Open, 10 July 2004
Several years in the making, the All Saints ringleader's debut solo album boasts a galaxy of well-chosen collaborators including Primal Scream, Biz Markie, Basement Jaxx and Playgroup's Trevor Jackson.
And yet Open sidesteps focuslessness because, wherever the music takes us, whether it's the brassy, Ike 'n' Tina-referencing 'Nasty Boy' or the divine debut single 'Never Felt Like This Before', there's a charm and warmth which always leads back to Lewis and her charismatic vocal style. There are still some hints of All Saints, but this is not a bad thing, after all, they were very successful. It's clear that Shaznay sounds invigorated, relaxed and, above all, happy. It's not hard to hear why.
