Handing Out Apples in Eden
Handing Out Apples in Eden
by Malisa Garlieb
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!, 22 Jan. 2016
This is an extraordinary collection from one who is bound to become a major voice in English poetry, not only in the US but in the entire English speaking world. She speaks not only for the feminine, but for all the facets of human experience in the realm of relationship, and through her very vulnerability (so feelingly expressed) overcomes the forces that might seek to undermine her spirit. This book is a triumph! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Manifesto for the Human Spirit, 27 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Sparkle, Assassin (Paperback)
This book made me guffaw, cheer aloud and, crucially, to think. What is the meaning of our time? Who can really identify what we as a species is up against right now, urgently? Our artists? Our poets? Alan Jackson approaches the work of, among others, Ted Hughes, and finds that the words on the page mean exactly what they say, but that we don't understand what speaks those words, and can't as long as we blindly accept a materialist, secular, atheist view of the world and what is active in it.
This book is a two-fisted attack on the enemies of freedom and the human spirit. Yes, Alan Jackson quotes himself a great deal in the book, as well as those from whom he strips the veils, but it is to show that he knows what he is talking about. He has made the journey, and has come back to tell us the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Lachman read, 18 Nov. 2013

I've become a fan of Gary Lachman's work since his history of consciousness. He is fair and clear, with a respectful detachment that I deeply appreciate.

Atlantis and the Cycles of Time: Prophecies, Traditions, and Occult Revelations
Atlantis and the Cycles of Time: Prophecies, Traditions, and Occult Revelations
by Joscelyn Godwin
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Well written but..., 18 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Godwin is a wonderful writer, but in this book he allows himself a bit too much cynical detachment for it to be an entirely comfortable read, though he covers the topic with admirable thoroughness. Recommended, but be prepared for a certain hauteur.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love It!, 18 Nov. 2013

Having read the first Black Water collection, I was delighted to discover a few years ago that a second volume existed. Hard to find though. Good old Amazon. I found it and now have another great bunch of weird and wonderful tales for the long winter nights. Fabulous!

Stories Hollywood Never Tells
Stories Hollywood Never Tells
by Howard Zinn
Edition: Audio CD
Price: £8.51

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!, 18 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a good introduction to Howard Zinn's work, but the best thing I've ever come across of his is his book A People's History of America. That is a great rallying cry to the unenfranchised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the Job!, 18 Nov. 2013

This is a great garment! Weather-proof and insulating, so as to keep the warmth in. Smart, too, not too gothic looking, though black leather. Not as heavy as I might have feared. A success!

5.0 out of 5 stars Literary Criticism At Its Best, 9 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a first rate piece of criticism of one of the most difficult poets to write about. Northrop Frye always has something interesting to say, even when you disagree with him. All his books are worth the reading!
