The Dean's December (Penguin Classics)
The Dean's December (Penguin Classics)

4.0 out of 5 stars For those lovers of Saul Bellow, 24 July 2000
Although Dean's December cannot compete with Bellow's masterpiece, Herzog, it will be appreciated by his fans nonetheless. Bellow's work is simply mezmerizing in its descriptions, despite a the characters tendency to lose himself in philosphical thought. What the fan will learn from this book is that excessive flight into philosophy can blind the deep thinker from the truths of reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars The journey that lies ahead for Muslims has been laid out., 13 July 2000
Fazlur Rahman, one of the most reknowned Muslim scholars of the twentieth century, has had an impact on Muslim thought that will not be easily forgotten. His dedication to finding viable solutions and to create a pragmatic and Quran based interpretation of where Muslims stand and where they should be heading, is undeniable.
This book examines the historical degradation of Islamic knowledge and its failures to meet the challenges of modern science and scientific method. He examines the failures of previous measures to reform Islamic education and in-turn Islamic thought itself, but also looks to the future and lays out carefully what needs to be done to create a sustainable body of modern Islamic scholarship. This book is critical yet still retains a theme of hope and support to the struggles that Muslims shall face. It is definitely worth a read, and may one day inspire the next generation of Muslim reformers.

American Psycho (Film Tie-In)
American Psycho (Film Tie-In)
by Bret Easton Ellis
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars What a psyco., 13 July 2000
Reading Ellisons book is a journey into the mind of not only a serial killer but into our very own minds and darkest impulses. This is a book about a society that is so obsessed with appearances and status that all individual identity is lost in the competition where only slight deviations, such as the beautiful card seen, can differentiate one from the pack. Ellison fools the reader by taking him through the logic of this impecible killer. By the time you reach a point of violence you are suprised by how closely you agreed with his logic that it makes you fear for your own sanity. The book is beautifully written, unnervingly gruesome, and forces the reader to re-examine his own life and what he along with everyone else is capable of.
