The Winning Parent: A Parent's Guide for the Journey of Competitive Sport
The Winning Parent: A Parent's Guide for the Journey of Competitive Sport
by Daniel Massaro
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For 'Sporty' Kids, 8 Mar. 2016
I want to start this review by saying that while I have a son who is currently 7 years old, he doesn't currently participate in competitive sport. But if you've seen this book and thought that it might not be relevant to your child if they're not 'sporty' then think again!

The clear theme throughout this book is the focus on the development of the person before the performer, and as such that obviously relates to any aspect of raising your children. There are so many pieces of information that you can use to just help your child develop in general, and support them in anything that they show an interest in.

I'd also recommend this to coaches of children (as I have done to the coaches at our club); not least at the grassroots level, when a lot of the coaches are parents themselves.

In short, Stage 3 - 'Fuel Up', is about educating yourself. So if you're a parent or coach that truly cares about the development of those children in your care - and want to be of help rather than a hindrance, then the small price for this book will pay for itself many times over through the fulfilling experiences that applying this process will deliver.

I'm looking forward to using the information to improve myself as a father, as a coach, and as a person!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pep - Yet another way of winning, and another, and another ..... !, 30 Dec. 2014
Absolutely fantastic book! A fascinating and detailed insight into the inner workings and organisation of one of the worlds top sports teams/organisations; and also the inner workings of the non-stop mind of one of the greatest coaches in current sport.

If you've read Pep: Another Way of Winning, you'll know what i mean about Guardiola's mind, and his 24/7 analysis. It makes you wonder how the guy manages to sleep! This book further shows his constant pursuit of leaving as little to 'chance' as possible.

If you love football, and particularly if you love coaching, then you MUST buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Gripping, 8 Mar. 2014
After the movie that had a number of comic moments, the TV follow-up's are much darker, and make for gripping viewing. There are some parts that make difficult viewing, but that all adds to the quality and realism.

Vicky McClure puts in some powerful performances. Quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meticulous and Moving, 4 Jan. 2008
As the title to this review suggests, the research behind this biography is mightily impressive. A great way to get the measure of the man, by taking accounts from various people from Ali's massive (understatement) entourage on events big and small through his life and boxing career.

If you view Ali with wonderment then this book will not only reinforce that view, it will leave you feeling as though you actually know the man yourself. You'll laugh and smile at the much publicised poems and fight predictions that were his trademark, but you also find that this great sporting and social hero was at times ruthlessly exploited, with his so called friends taking liberties with his generosity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tune That Represents A Genre, 10 Dec. 2007
I bought this back in 1999. Radio 1's Judge Jules had mixed it into Hybrid's Finished Symphony on his show to create 10 minutes of pure bliss.

Its only when you hear the full length version that the true class of the track fully emerges. Its one of those goose bump tracks. Sweeping, epic, tranquil, and a build up that the legend that is Sasha is king of.

I came across the EP when sifting through my cd's the other day, and nearly shot myself for letting it sit for years with the mere mortals of my cd collection. It's now on the i-pod, and sitting proudly in the pile of my 'most played' once more.

The best trance tune ever, and a timeless classic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should there be a CD 2 .....?, 6 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Fabric 36 (Audio CD)
Villalobos is reknowned for his slow-burning, long-building mixes; and from what i've heard they go down a storm in clubs when he does his 2-3 hour sets. Herein lies the problem ..... the cd comes to a close at a point where in a regular set he would presumably start to 'step it up'. This is backed up by the latino track at the end of the mix that shows a noticable move up a gear.

I've no trouble in believing this is what Villalobos is about to an extent, but surely a mix like this would be more suited to a 2 disc release, where there's room to follow up this slow builder with a second disc that would represent the last-hour peak of a set?

I'd say buy Magda - She's a Dancing Machine for some minimal to move to, or buy Cocoon's Green & Blue album for some Villalobos with a bit more to it if you're after a release that you'll really be impressed with.

If, like me, you're a Fabric First member however, then just keep giving it a whirl and see if it grows on you. You'll be getting a new cd in a month anyway!

5.0 out of 5 stars Legendary Athlete, Legendary Man, 29 Nov. 2006
A very thought-provoking book from a man who is much more than a great boxing champion.

Behind all the bravado and loud talking, all the power and grace in the ring, is a mind and a belief that is truly refreshing.

I found this book to be enlightening, and i will certainly be reading it again, and again, and probably again!
