Hillary And Jacky
Hillary And Jacky

1.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful film ruined by the worst possible DVD quality, 3 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hillary And Jacky (DVD)
I want to stress the fact that this review is not about the film itself which is fabulous. I saw it at the cinema, had a Pal VHS version.
Recently I decided to buy the DVD. The image transfer quality is poor, it is indeed in English but the soundtrack is inaudible throughout, the description did mention it was an import from Holland and listed the language in the subtitles category. What it did fail to mention was that there was no way to turn the subtitles off, and they take a good fourth of the screen.
I was so disappointed at first then became rather furious at a sale which I personally find fraudulent.
This has never happened to me on Amazon. They guarantee their third party sellers, that's good, but that would imply a monitoring that is simply not possible considering how many articles are sold. The seller on the other hand should have described these problems rather than listing it as 'good as new'. I have never left a bad seller review before and will contact them before posting feedback according to what happens.
But no matter what, this is the only DVD avalaible, so my advice to you is 'don't touch it'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Like watching paint dry..., 18 April 2016

Oil paint that is. The characters are flat, lack charisma, it is impossible to sympathise with any of them. The storyline is mediocre at best. I'm glad I bought it cheaply in the used section of Amazon.
In spite of the nearly general public acclaim, I would advise anyone not to bother...

4.0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunities, 12 Jan. 2016

Not as together as the previous series but I still enjoyed it. The cast is great. I just wonder why a crucial scene is missing: the team getting together and sharing the visions, harassment, etc happening to them all. This would have tied things up and might have made a little more sense. Not to spoil a scene for viewers who haven't seen it yet, I won't give the names of the characters away, but another big mistake in my view (and another missed opportunity to tie the story up together) is the reason given for the attempted suicide. The character's own harassment should have been the reason for it. Fine, he's scared and under pressure but he is hardly the kind of man who would off himself over a relationship.
Still, I am hoping that all the comments will bring us a fifth season that veers back to the earliest three.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just don't!, 19 Sept. 2015

This review is from: Borges : A Life (Hardcover)
I would have to write for hours if I were to describe what is wrong with this book. It seems like Williamson couldn't quite choose between writing a biography and deducing a biography while writing critical reviews of Borges's work. No creation, not even a biography which seeks to be completely objective can attain this goal. Total objectivity is not possible in any art form. Williamson attempts to mask his arrogant and utterly subjective statements with sentences such as 'having read this [add his own previously stated opinion on a particular point] and add [another utterly personal interpretation of a text by Borges], it is impossible to come to any other conclusion than [another often embarrassingly ludicrous subjective statement]. I am paraphrasing, but not exaggerating. A few straight forward facts such as dates are given here and there, especially at the beginning and the end of the book, and quotes from Borges -though often taken out of context and used for the biographer's own purpose, but on the whole this is a book about how highly Williamson thinks of himself and his opinions. Had the option been available, I would have given this book no stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars As brilliant as any of Kafka's fiction., 19 Sept. 2015

Kafka's letters, not only those to Felice Bauer, not only enlighten the reader as to Kafka's personality, but also read very much like his fiction. Anyone who loves Kafka will not regret this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read but..., 9 May 2014

A book that promises to free "yourself from chronic depression" through behavioural techniques and meditation, should it work, would be a Nobel Prize winner in several categories.
This book can definitively help you deal with depression, but eradicate it? I find that part insulting to all chronic depression sufferers.

And one of the most boring films I have ever watched. What a waste of incredible talent! The performances are superb, the film is soporific.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book., 9 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
MyFanwy Hart's 'The Embellisher: Let's Get Started' is a must for anyone who wants to learn how to use an embellisher and particularly all that this wonderful machine can do. It is lavishly illustrated, it covers several techniques, not just what the embellisher does but how to be creative with it and take your creations further. There is even a chapter covering dyeing techniques.
I find some of the previous reviews baffling. You will not regret this introduction to the magic of the Embellisher.
Myfanwy Hart has also published two DVDs on the subject, 'Inspired Embellishing Level 1' and its sequel 'Level 2'.
Find out for yourself. What may not suit one person can be another's treasure trove.
