leads are advanced by pressing the same button.

Overall the pencil body has a sturdy and solid feel. The tip of retractable pencils can sometimes be prone to wobble, but this wasn't noticeable in the pencil I received. One thing you do have to watch out for is to not drop the pencil onto a hard floor because given the weight of the solid metal body, the tip is likely to become damaged.

The pencil was supplied in a cardboard sleeve which had been squashed a little by overzealous packing. Note that the pencil is available in either silver and black finishes, and in 0.5mm and 0.7mm lead sizes. There is also a 2mm leadholder which uses a different mechanism. The current price of £58 is steep, but if you shop around you should find it for £40 or less. And if you don't need the stylus feature, consider Rotring 800 0.5mm Silver Barrel Mechanical Pencil Gift Box

3.0 out of 5 stars limited edition screwdriver RRP £299.99, 26 Nov. 2014
So this limited edition screwdriver has a RRP of £299.99 and the same screwdriver without the Swarovski crystals can be bought for £19.99.

For the money, I had really expected that the screwdriver bits with this set were crystal encrusted as well ... but they aren't. For those of you looking to save some money, my advice is to get the standard screwdriver and get one of the kids to glue on some Swarovski crystals for you. Yes, DIY is the way to go here ....

Not much to add to the product description. It's a large tub of plastic cookie cutters, which are colour-coded to help you identify the different groups. Includes multiple sizes for some of the commoner shapes such as hearts or stars or circles or gingerbread men. I've uploaded a gif showing the available shapes. Although you'll probably only use a fraction of the set, it's pretty good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seems to be effective, 2 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this after hearing birds scratching around in my roof (loft) - they had entered through a small hole.

The unit has various operating modes and offers both audible and ultrasonic deterrents. Controls allow you to vary the ultrasonic frequency sweep (some experimentation required for different birds or for other pests) and also the volume of the audible deterrent. That audible sound is like the screech of a bird of prey. You can also choose continuous operation or motion activated. The unit also comes with a remote control (like a car key fob), which means you can turn it on and off without needing to approach the unit. It comes with a mains power supply and a long extension lead and can also be operated off "C" sized batteries.

On high volume settings the audible noise is quite loud and I was concerned whether it would disturb my neighbours. Therefore I only used the unit for a couple of hours in the daytimes. Anyway after about a week of use, the birds have decided my loft is too hostile for them. I am pretty sure the unit helped in that regard, The reason for knocking a star off the rating is that it does not support being connected up to an electronic timer. I wanted to have the unit come on for 10 minutes every hour during the daytime while I was at work - but that didn't work out - you need to supply power AND press a key on the remote to activate the unit. It would have been nice if there wasn't that dependency on the remote.

1.0 out of 5 stars seemed to be ineffective, 2 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this unit in an attempt to deter magpies who I could hear in my loft (they had entered through a small hole). Anyway the main unit comes with a mains power supply and a long extension lead. The unit is quite compact and seems well built. I placed the unit on the floor in my loft and hooked it up to the mains. The unit has 2 settings (emit sound at 2 minutes or 5 minutes) and I used the 2 minute setting. It emits a short burst of ultrasonic noise at the chosen interval and during testing before installion, my ears could just about hear the unit emitting burst of noise.

Anyway in actual use (I left it switched on for over a week) the unit seemed to make no difference, the birds did not seem to change their behaviour in any way. I think the emitted burst is very short (just a second or two every couple of minutes) and perhaps it's at a frequency which birds can't hear (I did some subsequent research and there seem to be a number of articles on the web suggesting birds can't hear ultrasonic sounds). Anyway I'll keep the unit in case it comes in useful against cats in the garden or perhaps rats - but it certainly didn't live up to the name "bird repeller".

New launch ThruNite Tis CREE XP-E LED AAA Flashlight Mini EDC Torch 60Lumens(red)
New launch ThruNite Tis CREE XP-E LED AAA Flashlight Mini EDC Torch 60Lumens(red)

5.0 out of 5 stars superb torch, 10 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Tis features a tough aluminium body with deep knurling. It runs off an AAA alkaline battery (and also works fine off a rechargeable AAA). Although the barrel colour is described as "red", it is pink, just like the stock picture. The light is far brighter than the Maglite solitaire and the LED bulb is rated for 50,000 hours so should never need replacing. Being small and relatively light, if you drop this torch it is unlikely to get damaged.

The on/off action is achieved by rotating the head slightly. This model is available in other body colours too (black, blue, green). The 60 lumens may not sound bright compared to the 1000+ lumen models you'll see advertised elsewhere but it's a true figure and plenty bright enough for indoor use.

ThruNite make other AAA-battery models (e.g. Ti2) which are slightly brighter and feature more modes, but this single mode light is small and compact, and ideal to carry around in a coat pocket or a purse. It is unbeatable value at the current price of £5.95 delivered. If you want something for the car, then their "AA" battery models such as the Saber or T10 cost more but are even brighter and feature longer run times.
